THIS is tho predestined year in whichthe Star of Bethlehem reappears 1nthe heavens to herald the battle of

Armageddon. Already in the evening skle3the star, which is really a comet, is dimlydiscernible, and as tho titanic conflict nowraging reaches its climax it will bo visibleto all fives.

This celestial body has Recently beennamed by astronomers .* "D'elevan'sComet," but it has always been known toastrologers as "the Star of Bethlehem."It may be seen in North America about10 o'clock on clear nights at a point al¬most directly below tho Pole Star. Astho night wane3 it rises higher in theheavens, nnd "in tho oarly morning be¬tween 2 and 4 o'clock it reaches its great¬est altitude aboyo tho horizon.A great mass of interesting evidenco has

been collected to show that the presentcomet is really the Star of Bethlehem.These facts should interest both scepticalscientists and those who devoutly believein astrology. A noted astrologer, who isalso a competent scientific astronomer, hasshown that the present comet will in De-.cember 25 occupy almost tho same posi¬tion in the heavens that was occupied bythe star whose'appearance is described inthe Gospels. He has calculated closely theposition of the star at that time from theaccounts in the Bible and from other rec¬ords. Of course there has been a certainchange of position in tho two thousandyears that have passed due to the factthat all the heavenly bodies are moving.

It may l>e recalled that some people be¬lieved that Halley's comet which reap¬peared in lf»lo was the Star of Bethlehem,but astronomers have shown that thiscomet could not have appeared in the firstyear of the Christian era, whereas thepresent comet may have been seen at thattime and judging from its present appear¬ance occupied the quarter of the. Heavens,i'.' e.. "in the East," which is clearly indi¬cated by the Bible.The Star was first observed by man¬

kind during the cruelties committed byKing Herod in Palestine. It then guidedtho three wise men from the East to themanger where the Saviour was born.Whenever it has appeared since thpn it

has betokened an event of the utmost irn-

portance to humanity. It was seen in10G6, the year of the Norman Conquestof England, as the ancient Bayeux tap¬estry, woven at that time, clearly proves.Again it was seen in the year l-IJOO wheuthe Crusaders took Jerusalem and- theHoly Sepulchro'^rom the infidels.To the eyes, of those who saw it in 1300

it appeared to take the form of a flamingsword, a fact attested by ancient chroni¬cles and a sculpture in Rhelms Cathedral.The pious beholders were confirmed intheir belief that this was the Star of Betli-iehein because they believed it was a ful¬fillment of the Saviour's prophecy "I 'camenot to snnd peace, but a sword." Perfumes Any Woman May Make at Homa*EDAIt has been employed ev»r since the days ofSolomon as a perfume. It Is used in sticks forburning, laid among clothes in drawers to pre¬

vent. moths, and distilled Into a fragrant oil, which isused in the making: of various delightful scents. Anexcellent perfume for the handkerchief may be madeas follows: Otto of cedar, one-fourth ounce; rectifiedspirit, one pint; triple esprit de jose, one ounce.

Eglantine or swcot briar yields a most delicious per¬fume when fresh, but loses its fragrance in manufac¬ture. A good imitation, however, may be obtained, andgood imitations of the odor of lime tree blossom andof white lilac are also made, the delicacy of these ren¬dering them peculiarly charming.

> Rose leaves may bo preserved by separating thepetals carefully, and to every pound of them rub Inone pound of common salt. The salt absorbs the waterfrom the petals, and rapidly becomes brine. This re¬duces the whole to a pasty mass, which may be storedaway, and will keep uny length of time without thefragrauce being seriously injured. Perfumers are oftenglad to buy the leaves preserved in this way.A gootl rose water may be made by' distilling twelvepounds of pickled roses and two and-a half gallons ofwater. Two gallons are to be drawn off, and the resultwill bo a double distilled rosewater, as sold in tho shops.This can, of course, only be done with; proper apparatusfor distilling.

Verbena perfume is delicious, the following being »simple formula: Rectified spirit, one pint; otto of lemon,grass, 3 drachms; otu of,lemon peel, two ounces; ottoof orange peel, onc-lialf ounce. Lot stanu together for-a few hours, and after filtering is ready for use.A simple lavender perfume may be made ap follows :\Spirit of wine, one pint; otto of French lavender, one-,half ounce; otto of bergamot, one-half ounce; otto ofjcloves, one drachm.
