Manifest Destiny

•A belief shared by many Americans in the mid 1800s that the United States should expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean.

•It was our manifest destiny, or “obvious fate” to settle land all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to spread democracy.

Texas Claims Independence

1. Texas claims independence •White settlers in Texas secede from Mexico and claim independence for the “Republic of Texas” in 1835

•Mexico gets upset and invades the “Republic of Texas”

•The war ends after the Texas Army captures the main general, Santa Anna, for the Mexican army and trades his life for a peace treaty and Texas

2. Mexican-American War (1846-48)

•Due to the belief in “Manifest Destiny,” the USA decides to push further west to try to annex Mexican territory

•It is disputed which side, Mexican or American, was at fault for starting the war

•War results in Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in which Mexico gives massive amounts of land to the US, including New Mexico and California
