The“RevolutionsandTheirAftermaths”WorkingGroupattheUCSDHumanitiesCenteremphasizesstudiesofRevolutionsthroughouttheworld,bothintheformerSovietUnionandelsewhere.Thegroupdiscussesrecentpublicationsandshowcasestheresearchoffacultyandgraduatestudentsacrossdisciplines.Thisyear’smeetingshaveincludedadiscussionofthewritingsoftherecentNobellaureateinLiterature,SvetlanaAlexievich(pictured),aneventsponsoredjointlywiththeUCSD“Kruzhok”.ProfessorAmeliaGlaserpresentedonliteraryrepresentationsofthe1648CossackUprisinginUkraine.IntheWinter,UCSDalumnusProfessorElenaAronova(UCSB)spokeonColdWardatascience;ProfessorMaxParra(UCSD,Literature)onliteratureandphotographyoftheMexicanRevolution;andProfessorMarciShore(Yale)onUkraine’sEuromaidan.ThegroupsSpringQuartereventsincludedco-sponsoring,withProfessorBabakRahimi,asymposiumonthe1979IranianRevolution.

DearFriendsoftheREEESProgram,The2015-16academicyearstartedwithgratifyingnewsforscholarsofRussiaandEasternEuropewhenwriterandjournalistSvetlanaAlexievich,wasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiterature.AtUCSD,wehaveworkedtointegrateinnovativecontemporarywritersandartistslikeAlexievichintoourundergraduatecurriculumbyexpandingourmajorandminortoincludeabroaderrangeofcoursesandmorecontemporarytopics.Ourprogram,foundeddecadesagotostudytheSovietUnion,iscurrentlyrestructuringitsrequirementstoallowstudentsmoreflexibilityinstudyingthebroaderregionandlanguagesofEasternEuropeandEurasia.

Thisyear,UCSD’sRussianclubhasseenanewsurgeinactivity.ProfessorRebeccaWellsandRussianlanguageTeachingAssistantTeresaKuruchave,togetherwithalargegroupofUCSDundergraduates,heldregularfilmscreenings,artisticevenings,andcelebrationsoncampus.OurnewundergraduatepeeradvisorSavannahHansenhasofferedguidancetonewmajorsandminors.Manyofourrecentgraduatesarepursuinggraduatestudyorembarkingoncareersinrelatedareas.Thisspring,wewelcomedournewcoordinator,MitzyMartinez(pictured).Mitzyhasover10yearsofexperienceinhighereducationandhasworkedatbothUCSDandUCRiverside.SheenjoysworkingwithstudentsandwatchingdocumentariesabouttheRussianEmpire.Finally,wearepleasedtointroduceourREEESlogo!ThiscomesthankstotheeffortsofCyndiDillonandHelenOlow,theManagementServicesOfficer(MSO)oftheUCSD’sInstituteforArtsandHumanities,whichwillbringtogethermanyofUCSD’sareastudiesandinterdisciplinaryprograms.Thisnewcenterwillsupportseveralprograms,includingREEES,makingcoursesandpubliceventsmoreaccessibletostudentsandothermembersoftheUCSDcommunity.IwanttoextendmyheartfeltthankstothecommunitymemberswhohavesupportedREEESatUCSDthroughdonationsandyourpresenceatourevents,toourwonderfulpastprogramcoordinatorSallyHargateandournewcoordinatorMitzyMartinez,andtoourfacultyandstudents,whoseintellectualcuriosityfuelsourprogram.Thanksgo,inparticular,toTeresaKurucforherworkonthisnewsletter.

REEESAlumniMakeStridesintheFieldElenaAronova(Ph.D.History,2012)beganatenure-trackfacultypositionatUCSBthisWinterintheHistoryoftheLifeSciences.LastSpring,shetaughtattheGraduateSchoolofEastandSoutheastEuropeanStudiesandattheLudwig-Maximilians-Universität.München.SheiscurrentlycompletingabooktitledScienceandtheCulturalColdWar:ThinkingScienceontheOppositeSidesoftheIronCurtain,andresearchingasecondbookprojectonthepoliticsandpracticesofenvironmentalarchivesinthe1950s-1970s.Herrecentarticlesinclude“BigScienceand

‘BigScienceStudies’intheUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionduringtheColdWar,”InScienceandTechnologyintheGlobalColdWar,eds.NaomiOreskesandJohnKrige(TheMITPress,2014):393-430.“EnvironmentalMonitoringintheMaking:FromSurveyingNature’sResourcestoMonitoringNature’sChange,”HistoricalSocialResearch40(2015).

Beginningin1919,the“ThirdInternational”wasatransnationalpoliticalendeavorthataimedtospreadcommunismworldwide.Thisenormousendeavorincludedartandliterature,aswellasapoliticalagenda.ProfessorAmeliaGlaser(Literature)andProfessorStevenLee(UCBerkeley)collaborativelyconvenedaconferenceatUCBerkeleyinApril2015ontheaestheticsoftheComintern.TheeventgatheredscholarsfromtheUSandbeyond,includingUCSD’sProfessorLuisMartinCabrera(LiteraturesinSpanish)todiscusstheliteraryandartisticeffectsoftheCommunistInternational.GlaserandLeearecurrentlyeditingascholarlyvolumeonthetopic,andtothatend,ledaworkshoponthetopicattheUCHumanitiesResearchInstituteinIrvineinJanuary2016foragroupofgraduatestudents.UCSD’sTeresaKurucwasamongthoseparticipatingintheweeklongworkshop.

UndergraduatePeerAdvisorSavannahHansenisafifthyearREEESmajorwhofellinlovewiththeRussianlanguageandtheREEESprograminherveryfirstcourses.ShehopestoencouragestudentstoenrollinREEESbysharingherenthusiasmforthecoursesandtheprofessors.Inhertimeasapeeradvisor,SavannahhasusedherknowledgeoftheREEESprogramtohelpfellowstudentsnavigatetheprogram’srequirementsandanswertheirquestionsaboutmajoringinREEES.

Dr.CassandraHartblay(CoLEDPostdoctoralResearcher,Dept.ofCommunication,UCSD)receiveda2016-2017FISPgranttopursuethedevelopmentandproductionofaperformanceethnographyprojectthatlinksRussianStudies,DisabilityStudies,Theatre,andQualitativeResearch.TheprojectbringsadocumentaryplaybasedonethnographicinterviewswithadultswithdisabilitiesinRussiatoUCSD.Dr.HartblayconductedtheinterviewsinpersoninRussianduringfieldworkin2012-2014,thentranslatedandadaptedtheplayscriptbasedoninterviewtranscripts.InJanuary,Dr.HartblaysharedexcerptsfromadraftoftheplayscriptwiththeUCSDcommunityinatablereadingpresentedaspartoftheStudioforEthnographicDesignPerformanceEthnographyLabseries.InFebruary,theplaywasworkshoppedandpresentedasastagedreadingatUNC-CH(Dr.Hartblay'sPhDinstitution),includingtalkbacksessionswiththecastandwithapanelofscholars.Staytunedfornewsaboutafallproductionoftheplay,IWASNEVERALONE(https://cassandrahartblay.com/i-was-never-alone/),onOctober6-9,2016,atUCSD,andavisitfromRussiantheateranddisabilityadvocacycolleagues.

wastheproductionstagemanageroftheplay,whichfeaturedUCSDMastersstudentsinTheaterandDance.ThisoutstandingadaptationofChekhov’stimelessplayaboutpropertyandfamilyshowedtherelevanceoftheturnofthecenturytopictocontemporaryCalifornia.Thewell-lovedstorypresentsthemesofculturalfutilityinthecontextofturnofthecenturyRussiaandreflectssocialchangesandforcesatworkaroundtheglobeinthatperiod.(PhotobyJimCarmody.)

Europe.SnyderistheauthoroffivebooksonEuropeanhistory,includingBloodlands:EuropebetweenHitlerandStalin.Thetalk,sponsoredjointlybyHistory,EuropeanStudies,JewishStudies,andtheHolocaustLivingHistoryWorkshop,drewalargecrowdofUCSDfaculty,students,andcommunitymembers.

Since1998,theSanDiegoRussianSchool(SDRS–www.sdrussianschool.com)haswelcomedK-12kidsfromalloverSanDiegoCountyforSundayclassesinRussiangrammar,literature,history,andarts.Theprogressithasmadein2015,inpartnershipwithREEES,hasallowedtheschooltoservemorestudentsinnewways.Thisspring,theschooladdedtwoelectivesthathelpedemphasizeproblemsolving--mathandprogramming,bothtaughtinRussian.Theschool’ssubjectscomplementmatheducationindayschool,andbuildself-confidenceandreadinesstomeetfuturechallengesinhighschool,college,andprofessionalwork.Inadditiontoregularclasses,SDRShasstartedaspeakerseriescalled“InsightintoProfessions.”Severaltimesayear,professionalsfromtheRussian-speakingcommunitygivepresentationsabouttheirworkandhobbies.Thisyearstudentshavelistenedtolecturesaboutarchitecture,filmmaking,andteaching.InMarch2015,SDRSstudentsheldareal-timeSkypeteleconferencingsessionwithRussianstudentslivinginKostroma.ThoughSDRSstudentsandstudentsinRussiahavedifferentschoolsystemsanddifferentafter-schoolactivities,theyfoundalotincommon,especiallyfavoritebooks(theHarryPotterseriesisthecrowdfavoriteamongbothgroupsofstudents).

ThisyearUCSDRussianlanguageundergraduateAliciaRorabaugh,throughtheUCSDAcademicInternshipProgram,workedwiththestudentstobetterunderstandthecollegeapplicationprocess.Aliciagaveatalkonhowtoprepareforcollegeandonthealternativesto4-yearcollegeeducation.AliciaalsoworkedonarelatedprojectwithScrippsInstitutescientistElenaYulaeva,“GlobalForestLink”.SponsoredbytheWorldResourcesInstitute,theprojectaimedatconnectingRussianandU.S.highschoolstudentsthroughdiscussionofenvironmentalproblemsintheircommunities.Studentscollectedphotosfromneighborhoodforests,comparedthemwithsatelliteimages,andanalyzedtheirfindingsduringreal-timeSkypemeetings.SaysYulaeva,“WeareveryhappywiththegrowthofSDRSandarelookingforwardtonewcollaborationswithREEES.”

ThestudentsinUCSD’sRussianClubareactiveinthecampuscommunity!Thisfall,theyhostedRussiancuisineandmovienights,andin
