Summer Riding Season
Spring has sprung. Fall has fell. Summer's
here, and it's hot as .... it was last summer. It's
funny, but it seems to catch us by surprise every
year. It's June in south Texas and it's going to get
hot. Get used to it, huh? So the question is how?
Some tips for hot weather riding are common
sense. Stay hydrated. Water, not soda. Dress to
the weather, but be ready for a change. Stuff like
that. But with the wealth of riding experience in
our chapter, what more can we learn? Watch
some of our more experienced members and see
what they do. How do they handle heat? What do
they do differently in terms of maintenance of
their bike? How do they alter their behavior? We
can pick up tips from almost anyone.
Here are some ideas that I've tried to make
life a little more comfortable on summer roads.
Some are more effective than others.
Drink water as you ride, not just when you
stop. I've used a camelback backpack in the past
in hot weather. I filled it with ice water and was
able to drink hands free as I rode. It worked out
well. I've been experimenting with a long straw
and thermal cup for a while. I've yet to achieve
"camelback-like" results, but it's a work in
progress. Smart Water, Vitamin Water, and
electrolyte drinks like Propel are also effective in
keeping you hydrated.
Dress accordingly. There are many options
for shirts that can make life a bit cooler. Long
sleeve white cotton shirts are standard and work
well. The long sleeves protect your arms from
sunburn and white tends to reflect some heat.
Many manufacturers also make active wear
fabrics that wick away moisture and keep you
cooler. I usually try to purchase my hot weather
gear in the winter when it goes on sale. Cooling
vests work well, but do require water to work.
They get heavy when they are wet and can feel
clammy when you put them on. But once you get
moving.... it's worth it. A mesh jacket gives you
protection and still allows airflow.
Remember to factor in the Texas sun! If you
were headed to the beach, you would not forget
your two most needed items: sun block and
sunglasses. Very few "souvenirs" can ruin a
perfect ride as quickly as a sunburn. And yes,
you can sunburn your eyes. Don't scrimp on
quality. Remember, thousands of lifeguards can't
be wrong! Lenses should block UVa and UVb
rays. Polarized lenses block glare. So, protect
your eyes, get a better view of the road, AND
look cool at the same time. It's a Win/Win.... and
another Win. Make sure your sunblock has
enough SPF and is sweat proof. Sunscreen mixed
with sweat really burns your eyes; particularly if
it wasn't really effective against why you put it
on! Been there/done that. Not fun. Again, spend
the few extra bucks to get the good stuff.
I'm looking forward to hitting the road this
summer. Teresa and I have already booked our
lodging for Wing Ding. I hope you are looking
forward to it as well. Last year, Teresa and I
spent a couple of days in Nashville and we really
enjoyed it.
I want to thank all the chapter members that
made the chapter rally a success. I would like to
ask your assistance in making next year even better. We have been asked to move our event to

mid-April district rally will be held 30 Apr to 2
May. Our "best date" for the rally is mid-April, I
agreed. I know my signs to the event were too
small. Next year, big and colorful! If you have
ideas as to how to make our event better, please -
write them down and give them to me at the next
chapter gathering. Also, please feel free to let us
know what DOESN'T need to change. That's
important as well.
Ride safe!

Dog days of Summer are here
Well, here we are at the end of May and Summer is
fast approaching. With this comes heat and
humidity. The heat is the main issue that we have to
contend with living in South Central Texas like we
do as it can often be between 90 and 100 degrees or
more in the afternoon. The key thing to keep in mind
when riding is to stay hydrated and cool (if you can
imagine that). Wicking clothing will help to keep
you cool as well as mesh or textile jackets. Since we
promote ATGATT, safety is always a concern when
riding. You may also wish to look into a cooling vest
or something like LD Comfort or Under Armour base
layer clothing.
The real concern of all riders should be their health
before, during and after the trip. While we all hate to
miss a ride, riding while sick is definitely not a way
to get better soon. I’ve given up over a month of
riding because of a cold, but I would rather miss the
ride than have to take a bunch of sick days because I
rode while I was sick and prolonged the illness.
Several of our members returned from our combined
Texas District Rally in Paris, TX and our Spring ride
to Branson, MO. We were fortunate that there was
no rain on our riding days, and the days it did rain,
we were able to stay indoors and dry. This type of
weather could very well have led to illness, but
because we decided to wait out the storms, we all
avoided catching a cold. We all returned home safely
with no ill effects from the ride.

Randy & Kathy Reese - Texas District Educators
Hello Texas Riders!
Riding season is back in full swing in Texas. If you missed the District Rally last week in Paris, you
missed some great rides! District Ride Coordinators Butch and Marie Schmit put together several great
loops and a photography challenge that was enjoyed by everyone who participated.
Many chapters are planning extended rides the next few months. Our chapter is heading out for a week
trip to Palo Duro Canyon in early June. It is always a good idea, especially if you are riding as a group, to
review basic Group Riding skills before leaving. GWRRA has an excellent Team Riding seminar and
Ride Captain training available to help everyone feel more comfortable riding with a group.
Even if you don’t take a class, there are several good resources out there that can help you plan a safer
group ride including:
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has a free manual www.msf-usa.org/downloads/Group_Ride.pdf
Markel Insurance https://www.markelinsurance.com/resources/motorcycle/group-riding-tips
Motorcycle Legal Foundation https://www.motorcyclelegalfoundation.com/motorcycle-group-riding-tips/
Motorcycle Touring Tips https://www.motorcycletouringtips.com/motorcycle-group-riding-protocol/
Plan your rides carefully, communicate well to your members, and have fun!
Putting on my Motorist Awareness hat for a moment, another event that I always try to promote is:
28th Annual Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day Monday, June 17th 2019
Goal - To encourage record-setting numbers of riders to participate.
Spread the word by every means possible - word of mouth, print ads,
web banner ads, blog posts, news and magazine articles, press coverage,
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube...
Help make this the largest, most impactful Ride to Work Day to date!
Public service ads, web banners, posters and more free propaganda
material at: www.ridetowork.org/ride-to-work-day-ads
Help spread the word about the 28th Annual Ride To Work Day and
increase public and governmental awareness about the societally
positive values of transportation and utility riding.
More information on RTW Day is available at the Ride to Work Day website: http://www.ridetowork.org
Enjoy the weather while it is still relatively pleasant. Take frequent breaks. Stay hydrated. Enjoy our
sport.
Ride Safely, Ride Often, and HEY!!! Be careful Out There!

Welcome to GWRRA Texas Chapter H
2019 TX District Rally Paris TX and 4th annual TX-H Spring ride thru Arkansas to Ozark Mountains
Missouri.
All had a fantastic time at the TX District Rally in Paris, TX. TX-H was the largest pre-registered chapter
and probably the largest chapter at the event with 11 members. 5/16 Thursday was Opening Ceremony
where it was announced that the 2020 TX District Rally will be held 30 Apr to 2 May 2020 in Kerrville,
TX with a possible ride after the rally. We enjoyed the vendors, local rides, down town merchant walk,
light show, ice cream social, which was held at South Main Iron Powersports downtown and located in an
old 1930’s Chrysler dealership being fixed up, the dealership gave us a tour of all the great things they are
doing. We even had a local man give us a tour of a building he purchased and is remodeling with business
on first floor and his home on second. Saturday brought storms and closing ceremonies. Due to weather
Saturday we delayed our Spring Ride till Sunday when the weather was to turn better.
Sunday morning and the storms have cleared. So off we go thru Arkansas to Branson, Missouri. We made
are way thru some cool roads one of which is Pig Trail Scenic Byway Hwy 23 one of twistiest roads in
the country. We also noticed around how high the lakes and waterways where. Branson, Missouri is
beautiful area and very hilly. I don’t think there’s a flat spot to be found, you’re either aimed up or down
stopping or parking. Monday, we took off for a very nice ride in the area which included Peel Ferry, last
public ferryboat operating in MO crossing Bull Shoals Lake. Storms moved into the area Tuesday so we
toughed it out and had chili social. Wednesday weather had cleared so we checked out and started to
make our way home through Oklahoma with an overnight stop in TX. Thursday, we made our way home
with a stop at Koffe Kup restaurant in Hico, TX for lunch and pie.
Thanks go out to all who made the Rally and Spring ride such a success and fun time.
