■ The medical marijuana movement in the US hasbeen dealt a serious blow with the US Supreme Courtruling against the medical use of the drug, reports theBMJ. The unanimous decision makes no exceptionwhatsoever for marijuana since, under federal law, it isan illegal substance. However, at a time when themedical use of marijuana is gaining acceptance, thedecision is likely to pit state laws against federal laws.*Arguments for compassionate use of marijuana inmedical cases brought by the Oakland CannabisBuyers’ Cooperative were rejected by the court.* see PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 238: 12, 13 Nov1999; 800804630
