Topology requirements

Exchange 2003 requires Active Directory All user & server configuration information is stored in AD Exchange Servers use “Global Catalog” servers to check

addresses Online Outlook clients use Global Catalogs to display address book

Exchange 2003 runs on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 In an Active Directory running on either too Some capabilities only work when in Native Mode Improved scalability & flexibility when on Win2003 in Win2003 AD

Exchange 5.5 Org & Sites no more Routing Groups – used to control mail flow Administrative Groups – used to control permissions on the server One Exchange Org per Active Directory Forest

Ancillary Components

Active Directory Connector Replicates Exchange 5.5 configuration info & user data into AD Must be in place before joining Exchange 2003 into a 5.5 org

Site Replication Services Part of Exchange 2003 which emulates the Exchange 5.5

directory Allows 5.5 servers to interoperate correctly with 2003

Recipient Update Service Ensures that recipient details in the AD match Exchange policy Keeps email addresses etc up to date

Switch to “Native Mode” Exchange 2003 changes things Enables some additional functionality & flexibility One-way operation – i.e. no 5.5 Servers can be introduced later

Trends in Exchange deployment

Site consolidation now commonClustering, server scalability, pervasive

reliable bandwidth and cached mode make it possible

SAN technology used to deliver I/O and share storage for clusters

Tape backup no longer #1Restore times typically restrict database

sizesPrimary backup to disk common (incl

Snapshot), tape for archival

Remote Access very importantUsers need to be mobile

Monitoring Exchange with MOM 2005Exchange Management Pack - Goals

Questions AnsweredAvailability Are all Exchange services up? Are all databases mounted? Is sufficient disk space available? Can Outlook 2003 clients connect? Can users connect via MAPI? POP? IMAP? HTTP?

Performance Is Outlook 2003 client performance good? Is mail flowing between servers? Is Exchange performing well & reliably?

Configuration & Security Is Exchange configured correctly & secure?

Directory Synchronization Active Directory Considerations

What is the ADC for ?Replication of objects between Exchange

Directory and the Active Directory

What does it do ?If it finds a matching object, it keeps both

in syncIf it doesn’t find a matching object, it

creates a placeholder in the directory
