Rotterdam

Population (January 2016) 635.305

Surface area 32.416 hectares

Water 11.529 hectares

Nationalities approx. 170

• Second largest city of the Netherlands

• Beautiful city known for its architecture

• Largest port of Europe and 10th worldwide

• Hands on mentality

• and it is my home town!

Department of Geo-information

• Responsible for all object information of the objects in the public space. • Both the location and the administrative object information

XYZ-coordinates and information like year of construction; object type; age etc

• Necessary lots of processes From urban planning to asset management and more

• Different geo-information products and maps • One of them is the Rotterdam 3D City model

Introduction

Rotterdam 3D

Why 3D a model

Development Rotterdam 3D

Ambitions

The 3D city model is easily accessible and used for linking applications from various fields of work. Rotterdam requires a 3D city model which centralizes the users demands.

What do they want; which information do they need? One model for all kind of usage, same base for different projects

Rich semantics compared to 3D graphics and 3D map formats Objects know WHAT they are and WHERE they are Hierarchical structure of features and their components Required for sophisticated queries, simulations and analyses

Results so far

Rotterdam 3D a digital twin

New building model LoD1 & LoD2

Object oriented and intelligent

Different objects included Buildings LoD1 & 2 – Terrain – Trees (incl. roots) – Lampposts (#types) – Cables and pipelines

Different objects included Buildings LoD1 & 2 – Terrain – Trees (incl. roots) – Lampposts (#types) – Cables and pipelines

Connection between Rotterdam 3D and BIM A lot more research is needed but this works already

Use Rotterdam 3D for GIS analyses Saving potential // Green roof potential // Solar potentional

Visualize sensor data in Rotterdam 3D Parking spots available or not // Groundwater level

Visualise a new situation in Rotterdam 3D See the impact on the surroundings directly

Pilot BRO in Rotterdam 3D See the interaction between objects in the subsurface and object above the ground

Pilot BRO in Rotterdam 3D There are a lot of objects in the subsurface

Participation using 3D City models Gather feedback on a new plan

• Open and accessible is necessary! • Ownership data (especially with sensor data) • ‘Think big, act small’ (think and ACT!) • 25% technique, 75% culture and organisation

Lessons Learned

Development of the 3D city model continues • Feel free to use our data for projects or research

• www.3drotterdam.nl • Feedback on the data

• There is a lot to learn and there are a lot of questions unanswered :

• Master researches • Internships • Traineeships • ….
