THE ART AND SCIENCE OF STUDENT SUCCESSUSING DATA SCIENCE AND DESIGN THINKING TO HELP

STUDENTS LEARN WELL AND FINISH STRONG

“The ability to

learn faster than

your competitors

may be the only

sustainable

competitive

advantage.”

35 MILLION AMERICANS HAVE SOME COLLEGE BUT NO CREDENTIALTheir stories are captured in the diverse data footprints left

behind in the institutions through which they travel. If we pull

these footprints together—coupled with the stories of those who

succeed—we can tell a coherent story of striving-student

learning journeys. More important, we can improve their

likelihood of successfully completing the journey!

Let’s Turn On the Lights!

PRODUCTIVE TRANSFER BUMP

Hypothesis: We believe that students

who transfer into our college with

credits from another institution are

more likely to persist than students

who have no transfer credits.

The Data Says: True, but only if the

student is transferring at least 40 and

ideally 60 credits. Students with less than

40 credits have a substantial risk of non-

persistence.

Momentum PointTipping Point

SAM: I wanted to ask you about transferring out now that I’ve finished two semesters here. I think I’m ready.

ADVISOR : I understand…but did you know students transferring to the University are 65% more likely to earn their Bachelor’s degree if they stay here and complete their Associate degree first, and then transfer?

SAM: Wow. I didn’t know that. So, maybe I should stay?.

ADVISOR: Yes, I think so.. Also, the University wants to encourage this so they offer our transfer students with a completed Associate degree a two semester scholarship. You will qualify for that when you finish your associates

SAM: Awesome, that will really help.

ADVISOR: Let me email you additional information and the documents you need to complete so that you have them when you are ready to transfer.

Students who transfer in with 60 or more credits (Associates Degree) are more likely to be successful

Yellow Flag Signal Students who earn “C” in an early term courses tend to persist but not graduate when compared to other courses taken in the same year.

In this English Composition

and Rhetoric Course,

students that receive a C are

94.4% likely to persist, but

are only 52% likely to

graduate, compared to an

average graduation rate of

70%.

The graduation rate of

students with a grade better

than a C is 80%

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the university. Congratulations again on your scholarship! We’re so happy to have you as a student. It was great meeting you at our advising session last week.

Did you know our most successful students – the real rock stars here – visit the Writing Center an average of 6 times the first semester of their junior year. Let’s make sure you’re a rock star too! I can arrange for you to meet up with another student to show you around the center. Let’s talk.

Matt Champion, Advisor

The Writing Center

Hi Sam…wanted to let you

know that the Writing

Center is a big part of doing

well in your major. Students

who go to the Writing

Center at least twice during

their first semester greatly

improve their chance of

graduation. It’s not just for

students who are taking

writing courses. The

Writing Center is located in

Goodall Hall Room 223.

There is a meet-up at the

Writing Center for new

students at 7pm on Thursday.

Can you commit to going?

Maybe

Would you like a reminder on

Wednesday?

Yes

Hi Sam – Here is your

reminder that there is a

meet-up tomorrow at 7pm

for new students at the

Writing Center. 10 new

students are planning to

attend. Are you in?
