ABOUT LEED

GREAT, SO WHAT?

LEED V3TRIED AND TRUE

LEED NC /LEED CI - 3 points (7.5%)• IEQ c3.1• IEQ c3.2• IEQ c5

LEED EBOM – 1 Prereq and 2 points (5%)• IEQ p1 – Minimum indoor air quality performance • IEQ c1.4 – Reduce particulates in air distribution• IEQ c1.5 – IAQ Plan for facility alterations

LEED Homes 1 Prereq and up to 2 points (4.5%)• IEQp7.1 – Good Filters• IEQc7.2/7.3 – Better/Best Filters

HOW DOES FILTRATION APPLY?

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION

IEQ C3.1 – DURING CONSTRUCTIONIf permanently installed air handlers are used during construction, filtration media must be used at each return air grille that meets one of the following criteria below. • Filtration media with a minimum efficiency reporting

value (MERV) of 8 • Filtration media is Class F5 or higher, as defined by

CEN Standard EN 779-2002• Filtration media with a minimum dust spot efficiency

of 30% or higher and greater than 90% arrestance on a particle size of 3–10 µg

Replace all filtration media immediately prior to occupancy.

IEQ C3.2 – INDOOR AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLAN, BEFORE OCCUPANCY

After construction ends, prior to occupancy and with all interior finishes installed:• Install new filtration media and perform a

building flush-out by supplying a total air volume of 14,000 cubic feet of outdoor air per square foot (4,500 cubic meters of outdoor air per square meter) of floor area while maintaining an internal temperature of at least 60° F (15° C) and relative humidity no higher than 60%. Replace filtration media after flushout is complete.

IEQ C5 – INDOOR CHEMICAL AND POLLUTANT SOURCE CONTROL

In mechanically ventilated buildings, each ventilation system that supplies outdoor air shall comply with the following:• Particle filters or air cleaning devices shall be provided to

clean the outdoor air at any location prior to its introduction to occupied spaces. – Filtration media is rated at a minimum efficiency reporting value

(MERV) of 13 or higher – Filtration media is Class F7 or higher, as defined by CEN

Standard EN 779: 2002– Filtration media has a minimum dust spot efficiency of 80% or

higher and greater than 98% arrestance on a particle size of 3–10 µg.

• Clean air filtration media shall be installed in all air systems after completion of construction and prior to occupancy.

LEED FOR EXISTING BUILDINGS

IEQ P1 – MINIMUM INDOOR AIR QUALITY PERFORMANCE

Implement and maintain an HVAC system maintenance program to ensure the proper operations and maintenance of HVAC components as they relate to outdoor air introduction and exhaust.

IEQ C1.4 – REDUCE PARTICULATES IN AIR DISTRIBUTION

To reduce exposure of building occupants and maintenance personnel to potentially hazardous particulate contaminants, which adversely affect air quality, human health, building systems and the environment.

IEQC1.4 CONTINUEDEach ventilation system that supplies outdoor air shall comply with the following during the performance period:• Particle filters or air cleaning devices shall clean the outdoor

air at any location prior to its introduction to occupied spaces.• These filters or devices shall meet one of the following criteria

for all outside air intakes and inside air recirculation returns:– Filtration Media is rated a minimum efficiency reporting

value (MERV) of 13 – Filtration media is Class F7 or higher, as defined by

CEN Standard EN 779: 2002– Filtration media has a minimum dust spot efficiency of

80% or higher and greater than 98% arrestance on a particle size of 3–10 µg

• Establish and follow a regular schedule for maintenance and replacement of these filtration media according to the manufacturer’s recommended interval.

IEQ C1.5 – IAQ PLAN FOR FACILITY ALTERATIONS

If permanently installed air handlers are used during construction, filtration media must be used at each return air grille that meets one of the following criteria below. Replace all filtration media immediately prior to occupancy.• Filtration media with a minimum efficiency reporting

value (MERV) of 8 • Filtration media is Class F5 or higher, as defined by

CEN Standard EN 779-2002• Filtration media with a minimum dust spot efficiency

of 30% or higher and greater than 90% arrestance on a particle size of 3–10 µg

IEQ C1.5 CONTINUED

After construction ends, prior to occupancy and with all interior finishes installed, install new filtration media and perform a building flush-out by supplying a total air volume of 14,000 cubic feet of outdoor air per square foot (4,500 cubic meters of outdoor air per square meter) of floor area while maintaining an internal temperature of at least 60° F (15° C) and relative humidity no higher than 60%.

Replace all filtration media after flushout is complete.

LEED FOR HOMES

IEQ 7 – AIR FILTERING

• Requirement – use MERV 8 Filtration

• IEQ7.2/7.3 – Better/Best Filters – use air filters that are MERV 10 or MERV 13
