By connecting a diverse community of donors with successive generations of college students, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation brings together a varied network of individuals dedicated to the Island University. Whether the benefactors are graduates expressing their pride in their alma mater,

private donors interested in enhancing the social and cultural enrichment of the Coastal Bend, individuals motivated to help students in financial need, or patrons who champion specific

University programs, all are committed to improving the educational experience for both current students and for those coming in the years and decades to follow.

The many gifts to the Foundation over the years have provided vital scholarship support, resources to expand academic programs and funds for the construction of first-class facilities. Today, with financial assistance from Foundation donors, faculty members participate in cutting-edge academic and scientific research, and students are becoming leaders in a wide array of professions. The gifts from past, current and future donors to the Foundation will also provide indispensible financial support to tomorrow’s teachers and students to help them build on the foundation of excellence they inherit from their predecessors.

The ability to provide significant financial support to future generations of University beneficiaries requires that the Foundation’s endowments earn long term investment returns in excess of annual distributions to current beneficiaries, plus inflation. This, in turn,

requires the Foundation to allocate a portion of its investment capital to asset classes that are expected to grow with the global economy over long time horizons, including allocations to mutual funds that invest in common stocks. Because the value of these investments at any point in time depends on the current state of the national and global economies, the value of the Foundation’s investment portfolio fluctuates with variations in the financial markets and in the global economy.

The recent global financial crisis and the world wide recession that followed caused a decrease in value of the Foundation’s assets as of the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2009, when compared to the prior year. However, from March, 2009 through December, 2009, global equity markets made a significant recovery, and the value of the Foundation’s investment portfolio since March of 2009 has increased accordingly. Assisted by our investment advisors, we regularly monitor our asset allocation, assess investment performance and review our investment and distribution policies to keep focused on our goal of balancing the needs of the current generation with those of generations to come.

Since opening its doors more than 60 years ago, the Island University has been transformed from a small college with a narrow focus into a major institution of higher learning with five colleges and prestigious institutes that are conducting groundbreaking research in a variety of fields.

Building Momentum

This didn’t just happen. The beautiful campus and top-notch facilities enjoyed by our students today are a testimonial to the foresight of people who understand the critical link between an educated workforce and a thriving community, both economically and culturally. Every year, universities are being confronted with declining levels of state support at a time when the costs of providing a quality education are escalating. As a college education becomes increasingly essential for today’s students, pursuing that goal is creating financial

burdens on them and their families, making private giving more critical than ever. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has been fortunate over the years in having a loyal base of private donors who clearly understand the power of education to transform lives and communities. Many have stepped forward to make substantial commitments that have allowed us to build state-of-the-art facilities, offer significant scholarships to deserving students and to attract the outstanding faculty who are the foundation of our academic success. Recently, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi launched the Momentum Campaign that will allow us to fund several key objectives essential to continued growth and excellence. The campaign seeks to establish merit-based scholarship funds that will allow the University to

compete for the best and brightest students. To do this, we must also hire and retain brilliant faculty who can truly make a difference in the lives of the next generation. Additional funding is necessary to expand and strengthen our programs, especially in the areas of greatest economic growth, such as marine and coastal science, engineering, and the health sciences. In addition, raising money for bricks and mortar is important for our long-range plans to expand our facilities on the land given to the University by the people of Corpus Christi. This gift of 137 acres just minutes from campus makes it possible to move some non-academic operations to the new site, ensuring room for additional classroom and laboratory facilities on campus. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is poised to take its commitment to excellence, engagement and expansion to an even higher level. With the support of our many friends and benefactors, we will build on the greatness we have achieved and pave the way for an even brighter future.

Dusty Durrill

In 1957, William “Dusty” Durrill received his Navy Wings of Gold and married his bride “Sam” in Corpus Christi. After his naval duties in the fleet were finished, they moved back to Corpus Christi. Some 20 years ago his friend and accountant, the late John Buckley, began discussing with Dusty about the great things happening at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

“I remember telling John that we had a university with great potential but nobody knows it’s here,” Dusty says. “I felt that the University needed a campus entrance that people could identify with and remember. There was no uniqueness, building or sign that indicated this was the location of a nationally recognized four year university.”

Dusty was at social gathering when he met then University President Robert Furgason, and told “Bob” that the University was getting good press, but was invisible to visitors as it had no identity from the street. It needed a proper entrance! They

had meetings and a contest to get suggestions and proposals for a new entrance image for the University. The results failed to stimulate anyone so Dusty located a sculptor, Robert Roesch, in Philadelphia, Pa. The result became “Momentum,” the sculpture that now announces the campus to the public. The sculpture is the largest sculpture on any university in the United States and proudly announces that this is Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The sculpture became the symbol for “Momentum 2015,” the 10-year plan initiated by current University President Flavius Killebrew in 2005 to establish the facility as the Flagship University for

South Texas. Then in October 2008, the “Momentum” sculpture became the official logo of the Island University.

Dusty felt the campus should continue creating more personal ambience. He obtained the permission of the University to build and locate 12 different Palapas (eight, open-sided, Amish gazebo structures) where students can study or relax between classes, giving the campus more of an island atmosphere. He has created “Sam’s Place” in memory of his bride with three huge, interconnected structures encircling two adjacent ponds, waterfall, statues and benches with electrical outlets so students can gather, socialize, study, and create memories. Dusty is additionally placing two units next to the beach, one unit overlooking Chapman Field, and six units along the hike and bike trail, to be called the Camino de Palapas.

“A university is the heartbeat of any city,” Dusty says. “It is unbelievable what a major university can do for a city when it comes to economic development and generating jobs. It’s critical to be able to train and adapt a workforce as Corpus Christi moves from being a blue-collar to a high tech city. An investment in the University is an investment in the future of Corpus Christi.”

Dr. Greg Stunz

Dr. Greg Stunz is on a mission to ensure an abundance of healthy fish populations in the Gulf of Mexico for generations to come.

Sustainable Fisheries for Future Generations

sustainable fisheries through numerous studies such as improving red snapper populations, tracking sharks by satellite, and using acoustic telemetry to determine the migration patterns of spotted seatrout.

Each year, the sports-fishing industry pumps almost $2 billion into Texas’ coastal economy. Stunz’s research is important to finding ways to maintain plentiful populations of red snapper, the Gulf’s most economically important fish.

“Sometimes fish are removed so rapidly that they aren’t allowed to be replenished,” says Stunz. “We want to prevent that from happening.”

To answer important scientific and management questions, Stunz and his students are installing tag implants in sharks, red snapper, red drum, and spotted seatrout to monitor their temperature, depth, location and movement patterns. The tagged

sharks can be tracked from anywhere in the world with information communicated back to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi through satellites. Recently, Stunz and his researchers installed an acoustic network throughout the waters extending from the Lower Laguna Madre to Aransas Bay to track fish movement along the Coastal Bend.

“People travel from all over the world to fish for sharks at the Padre Island National Seashore, the world’s largest land-based fishery for sharks,” says Stunz. “Oceanic and coastal shark populations worldwide continue to decline despite the federal mandatesto end overfishing.”

Low shark populations, he says, could result in the overpopulation of stingrays, which consume shellfish and potentially prevent their restoration.

“The loss of these fish can have cascading impacts throughout our marine ecosystem,” Stunz says. “Everything is linked. You can’t remove one piece of the ecosystem because you often see unintended consequences.”

In addition, his studies provide vital information on reef, wetland and sea grass habitats. Sea grasses play an important role in the function and structure of coastal ecosystems and are home to a variety of marine organisms.

Stunz, recipient of the 2008 Coastal Bend Bays Foundation’s Conservation and Environmental Stewardship Award in Higher Education, leads the University’s new Marine Biology Doctoral Program. In seven years, Stunz, who also directs the Ocean Health program, has secured approximately $6 million in research grants centered on understanding sport-fish populations, the role of habitat to support marine populations, and ocean health.

“Marine science is a rapidly-growing field, but much more research will be required to protect and maintain our renewable resources,” Stunz says. “Grants to fund more research and increase the ability to produce scientists are key to meeting the challenges of pollution and overfishing of the world’s oceans.”

Sustainable Fisheries for Future Generations

Lauren Loveless owes her enduring work ethic to her grandparents.

After her mother moved away, the couple opened their home to Lauren so she could graduate with her friends in the class of 2007 at Gregory-Portland High School. Although both grandparents are in their 70s, her grandfather works fulltime as a custodian and her

grandmother is a ministry assistant at an area church. It was their example that steeled her determination to earn a college degree in the shortest possible time so that she could pursue a fast-paced career as a marketing manager.

“They are my source of inspiration,” says Lauren, who in December earned a bachelor’s degree from the Island University. “My grandparents have provided me with the love and support I needed to make it this far and to be successful.”

Two-and-a-half years after entering the University, Lauren, 21, has graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and has already passed the GMAT. While still a senior, she got a running start on her master’s degree, taking post-graduate classes in addition to her regular workload. And, she has enrolled in the University’s MBA program for spring 2010.

“My attitude is if I’m going to do something, I’m going to go all out,” says Lauren. “I have all this energy, so it is in my best interest to get my master’s degree. I’m keeping my eye on the prize.”

Maintaining a close connection with her grandparents was one of the reasons Lauren chose the Island University. Other factors in her decision included scholarship opportunities and the quality of the University’s marketing and management programs.

Lauren, a member of the Honor Student Association who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average, has earned several scholarships which have paid her entire tuition. At anearly age, Lauren, knew that she would be responsible for paying for college, so she never missed an opportunity to apply for scholarships or write an essay if it could earn her money for school.

In addition to a top-notch education, Lauren has been building her resume with invaluable work experience. Recently, she was a marketing assistant for RE/Max Metro Properties where she was in charge of open houses, promotions and marketing. She also worked as an office assistant for the University’s First-Year Learning Communities Program and as an assistant for the City of Portland’s senior citizen’s center.

Lauren prides herself on working best under pressure. By prioritizing her tasks, she has been able to take between 18 and 21 hours each semester which allowed her to graduate early and take on the next challenge.

“Grades are a reflection of the hard work you put into your classes,” Lauren says. “When I see my grades at the end of the semester, I feel rewarded and it reinforces me to keep on going.”
