2. President’s Report
Ellen Shackles
The year 2012/2013 was an exciting year for Ultimate in WA. There were 10 WA tournaments held in 2012. Hosting the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships (AMUC) was an obvious highlight of 2012, as well as the high number of WA representatives taking part at national and international tournaments. Our state women’s team, Kaos, finished fourth at the Australian Ultimate Championships (AUC) which is the best performance by a WA women’s team so far. 2012 saw the election of new executive and general committee members, WA membership numbers reaching 683 players and Ultimate becoming more popular in regional areas of WA, with Esperance, Karratha and Broome beginning to have regular games. Leagues were run at UWA Sports Park, Riverton, Yokine and Bunbury. The relationship between WAFDA and the Department of Sport and Recreation continued to thrive as a result of the efforts of our Development Officer (Anna Haynes) and the Executive committee. Perth hosted the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships (AMUC) attracting 20 teams from around Australia and New Zealand. Massive congratulations to WA team, Cabs Are Here on winning AMUC who were the first WA team to win a mixed nationals tournament. A huge amount of effort went into planning for AMUC and the event was a great success! There was a lot of positive feedback from supporters, players and AFDA. Thank you to all involved with the organising and running of AMUC this year, especially Tournament Director, Anna Haynes with assistance from the AFDA Director of Events, John Hempel A special mention must also be made for two groups of players who competed at an international level in 2012 ‐ those selected to represent their country at the World Ultimate & Guts Championships (WUGC) and those selected for the World Ultimate Junior Championships held in Ireland. We have 7 WA members across senior representative teams and 9 members across the junior representative teams in 2012.
In July 2013 Toronto, Canada played host to the World U23 Ultimate Championships and a staggering 11 WA players filled roles across the 3 representative teams including for the first time ever 2 WA members appointed as Head Coaches for Australian representative teams. Congratulations to Goanna’s players (Open team) on winning a Bronze medal and the other WA players on their strong performances in Toronto. Development Officers I would like to acknowledge all of the work done by our Development Officer, Anna Haynes. Anna worked tirelessly this year to help raise the profile of Ultimate within the Department of Sport and Recreation, in schools and the wider community. In addition to this Anna competed at AUC, WUGC and AMUC and headed up the organising committees for AMUC and Witch’s Hat on top of her busy schedule. I’m sure all players of Ultimate in WA appreciate her superstar efforts. Anna also went on several trips to remote areas of WA to run Ultimate sessions for local young people and helped run the inaugural Broome Hat tournament in 2013. We appreciate the ongoing effort Anna makes to promote Ultimate in WA. In 2013, we have also taken on a second employee, Kyal Oh, who will be focusing on the areas of Inclusion and Youth Development. This is helping WAFDA to better cater for the growing interest in Ultimate, with one of our aims for the coming years being to coordinate the 2013 High School Championships. 2012 saw several changes on the Committee. We said goodbye and thanks to former President, Andrew ‘Hutchy’ Hutcheson, who moved to Canada and a new Executive committee was appointed (President‐ (myself), Treasurer ‐Geri Viros and Secretary ‐Julie Hardt). We also had new general committee members;

3. Financial Report
Geri Viros In the financial period of 2012/2013, the Association received an increase of the annual funding from $10,000 to $28,000 from the Department of Sport and Recreation due to the recognition as a Profile 1 sport. The Association trialled the part time employment of Kyal Oh as a Youth and Inclusion Officer for six months, to strengthen the services provided to youths and schools in WA. The trial was successful and the Association now has two paid employees operating from the office at Murdoch University. The Perth Ultimate League continues to grow with over 200 registered players consistently
competing in the leagues. Player league fees were increased to cover the associated increase costs
of venue hire, the AFDA Event Based Fees and player insurance fees. The Association invested in promotional merchandise consisting of sweat bands, head bands, cleat bags and discs are available for purchase at Perth Ultimate league and will be available from the online shop on the new website. The Information, Communications & Technology (ICT) grant from DSR enabled the Association to purchase iPads, a camera, a new desktop computer and software. This grant also covers the cost of updating the current website. Our annual audit is handled by Eclipse Financial Solutions and will be presented to DSR on
September 9th 2013 as per our funding agreement. A copy can be made available to members
upon written request. Grants received:
DSR (Annual Funding Arrangement) $28 000.00
DSR ICT grant $13 000.00
DSR Regional grant (Broome Development Support) $ 1550.00
Country Scholarship (A. Evans) $ 2200.00
Total grants received: $44 750.00 Closing balances at June 30 2013:
Society account: $ 9 128.25
Savings Account: $12 100.06
Transaction Account: $ 880.19
Net profit for the year: $ 7 936.81 Since signing on as Secretary in 2011 and stepping up as Treasurer in 2012, I have gained so much knowledge and experience about the role of state Associations in the governance and direction of Ultimate in their respective states and how they collaborate to achieve nationwide goals. The experiences I gained by being an Association volunteer was incredibly valuable and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the sport and wants to contribute to growing Ultimate in WA for players and the wider community.

Committee Meetings In addition to an annual planning meeting the WAFDA also conducts monthly meetings as required by the constitution. Monthly reviews of the current Operation Plan and Strategic Plan are conducted and all business relating to the Association is recorded. Communications The WAFDA is committed to improving
communication to our members, sponsors and
stakeholders.
The official monthly electronic news update
provides members current information relating
to Association activities, the website continues to
be a vital communication tool and is constantly
updated with current and relevant news. A new
website is currently under development and is
due for launch in late 2013.
“Ultimatum” is the official newsletter for the Association. Issues are submitted electronically via the WA Ultimate electronic distribution list and are also available for download from the Association website. Social Media With the increase in social media avenues to promote activities, reach a wider audience and stay up to date it is recognised that our Facebook and Twitter portals are an effective tool for communication with members and non‐members alike. The WA Ultimate YouTube channel launches on July 8th 2013.
5. Development Officer Report
Anna Haynes
The original intention of this development
position was to increase the number of people
playing Ultimate in WA by increasing the
awareness of flying disc sports in the wider
community, provide in‐school coaching sessions,
running coaching courses, expanding support in
regional areas and providing administrative
support to the Association’s key volunteers. As
this role develops, changes are inevitable and as
an organisation we strive to improve our new
business structure. In just over two years we
have gone from being 100% volunteer driven to
now having two employees and a head office.
Our funding with the Department of Sport and
Recreation has almost tripled to assist with rapid
our growth and our reach across WA improves
every day.
In addition to liaising with the Department of
Sport and Recreation, coordinating the delivery
of clinics, disc sales and answering the steady
stream of email communications there has also
been a few highlights over the past year to share:
Event Hosting
2012 saw the Australian Mixed Ultimate
Championships rotation head to the west. As
appointed Tournament Director is was a great
opportunity to head up a team of volunteers and
put on a premium national event right here in
Western Australian Flying Disc Association (WAFDA) Inc. ABN: 58 689 743 544

Perth. The event ran smoothly and we hosted 20
teams from across Australia and New Zealand for
the 3 day tournament. The event was even
sweeter with a WA team winning the event for
the first time.
Locally I get to work with Clubs and their hosting
needs in regards to putting on local events.
Assistance through general administration,
budget needs, equipment sourcing and refining
how we collect feedback have all been amongst
the ongoing tasks I tend to on regular basis.
Club Support
With extensive experience in regards to sporting
clubs I really enjoy getting involved with Ultimate
specific club development. This year I have
helped build and maintain several websites for
clubs to help with a pivotal communication tool
for their members. Bunbury, Broome Mandurah
and Murdoch have all received website hosting
and design services from WA Ultimate this year.
As clubs such as Sublime, Murdoch and Broome
look to take the next step forward and become
incorporated I have been able to assist them in
areas of governance, in particular writing and
submitting Constitutions so they can become
legal entities in their own right.
Regional Projects
Some of my favourite moments are when I get to
leave the city behind and heading out into the
regional areas WA has to offer. In January I was
lucky enough to be invited by the Shirt of
Laverton to visit and run Ultimate clinics for their
Indigenous school holiday program. Over 5 days I
travelled to Laverton and Leonora and took on
the heat to deliver Ultimate in remote
communities.
Huge thank you to Rueben Berg from the
Indigenous Ultimate Organisation for donating
discs to this project.
Coaching
In February we held a Level 1 Coaching Course at
Murdoch University. This course is recognised by
the Australian Sports Commission’s National
Coach Accreditation Scheme and involves both
theory and practical requirements. WA added 10
new accredited coaches via this course taking our
new total now to 63.
As the demand increases for in‐school Ultimate
clinics so does our need for casual coaches. We
rely on trustworthy, enthusiastic and skilled
coaches to assist myself and Kyal meet the needs
of school based programs for Ultimate.
I would like to thank Andrew Jennings, Renae
Chick, Tamsin Hearne, Annie Jessop, Jack Morris,
Jaxon Botje and Sam Francoise for all their
valuable assistance over the past year in this
area.

Communications
The majority of my administrative tasks revolve
around communications. Keeping the website
updated, preparing the monthly e‐newsletter and
posting information to our social media sites to
ensure our members are well informed and that
achievements of this great Association are
recorded and shared.
Preparing reports to the Department of Sport and
Recreation each quarter relating to our
Operational and Strategic targets are all part of
the administration hub that is WA Ultimate.

6. Youth & Inclusion Officer Report
Kyal Oh This year I set my sights on adding vital project development research and planning support with Primary and High School opportunities around Perth. One of my roles is to provide support to the WA development officer, whilst delivering in my role as the Youth and Inclusion Officer. 2012‐13 has been a busy year, as the rest of 2012 and early 2013 I carried out my role as a volunteer in the Youth and Inclusion officer. Then in February 2013 becoming an official part time
employ of WA Ultimate under the title of Youth and Inclusion Officer. Since my time as a part time employee for WA Ultimate I have been working on a variety of tasks and projects, some of which include:
School survey:
I developed a School survey to distribute to various schools across the Perth metro area and some Regional schools. The survey was based around sole questions of things we needed to know rather than what we wanted to know. By getting responses I was also able to get a personal contact of someone from the school. Something WA Ultimate has never really had before apart from schools we have previously been in contact with.
The survey involved questions like – do they run Ultimate, who do they run Ultimate for (ages), have they heard of WA Ultimate and are they aware of the services we provide, and would they be interested in a Professional Development day.
I forwarded the survey to various contacts so they could distribute it to their mailing lists and school contacts.
WA Sports Federation E‐Newsletter.
Schools Network (ACHPER)
ISGAA
WA Ultimate’s existing data base from coaching sessions, disc orders, etc.
We offered a prize draw to those participants that filled out the survey. We received 35 responses in the 3 week period that it ran for from various schools, 32 in the metro area and 3 in regional areas. 20 of these schools are running Ultimate and 20 schools (teachers) are interested in attending a Professional Development session.
Further follow up emails and contact has been made with the schools that would like to be involved with WA Ultimate and are interested in attending PD days.
We have sent the response data off to Jess Watts whom works for the City of Swan as a Sports Development officer. Jess is involved in a project

with the Department of Sport and Recreation called “Emerging Professionals volunteer Project”, which requires her to undertake a 40 hour volunteer project. What she will be doing with the data is processing it and cleaning it up to make it into a presentable document.
Teacher Resources Developed:
Rule Modifications:
I created and developed a Rule modifications document for 3 different age brackets. Using this design will help develop and promote youth Ultimate within WA making the game simpler and easier for the children and teachers to understand. The age brackets are 9‐10, 11‐12, and 13‐17. This covers the schooling years of 4‐12.
These Rule modification documents have also been produced into posters to provide to schools so they can hang them around the classroom or office, therefore kids will have constant exposure to them and make great teaching recourses.
Rule Quizzes:
After developing the rule modifications I designed some quizzes to use as teaching recourses. These are again developed in the 3 age brackets and based on the rule modifications for that age group. The 9‐10 bracket involves 10 questions, 11‐12 bracket involves 15 questions, and the 13‐17 bracket involves 20 questions.
The design was based off the preexisting AFDA quiz. However I felt as though it did not cater for a “junior” age and was more a generic quiz for beginner Ultimate players.
GSWAP posters:
I created a poster that Teachers/students can supply in either their classrooms or offices. It is designed to be used as a quick reference guide on how to teach the basic throws with correct technique. It includes pictures and explanations.
Mapping of target areas:
The WA Schools List of 2013, this includes every school, all their details, and number of students. From this list of 750+ schools I went through and created a separate list of “target area schools”.
These target areas are – Murdoch, Medina, Yokine, Perth, Mandurah, and Bunbury.
177 metro area schools we’re targeted and 44 southern region (Bunbury & Albany)
These schools were then placed into a Google map. Marking out every school on this map we then marked our Clubs including, Mandurah, Fear, Primal, and Bunbury. We placed a 5 and 10km radius around the clubs and then we could see which schools were inside that radius making them a higher priority area.
With this map, we can now locate which schools are where and approach them with information about WA Ultimate and the services we provide.
Coaching session report:
Using Google doc’s I created a coaching session report which is to be used by WA Ultimate coaches. The purpose of this report is that after a coaching session being run, you can access the Session Report and fill out the details required.
The report covers – School name, area, session duration, primary/high/PD, ages, travel time, amount of students. By collecting this data from our coaches WA Ultimate is able to keep track of:
What schools we are delivering sessions to.
How long the sessions are running for. What age groups we are covering. How long we are spending traveling to
and from sessions. Most importantly – how many students
are getting exposure to Ultimate.
Carrying out any school sessions booked throughout the year:
Term one and two has been steady we have delivered many sessions to different schools and programs. Some of which include:

Emmanuel Catholic College. Rossmoyne SHS year 12’s and year 10’s. West Beechboro Primary. (whole school
over 2 days) Fair game Australia PD session. Ocean Reef Education network
Professional Development Day Venues West holiday programs. I have also delivered Ultimate coaching
through the company Coach Approach at various schools.
Tournament and league survey and feedback forms:
I developed a Survey and feedback form for tournaments and Perth Ultimate League. The design is based on the template of WA Ultimate’s previous feedback form; however it is now electronic rather than a printed document.
It was developed through Google doc’s and is now easier and more convenient for players to access to provide feedback, for example they could do it at the fields on their phone if they wanted to.
I have also created a similar feedback design for the Perth Ultimate League, also electronic and easy to provide info to. The benefits of having an electronic feedback system rather than paper:
All feedback goes into the one document spreadsheet.
Event info/names can be organised easily.
More convenient for players to fill out.
More chance of receiving greater portions of feedback.
Don’t have to sort through single papers and record data.
WA Ultimate YouTube Channel:
I helped launch the WA ultimate YouTube channel in June/July 2013. This involved a series of U23 personal interviews with athletes. The interviews were conducted, edited and produced throughout a few weeks. We now plan to use our YouTube channel to produce more media coverage on things such as tournaments, Perth Ultimate League, personal team interviews, volunteer profiles etc.
Australian Youth Ultimate Championships 2013:
I have been doing a lot of recruiting, promoting and consulting for the upcoming 2013 AYUC. This year see’s the return of the event since 2009. I am on the Youth subcommittee for the AFDA and have been in constant discussions with members across Australia regarding the upcoming tournament. I have been involved with administrative tasks to help WA Ultimate and its involvement with the 2013 AYUC.

Last October Perth hosted the 2012 Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships. 322 participants descended upon the lush green fields at UWA Sports Park for three days of fierce Ultimate competition that this peak mixed gender event has to offer. 20 teams from across Australian and New Zealand headed to Perth to take part in the peak mixed tournament this country has to offer. 78 games over 3 days were hosted UWA Sports Park (aka the best fields in the country). Without a hardworking group of volunteers this amazing event would not have been possible. The tournament organising committee (TOC) worked for 12 months to put on a great show, sweet fields, great party and amazing food were definite highlights. The members of the TOC for AMUC 2012 were:
WA based team “Cabs are Here” went undefeated throughout the tournament and in a great grand final
battle, took home the gold medal over NSW based team “Friskee”. Hybrid Vigour (VIC) took out third place
and Burley Griffins (ACT) were winners of the prestigious Spirit Award. This was the first time the Australian
Mixed Ultimate Championships has been hosted in Perth since it began in 1998 and the first time a WA
team has ever won the event.
Thank you to all competitors and the numerous event volunteers who dedicated their time to making this event a success. A very special mention to John Hempel (AFDA National Events Director) without John’s help this event would not have been the success it was. John volunteered his time to direct the actual event so that the WA members of the TOC could all play in the event. The WA Flying Disc Association is extremely grateful for this support. It was vital there was a trustworthy, experienced Ultimate events specialist taking care of the overall management and timing of the event. Thanks John.

9. Ultimate Legends
The Ultimate Legend award is an initiative of the Australian Flying Disc Association, each state is provided with 4 uniquely branded discs to award to key volunteer contributors. These discs cannot not be purchased they can only be earned. The WA Flying Disc Association is extremely proud of
these amazing contributors to Ultimate here in WA. Thank you to the Australian Flying Disc Association for providing the "Ultimate Legend" discs and the opportunity to recognise our awesome volunteers and their efforts.

Geri Viros Geri has been on the WAFDA committee for over two years stepping up to the role of Secretary in 2011 and is now the chief financial officer aka the WAFDA Treasurer. She is a key WA volunteer not only on the WAFDA Committee, but also helps out with the Ninjas Ultimate Club and Mixed Nationals team WordArt. Geri was instrumental in the delivery of the 2012 Phoenix Has Risen (WA State Mixed Ultimate Championships) and even ensures that scoreboards are bought to league each week. In her spare time she recently ran the half marathon at this year's City to Surf and finished in a very impressive time of 01:37:57 for the 21km event. Kyal Oh This is Kyal's second year on the WAFDA committee in the role of Youth and Inclusion Officer. After a nasty accident left him with burns to his face, hands and legs, Kyal was limited in his options for getting back in to regular physical activity ‐ Ultimate provided a perfect non‐contact environment and he has been addicted ever since. As a player he was awarded the 2011 Rookie of the Year award and earned a spot on the 2011 Mixed Team, WordArt and also the 2012 Sublime Open team. As volunteer he gives up time to deliver coaching sessions in regional areas, is the assistant Coach at PRIMAL Ultimate Club, conducts a ridiculous amount of sessions in local schools including work with Wheelchair Sports WA and helped move the entire contents from the old storage unit to the new office in one day. David Shackles "D‐Shack" does an amazing job with the league director duties each week. He has taken the organisation and structure to a new level while catering to growing participation numbers. He bought back the WA State Indoor Championships and has run it successfully for the past two years. He is a key driver and recruiter for his league team Disco Inferno ensuring there is a team at both the Perth Ultimate League and Yokine Social League.
Jed Yu Not only has Jed sold the most WA Ultimate discs ever by an individual (24) he has been instrumental in recruiting a whole new team, AmpliFIRE. AmpliFIRE were the first new team to support the new Riverton Social League and putting his Level One coaching accreditation into good use, he continues to run weekly sessions for his new recruits and got his squad of 21 to the 2012 WA State Mixed Championships complete with awesome team uniforms.
10. Marketing and Media
My goal this year was to increase media communication about Ultimate to increase awareness of the sport in WA and help grow player numbers. To do this I have attempted to leverage our high‐performance events and players. Media Releases were prepared and released prior to significant events for the sport and I’m happy that this has resulted in some media coverage:

● Media coverage for AMUC in Oct 2013 ‐ successfully achieved multiple local newspaper articles before and after this event and coverage on well‐read news website PerthNow.com.au
● Media release for AUC 2013 ‐ distributed
but not picked up as far as I know.
● Media release for U23’s and coaches ‐
distributed but not picked up this time
● Other ‐ Discussions have been held with
Peter Vlahos regarding a story on Channel 9 &/or 6PR when the Footy season is over.
The WA Ultimate website is now in the final
stages of being upgraded, this will feature a new
section to showcase how Ultimate has featured in
the WA media.
Facebook pages were also created for WA single
gender teams Sublime and Kaos to appeal to
“supporters” of Ultimate in WA. This has helped
expand our reach outside our normal followers of
the WA Ultimate page which is skewed toward
communication with players.
I was also involved in introducing WA Ultimate
Merchandise which was set up as a new revenue
stream, as well as a new method of getting the
“WA Ultimate” brand out in the community.
Merchandise has been promoted through the
website, the Facebook page and through posters
at the fields. Uptake has been reasonable but
could be improved with additional volunteers and
resources. We are also expecting sales to improve
when the online store is complete.
I’ll be looking to run a Facebook promotion
November with the objective being to increase
Christmas merchandise “gift” sales and to gain
more Facebook followers to increase awareness
of the brand and sport. The basic concept will be
Facebook “likers” must share a photo/poster to
go into the draw to win a set of WA Ultimate
Merchandise.
Also on my agenda is a strategy to
accommodate/increase spectators at key state
events. I think this is a vital step in securing
government and corporate recognition and
sponsorship in future but will require additional
input from other volunteers.
Preliminary discussions have been held with Anna
regarding a review of our “Clubs” policy to make it
simpler for developing clubs to become affiliated,
and to provide those new clubs with the structure
and resources required to grow and operate. This
is a necessary step to accommodate for the
growth in player numbers we have experienced
this year and can expect moving forward.
