What are clauses?A clause is a group of words that have a subject and a verb. Independent Clause

Can stand alone as a sentence

Two or more independent clauses put together is called a compound sentence.

You use the 3 ways to correct run-on sentences to put the compound sentence together.

The boy is going to the store

I found a large seashell at the beach

The boys won the basketball game on Friday

Jennifer Lawrence was amazing in the movie American Hustle

What is a Phrase?

Examples of Phrases

• After having eaten

• In answer to your question

• By remaining totally still

A phrase is a group of words used as a sentence part.

A phrase does not have a subject and a verb.

(subject and a predicate)

We will learn about the types of phrases next week!

A conjunction is used to combine two independent clauses with a comma!

Compound Sentences

• Two or more combined independent clauses

• The sentences that are combined should have similar or related subjects.

• DO: I love to watch chick flicks and Chris likes to watch action packed films.

• Don’t: I love to watch chick flicks and Chris likes to go to the mall.

Identify the Clause or Phrase

1. Smashing into the fence

2. Before the first test

3. I despise Alfredo sauce

4. Whenever the bell rings

5. I found a pair of shoes I like

How can we combine Independent Clauses?

She should win an Oscar.

Come up with your own Independent Clauses! On your paper create several pairs of independent clauses. Do not combine them!

For example:

My favorite snack is salsa and chips

Chris loves to eat soft pretzels.

Make Compound Sentences

Now combine your independent clauses to create compound sentences.
