BOW POINT NURSERYNURSERY
The main focus of the nursery is native woody plants of Southern Alberta. To aid in the success of a landscape, we also have available, mulch and compost. We bring in wood chips from several arborist companies, reshred the chips to provide a smaller more effecient chip which stays in place in windy areas. Our compost is from sawdust and horse manure. This seems to be the best blend of nutrient and bulking organic material. It is also what we use in the nursery to maintain our soils.
Recently we have been bringing in logs from arborist removals to mill into boards and benches. We are calling these products Rescue Wood - diverted from the landfill to our mill.

The Paskapoo Poplar - a new introduction from Bow Point Nursery which will address the issues concerning poplars. Paskapoo is a longer lived, drought tolerant selection of a Balsam Poplar. It’s dwarf character makes it suitable for urban yards
Bow Point NurseryA Sustainable approach to growing plants
for environmentally conscience landscapes. For those who wish to have
their landscapes mimic the ideals of nature. If you have traveled about
Southern Alberta and marveled at the native ecosystems - from the montane to
the prairies - you will have an appreciation for the indigenous plants
which grow in these habitats.
We have the plants and the methods to replicate the native ecosystems - on a
small yard scale to a sub-division scale.
After many years of testing and trialing a multitude of native woody plants of
Southern Alberta, we have come to the conclusion (and proven) the natives are drought tolerant, insect tolerant, disease
resistant, chinook resistant and much more stable in an urban or rural landscape
than most of the introduced plants.
We produce plants at our nursery , located west of Calgary in the Springbank area,
with methods we have developed for growing in the area. Our plants are
genetically programed to survive in this climate, having evolved over thousands of years to thrive under the conditions which exist here. The transition zone
between the prairies and the foothills is a very challenging and difficult area in
which we grow. The cold nights of the foothills and the drought of the prairies
both limit what can succeed in our landscapes.
The native plants address all of these issues. Because they overwinter (and
summer ) better the plants are stronger and healthier.
