Function Tables

Rube Goldberg, a famous cartoonist, invented machines that perform ordinary tasks in extraordinary ways. Each machine operates according to a rule, or a set of steps, to produce a particular output.

Machine #1 Ok, so let’s say we have a machine that

makes shoes…… Every time you put materials into the machine, the machine makes a shoes, right? Is the machine ever going to make a bracelet?Does it matter what I put into the machine?

GUESS WHAT?!?!

Functions are just like machines. Whatever you put into the equation (x) you will always do the same operations to it and get an output (y)

Example:

No matter what number I put in for x; I will always multiply it by 10 and add 5!

y = 10x

OutputInput

Y = 10x

Very Important information

brought to you by the United

States Department of Mathematics

In a function, the value of y (the output) is determined by the value of x (the input)
