Todays MissionAdding and subtracting with unlike

denominators

How do we add when we don’t have common denominators?!?

1 32 4

Make EQUIVALENT Fractions!!!

Fractions that represent the same value are equivalent.

Remember!

To add or subtract unlike fractions, first rewrite them

as equivalent fractions with a common denominator.

• You can use any common denominator. But it will be easier to find the least common denominator to add and subtract unlike fractions.

• The least common denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators.

How do we do this?

1 32 4

Practicing Equivalent Fractions

Make equivalent Fractions by finding the LCD

1. ½ and 1/8

2. 1/3 and 7/9

3. 5/10 and 9/12

4. 6/7 and ¾

Practicing Equivalent Fractions

Make equivalent Fractions by finding the LCD

1. ½ and 1/8

2. 1/3 and 7/9

3. 5/10 and 9/12

4. 6/7 and ¾

Time to + and -!!! Steps for unlike denominators

1. Find the LCD for the two denominators by looking for LCM

2. Make equivalent fractions by multiplying both the numerator and denominator by the same number (to get LCD)

3. Add the numerators, leave your denominator

4. If needed, simplify
