WHAT IS LITERACY?An effective literacy skill set includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. These skills are fundamental in helping you communicate successfully in all subjects and are also used every day in order to communicate with, and make sense of, the world around you. Effective literacy will give you the power to be confident and assertive. The heart of improving your literacy skills is to practise them in all lessons.

Writing-SPaGWriting skills are vital to exam success in all subject. The priorities are:

Word Groups - noun (common, proper andabstract), pronoun, adjective, verb and adverb.

Punctuation- capital letter, full stop, comma, apostrophe, inverted commas, question and exclamation mark, hyphens and dash, brackets, colon, semi colon and ellipsis.

Sentence Structure - simple, compound and complex sentences, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and the purpose of sentences (statement, question, command and exclamation)

SPaG FocusIn your lessons, you will peer-assess and self-assess with a focus on the accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

This will help you to ensure that your literacy is accurate and effective in all lessons.

Celebrating LiteracyYoung Writers ‘Stranger Sagas’ competition for Y8. 92 stories have been chosen for publication in the Stranger Sagas-Birmingham Adventures.

World Book Day 2018Fayre for all year groups- 58 books sold in 2017 and 142 this year!
