2 Wicks Cattle 2014 Production Sale Catalog
Welcome...Another year has come and gone. On May 14th and 15th, when we were AIing cows, it was 85 de-grees and wind blowing 40mph with dust blowing everywhere. The grass was turning browner by the hour. I was thinking to myself, what are we doing putting all this money and time into these cows? Then on May 17th, the rain came and stayed. It was amazing to see the country turn into beautiful green grasslands. It was so wet that we couldn’t get pairs out to summer pasture for a month…. Which is a great problem to have.
The cattle industry is a very good occupation to be in, with cattle numbers low and feed costs starting to level out, I will say that the commercial cow-calf family is in the driver’s seat. This fall, we saw prices for breds, opens, and feeders at an all-time high. To have a cost effective herd, you must have females that are easy keepers, raise big calves, and breed back year after year – and that is where the SimAngus female shines.
We have a super stout set of bulls. They haven’t been pushed; just fed appropriate rations and their genetics have

shined through and they have matured into great bulls. Our foundation in the cow family are registered Angus and registered SimAngus cows. They are daughters of Bushwacker, 1407, VRD, Preferred Beef, Net Merit , Conneally Lead-On and Final Answer, just to name a few. We selected herd sires that would complement these lines to produce bulls that will make your feeder steers bring top dollar and your replacement heifers be great mamma cows.
Feel free to stop in anytime and preview the bulls, there is something in this set of bulls that is pretty special. Please come take a look and see for yourselves.
Wicks Cattle cordially invites you to our annual production sale on February 4, 2014. Come enjoy a great meal, sit down in our heated sale facility and enjoy the new technology of our video sale. Feel free to give us a call anytime or stop in, the coffee is always on.

COURAGEThat’s what took place with my brother Dan on July 24, 2013. After battling Lou Gehrigs disease for a little over three years, Dan opened up the gate and rode to heaven. Dan was always a highly respected individual, but the bravery and courage he showed while fighting the disease was unreal, and even in illness he gain more respect from everyone that knew him.
He was a man of many talents; he could mechanic, carpenter, drive truck with the best of them, ranch and cowboy. Whenever a neighbor or friend needed something, Dan was always the first one there.
Dan was a great big brother, and for Andy, a loyal little brother. He was a superb father as he truly tried to make it to all of his family functions and events, all the way to the bitter end, where he couldn’t go anymore. Dan was dedicated to everything he did, and was loyal and sincere to everyone he knew.
Dan leaves behind his wife Amy; 2 daughters, Emily (Thane Escott) and Abigail Wicks; and son, Chris (Kellie) Herman; two grandchildren, Conor and Teighlor; and two brothers, Andy and myself.
Dan is up there right now in heaven, cowboying, ranching, and enjoying stories and laughs with Mom and Dad.
Dan, thanks for being a great big brother and ride hard. We’ll see you in the big pasture someday.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in.Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
• All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.• Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. • Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth
Quick Guide to ASA EPDs and IndexesExpected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their prog-eny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and - 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to deter-mine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:
• All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)• Back Fat (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.• Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.• Calving Ease (CE): Percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers.• Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.• Docility (DOC): Percentage of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).• Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.• Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
• Marbling (MRB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days. • Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.• Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days. Stayability (STAY): Percentage of daughters remaining in the cowherd at six years of age.• Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)• Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a rib-eye steak.• Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. • Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. • Yield Grade (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.= $6,000). A percentileranking chart is required to de-termine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.• Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.

Purebred Angus. We chose Effective for our AI sire on our first calf heifers. The calves came small and grew well. They are super sound and very correct made. The calves have a very good disposition and are quiet. The heifer calves sired by Effective look really good, they are super feminine and most have that magical cross of 1/4 3/4 AN.

After last years first calf crop from Singletary, we discovered something, they were flat good and everyone liked them. The day after the sale last year, I made a phone call to Cow Camp in Kansas and next thing you know Singletary is standing at Wicks Cattle, co-owners with Genex.
All his calves are really thick, wide, deep and super sound. They are Angus headed and are all really good dispositioned. Singletary himself is big numbered, and his calves’ numbers and profile really look good from day one. The females are about to calve and do they look broody. I hate to ride a good horse in the ground, but Single-tary will be used hard here in our AI program and clean-up.

We are very pleased with the outcome of his progeny. Time Out cleaned up and we AI’d several cows to him this year. SJ Ranch, Shannon and Jennifer GoetzFirst off I would like to thank Zane and Mary Jo for working hard to find blood lines that will work for ranchers. We have been buying bulls for years from Wicks Cattle and are very pleased with their disposition and ability to put pound’s on the calves. Wicks Cattle bulls are easy to handle no matter what their age we can walk up and scratch their backs in the pasture. We intend to continue using Wicks Cattle bulls in our operation for years to come. You will be very pleased with their demeanor.
- Shannon & Jennifer Goetz, Richardton, N.D.
Cammack Land & Cattle, Gary & Amy Cammack & SonsThe decision to purchase bulls from Wicks Cattle has been an easy one. Wicks cattle provide high quality composite bulls that are responsible for an additional 50 lbs. at weaning time and buying from a young ranch family has been a win-win for our ranch family.
• - Gary & Amy Cammack, Union Center, S.D.
Beaver Creek Ranch, Mark, Philip & Scotty MesserWe’ve been buying bulls from Wicks family for years and have been very satisfied with their performance. The most important aspect in our beef industry today is fertility in your bulls, whether it is AI or natural breeding. I believe that the cow/calf producer must breed for performance and not feed for performance. We have been very satisfied with the bulls maintaining their weight and health in this harsh North Dakota weather.
The females that we have kept back from Wicks bulls have been a great addition to our cow herd. I believe the most important thing about the future of the beef industry is starting at conception, calving ease, carcass data and the cows. Wicks cattle is doing a great job of that.
