Newsletter of the Watson Community Association Inc. Issue 85 -Autumn 2015
From the Chair: The beginning of another year in Watson. Fifty-one years ago I could not have imagined staying in the same place for so long. As a child I experienced life in different parts of England and Scotland, and attended six schools before I was eight years old. Driving through some of Canberra's newest suburbs I remember what Watson was like way back then. Bare and treeless with skeletons of new houses under construction. Now look at us! Lovely mature trees, green grass, a mixture of old and new homes, a well established school and valued shops. I still enjoy living in this community. The Watzon is a Community Newsletter and in this issue there are interesting items from members of the Watson community as well as the usual reports. Your phone calls, comments, suggestions – and complaints – are welcome as is any help you can provide from time to time. Don't forget 'Art in the Park' and also the AGM in May. Make a note in your diary as there won't be another issue of The Watzon before these events. Autumn is a beautiful time in Canberra, let's all enjoy it. Liz Grace Chair WCA

Youth With a Mission
Youth with a Mission (usually shortened to YWAM and pronounced “why-wam”) is an international and interdenominational mission, housed in the group of red brick buildings (the old Sacred Heart Monastery) skirted by Federal Highway, Zelling St and Aspinall Street (near the Carotel). Check out www.ywam.org . Like most YWAM centres YWAM Canberra runs bible and ministry training of various kinds and has students from all over the world. Some are taking a gap year to have an overseas adventure while doing a 6 month long DTS (Discipleship Training School). In addition to training YWAM operates mercy programs and every Thursday from 10 til 3 we open “The Pantry” which is an outlet for Foodbank and other donated foods. Foodbank is the largest food relief organisation in Australia. Anyone with a short term or ongoing financial need can access a limited range of essential groceries, meat, fruit and vegetables for a small handling fee. The Pantry has also become a place of friendship and belonging where some customers like to hang out and have a cuppa and a chat. YWAM values its involvement with the local community and has recently participated in a few different ways.

We help to deliver the Watzon newsletter in the area around the base, and we have volunteered our time and manpower for Party at the Shops. Having a commercial kitchen and large cool rooms and freezers means we can help out with the catering side of things. Last year we were also pleased to host the Watson Community Association’s AGM in our meeting room. We’re looking forward to more service and involvement in the Watson community.

Plant spring bulbs from the end
of February. Select good
healthy bulbs from your local
garden centre rather than ‘on

you may not get the top quality.
Trim Conifers, especially
conifer hedges in March, but
DO NOT cut into the old wood
as it will not shoot again.
Divide perennials for extra
plants for your garden at no cost

you have too many pot them up

When pruning any trees or
shrubs follow the three ‘D’s’,
removing any Dead, Diseased

Spray fruit trees with organic

Watson Woodlands
Report
Our major tasks through the
summer months are dealing
with St John’s Wort and Paterson’s
Curse as well as tending to new
seedlings planted over spring.
Some seedlings were purchased at the
Greening Australia November sale and
planted in a large rabbit proof enclosure.
Native grasses and forbs raised by John
Briggs were planted in various locations.
We have had favourable conditions for
summer growing plants and their
survival.
Two members of the group met with a
Parks and Conservation (PCS) offsets
manager to consult on a proposed budget
works allocation. PCS has asked for
approximately $109,000 in the
forthcoming 2015 – 2016 ACT budget.
The Woodlands Group would like to
have extra expenditure for slashing,
rabbit control and trial plot burning with
lesser expenditure spent on some other
items. Included are forward planning
estimates for budgets up to 2017-2018.
The main items identified by PCS were
fencing, weeding and funding for a 0.3
full-time equivalent park ranger
position.
Planning Report
The association has provided a comment
to the Environment and Planning
Directorate (EPD) in regard to Block 21
Section 30 in Dickson.
The development application is for a
mixed use residential and Coles/Aldi
supermarket complex extending to sev-
en stories in height facing Antill Street. There is a proposed one way traffic en-
trance from Badham Street with a left
only main exit into Antill Street. There
will be an optional right hand exit at the
Dickson Library to return to eastern
suburbs (including Watson, Downer
and Hackett) via Cowper Street.
This option is mentioned as having the
potential to have an adverse perfor-
mance of the intersections of Cowper
Street and Cowper Street/Antill Street
and the upgrading project for the Cow-
per Street intersection.
However turning right at the library it is
the only sensible option for residents of
Watson to take other than to circumnav-
igate the Dickson Group Centre via
Badham Street and Dickson Place to
return to Cowper Street/Antill Street.
WCA has recommended that
‘sensitivity tests’ be applied to the Cow-
per Street and Cowper/Antill Street in-
tersections.

. GROWING OLD DISGRACEFULLY
Dancing with GOLD in Canberra
In 2011, with the support of an ACT Health Promotion grant, Canberra Dance Theatre began dance classes for people over 55. The class/group soon became known as GOLD—Growing Old Disgracefully. Now a vibrant and dynamic bunch of ‘elders’ ranging in age from their late fifties to those in their seventies and eighties, the group has continued to grow sine 2011, with the majority still attending dance classes at CDT at least once or twice a week. It is a diverse group who above all enjoy movement with music and includes people who have had a lifetime of dance to those with no previous dance experience and those in between.
This amazing diverse group of over 55’s is now recognised as a company under the auspices of CDT and its visionary Artistic Director, Liz lea. The dances have developed a strong and inclusive social network, with a shared commitment not only to keeping active and having fun, but also to dance and performance. They perform in a variety of community settings and national institutions here in Canberra such as the National Gallery of Australia,
Summernats 28 report By Rod Lestone
After 12 years living in Watson I was afforded the opportunity to set foot behind the fence at Summernats 28 as the Watson Community Association representative.
Attending the nightly management meetings I got to hear first hand what goes on in the day to day running and provide feedback as to its impact on our suburb. I found the organisers to be cordial and interested in what I had to say.
The incidents of antisocial behavior, litter and illegal parking were not as apparent as previous Summernats. The decisions to block off access to Stirling Avenue from Northbourne and to close off the gate behind the Woolworths Service Station are positive for Watson. The weather was also kind with a light breeze to dissipate the burnout pollution and noise which in some years is a major issue for Watson residents.
While not everyone’s cup of tea and an outright annoyance to some, as the suburb most impacted it is positive that there is a forum where resident views can be represented and acted upon.

One highlight of 2014 was the production of a 30 minute documentary, The GOLDs, directed by former Canberra dancer and choreographer, now award winning dance filmmaker Sue Healy and produced by Sue Healy and Liz Lea. Another was the involvement of some of the GOLD dancers in the Anthology project – a site specific theatrical journey into the vanished Canberra suburb of Westlake, created and produced by Pip Buining and Louise Morris.
As the promotion for the film attests, the GOLDs are ‘a group of Canberrans who are vital, idiosyncratic and complex individuals, who defy the preconception that dance is only for the young.’ And many of them live in Watson!
To find out more about GOLD and GOLD dance classes, which are always open to new people, contact Canberra Dance Theatre:

On Watson’s doorstep each Saturday morning the Capital Region Farmers Market is held at EPIC, run by the
Rotary Club of Hall. To celebrate 10 years in operation, the Club launched a cookbook on November 1, 2014. We are pleased to be able to bring you a
recipe from this book.

Poetry on the menu….
As part of the Café Poet in Residence
with Australian Poetry, I convened
Watson poets in 2010 at Carlos
Café. We have been meeting every
Wednesday afternoon in the same space
since then (with a break over Christmas-
New Year).
Between six and twelve poets with a
range of poetic styles and experience
come together for two hours, where we
read, respond to and write poems.
Each year, we have a public reading and
tapas, and every second year we travel
by train to Sydney, writing poems to
perform and publish in a chapbook in
partnership with NSW Trains.
New people are welcome to join the
group at Cherryripe. Our next reading
will be at Dickson library in May.

The Peregrination of a Moth
Spawned in the spring equinox The moth emerges from its chrysalis And prayerfully spreads its drying wings Towards the sun, tasting the wind. To the casual observer, its flight Is but a differential thread in space To the participant it is a journey Worthy of Homer or the Quest of Parzival Eventually it will meet its fate Like all creatures of the double helix In a corollary season
