1. The Bible didn’t invent wisdom. It was all over the ancient world and is all over the modern world.
2. The worldview of Proverbs only has room for two types of people…
1. What sets biblical wisdom apart from all the other wisdom of the world?
2. How do you tell the difference between a wise person and a fool?
§It is not merely “skill in living”…
§It is not just about making good decisions.
§“Lord” is used 87x in Proverbs.
§Horror?

§“The fear of the Lord” 20x
§“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” 3:7
§“The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.” 10:27

Why fear? The fear referred to here is not the type that makes one run away. It is more like reverence or awe. It is the awareness that God, not oneself, is the center of the universe. It is the emotion that cultivates the humility that allows a person to listen to advice and avoid the pride that causes people to reject criticism. (T. Longman)
