Around the World

Giant’s Causeway

• This unique geological formation is located on the northeastern coast of

Ireland.

• Giant’s Causeway is the result of a volcanic eruption, and is an area made

up of approximately 40,000 basalt columns.

• Irish legend claims that the famous columns were built by a giant.

Reed Flute

Cave

• This unique formation is famously located in

Guangxi, China.

• Made of limestone, the Reed Flute Cave

features multicolored lighting which has made

this location a leading attraction for over 1200

years.

• This 180 million year old cave got its name

from the type of reeds (renowned for their use

in flute making) that grow outside of the

entrance.

Grand Canyon

• This grand geological formation is neighbor to the Colorado River in

Arizona, USA.

• In 1908, the Grand Canyon officially became a United States national

monument.

• This national monument is 277 miles long; at it’s widest it stretches to 18

miles in width, and reaches up to a mile in depth.

Devil’s Tower

• This igneous intrusion is

located in northeastern

Wyoming, USA.

• It was declared the first

national monument by

President Theodore Roosevelt

in 1906.

• Devil’s Tower receives about

400,000 visitors a year, though

only about 1% of them climb it.

Yellowstone

• Yellowstone National Park , including the Yellowstone Caldera and supervolcano, are located in northwestern Wyoming.

• Yellowstone is home to Old Faithful, a famous geyser that erupts every 91 minutes.

• North America’s largest supervolcano can be found here.

Isle of Staffa & Fingal’s Cave

• The uninhabited Island of Staffa is located in the Inner Hebrides of

Scotland.

• Fingal’s Cave is classified as a sea cave and is part of the Isle of Staffa.

• The major features of this beautiful landmark are the hexagonally jointed

basalt columns that line the sides of the island, including Fingal’s cave.

Kannesteinen

• This famous mushroom shaped rock

is located in the rural village of

Oppedal, Norway.

• The unique shape was achieved by

enduring thousands of years of ocean

waves crashing upon it.

• It stands only three feet tall, but it has

still become a popular tourist

destination due to its fascinating

hourglass figure.

Moeraki Boulders

• These legendary mudstone boulders rest

along the Koekohe Beach in New Zealand.

• They are scattered along the beach, both

isolated and in clusters.

• These boulders are renowned for their

unnatural largeness, as well as their

puzzling placement.
