including Solomon, Agur, Lemuel, and “the Wise” (22:17-31:31)

“Name that proverb…er!”

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.”

“He that speaks ill of the mare, will buy her.”

“Love your neighbour; yet don't pull down your hedge.”

§What a tangled web we weave when…

§Look before…

§Don’t count your chickens…§Don’t cry over…§Haste makes…§ If you can’t stand the heat…§Make hay while…§The pen is mightier…§The way to a man’s heart is through…

1. The Bible didn’t invent wisdom. It was all over the ancient world and is all over the modern world.

2. The worldview of Proverbs only has room for two types of people…

1. What sets biblical wisdom apart from all the other wisdom of the world?

2. How do you tell the difference between a wise person and a fool?

§It is not merely “skill in living”…

§It is not just about making good decisions.

§“Lord” is used 87x in Proverbs.

§Horror?

§Respect?

§“The fear of the Lord” 20x

§“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” 3:7

§“The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.” 10:27

§“He whose walk is upright fears the Lord, but he whose ways are devious despises him.” 14:2

§The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.” 14:27

§“Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.” 15:16

§“Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.” 23:17

Why fear? The fear referred to here is not the type that makes one run away. It is more like reverence or awe. It is the awareness that God, not oneself, is the center of the universe. It is the emotion that cultivates the humility that allows a person to listen to advice and avoid the pride that causes people to reject criticism. (T. Longman)

§“first,” “foundation,” “Source”

§“How can someone be considered wise if they do not understand the most basic and important thing about the universe?” (T. Longman)

§ It is the indispensable first step in the instruction manual for life!

The fear of the Lord is… the beginning of wisdom not only in the sense that it is the first step in a wise way to live, but also in the sense that all the later characteristics of wisdom flow from the fear of the Lord like a river flows from a spring. – John Piper

§Proverbs: Wisdom __________ works!

§Ecclesiastes: Wisdom __________ works… I guess.

§Job: Wisdom __________ works!

§“Biblical wisdom places its trust not merely in the order observable in Yahweh’s world, but rather in Yahweh himself, who ordered the world.” (B. Waltke)

§Humility (avoidance of pride) = 18x

§Proverbs 3:5-6

§Matthew 7:24-27§James 3:13-18§***I Corinthians 1:18-2:5***

“Wisdom is the ability to make godly choices in life.”

“The sense of insight which brings order to every aspect of life because one understands the proper place of God.”
