TheTechnionSculptureTrailprovidesstudents,faculty,staff,andvisitorswithaconstantopportunitytointerfacedailywithart.Arttranscendsthelimitsofthepresenttothepossibilitiesoftheunknown;itinspiresresearcherstoinnovate–indeed,thebasisofalltechnologicaladvanceisanexpressionofcreativity,combiningintellectandcuriosity.

ThelateProf.JosefSingerinitiatedtheSculpturePathsprojectin1985duringhistenureasTechnionpresident(1982-1986).Twoearlierpieceswereerectedoncampus[Reclining Woman,c.1956byanunknownartistandZviAldouby’sBreastplate of the High Priest (HaChoshen),1975].MajorIsraeliartistswereapproachedtocontributetheirwork.Prof.Singercontinuedthisimpetusandnegotiatedtheacquisitionofsculptureslongafterhistermofoffice.PieceswhichresultedfromhisinitiativeincludeAll Directions,YaacovAgam;Composition in Stainless Steel #14,GideonGraetz;Garden Organ,MichaelGross;Syllables 6,

Later,amovewasmadetorecognizemajorcampuswidemultidisciplinaryprojectswithtangibleoutdoorsculpturesincludingDrSantiagoCalatrava’smonumentalkineticObeliskacknowledgingthegiftoftheRussellBerrieFoundationtotheestablishmentoftheRussellBerrieNanotechnologyInstitute,andYaëlArtsi’ssteelandstonesculptureVision,intributetothenamingoftheIrwinandJoanJacobsGraduateSchool.

Similarly,independentcommissionsbyTechnionfriendsandfacultyresultedinsculpturesondisplayfortheenjoymentofall,includingA Man and a Cat Called Yitz,byRobertShure-agiftofRobert(DrBob)Shillman.

TheartistIdoAgam(b.IdoElgavish)wasborninIsrael.HecreatedtwopiecesforTechnion’sSculptureTrail,atthetopandlowerentrancestotheFacultyofMaterialsEngineering.

Thelargerofthetwo,Dynamic Static,isreminiscentofasinewave.Thesecondinstallation,Images,locatedatthelowerentrance,isacollectionofsilhouettes–someabstractandsomeofanimals–placedonapatio.Bothsculpturesarealuminum,donatedbytheAlubinaluminumcompany.

TheinternationallyacclaimedartistYaacovAgam(b.YaacovGipstein)wasbornthesonofarabbiinRishonLeZion,EretzIsrael.Heisoneofthepioneersofthekineticmovementinartaswellasitsmostoutstandingcontemporaryrepresentative.AgamtrainedattheBezalelAcademyofArtinJerusalem,andinSwitzerlandattheEidgenossischeTechnischeHochschuleandZurichUniversity.HerelocatedtoParisduringthe1950s.

Agamexperimentspassionatelywiththe4thdimension,simultaneityandtimeinthevisual,plasticarts,withviewerparticipationandfrequentuseoflightandsound.Agam’screationsareiconiclandmarksinTelAvivandJerusalem.In1996,AgamwasawardedUNESCO’sComeniusMedalfortheAgamMethod,whichfocusesonstimulatingvisualtalentsinyoungchildrenasameanstoimproveover-allcognitivedevelopment.InAll Directions,nineuprightstainlesssteellimbsmovefreelyontheiraxis,anchoredonarectangularbase.

ThesculptorZviYehudaAldoubywasborntoaHassidicfamilyinCarpathianGalicia,andimmigratedtoEretzIsraelin1924.HestudiedinJerusalem,followedbyastudytourofItalyandParis.Hissculptureisfigurativeinstyle.AldoubywasamongthefoundersofEinHodArtists’VillageontheCarmel.Aldoubydescribedthechallengeforhiscreation,theBreastplate of the High Priest (HaChoshen),fortheOhelAharonSynagogueatTechnion(April1975).

“Iwasinspiredbythebeautyandsplendorofthe…breastplatewhichthehighpriestworeoverhisheart…adornedwith12preciousstones,eachonedifferent,symbolizingthe12tribesofIsrael…Inourowntimes,thebreastplateofthehighpriestmightserveasasymbolandahopefortheunificationoftheJewslivinginIsraelandfortheunityoftheJewishpeopleeverywhere.”

ThesculptureisamassiverectangleofflatHebronstone,asymmetricalandrough.Protrudingfromthetwoparallelsurfacesaretwelvebronzerectanglesarrangedinfourrows,setintothestonewithconcrete.Eachbronzerectangleappearstobethecontinuationoftheopposingoneontheotherside.Thefaceofeachbronzerectanglehasanaturalroughnesswithadifferentfinishineachcase.

YaëlArtsiwasborninMoroccoandimmigratedtoIsraelaged21.ShestudiedattheAvniInstituteofArtandDesigninTelAviv,andinPariswiththefamoussculptorEtienneMartinandatColaMarini’sstudio.ShegraduatedtheAcademydesBeaux-Arts,Paris,in1975.Yaëlcreatesbothhugemonumentalobjectsaswellassmaller,intimatepieces.ChildhoodinfluencesfromhernativeMoroccoofteninfiltratehersculptures.

Artsiusesmaterialssuchasstone,basalt(e.g.YitzhakRabinmemorialincityhall,TelAviv),granite,metal,andwood.ShecuratesandorganizestheInternationalSculpturePeaceGardeninIsraelandDenmark.HeroutdoormonumentalsculpturescanbefoundthroughoutIsrael,andinternationallyinTheNetherlands,Poland,Geneva,Osaka,SpainandBuenosAires.ArtsilivesonKibbutzSdot-Yam.

Visioncomprisestwoelements:Ametalbirdsoaringfroma12-tonmassofnaturalbasaltrock.Asthesculptureisbuiltfromlatticedstainlesssteelbars,itdoesnotobscuretheviewandmergeswiththeenvironment.Thebasaltstonesymbolizestheancient,astartingpoint,andflightsymbolizesthefirstconditionfortheevolutionofscience.

The sculpture was commissioned in tribute to Dr Irwin and Joan Jacobs on the naming of the Graduate School.

TheenvironmentalartistwantspeopletounderstandtherelationshipbetweenNatureandScience.Therefore,theimageryofthesculptureisborrowedfromtheKingdomofFloraasametaphorforthecreationprocessof“scientificdiscovery”attheTechnion:itbeginswithanidea,becomesgroundedinabase,continuestodevelop,andresultsinabreakthrough.HavaandOrit,bothgraduatesofTechnion,establishedBarkanElhaianyLandscapeArchitectureinHaifa.

Theinstallationcomprisesstainless-steelstemstoppedbybuds.Thedesiretoexpressperpetualrenewalandregenerationthroughtheillusionofmovementcreatesaninspirationalworkthatisincompleteharmonywithitsenvironment.

Thesculptor,architect,andengineer,DrSantiagoCalatrava,wasbornnearValencia,Spain.Hisextensivetraining—includingaPhDinCivilEngineering—makeshimoneofthemostinterestingarchitectstoday,earningworldwidefameforseveralsensationalandinnovativearchitecturalprojects.Calatravauseshisskillsasasculptortocreateuniquebuildings,combiningthefreeformsofartwithstrictgeometryandmodernmaterialstotranscendtraditionallimits.HereceivedanHonoraryDoctorateofSciencefromTechnionin2004,wherehealsoholdstheappointmentofDistinguishedVisitingProfessor.

TheObeliskcomprisesastonepedestalcrownedwitha25-meterglintingtower,illuminatedbylightssunkinthecirculardolomitepavement.Thetowerhousesanexternalskinof224movingstainless-steelribs,arrangedineightlevels,designedtopermitawave-likemotiongeneratedbytheelectricmotorthatsitsatopthemast.Eachmovingribinducesthesequentialmotionofthenext,creatinganillusionofthewholemonumentrotatingonitsaxis;actually,themovementislikethehumanribcagemovinginandoutduringthebreathingprocess.Theentirestructurestandsmorethan28mhigh,over200mabovesea-level.

This kinetic construction recognizes the contribution to Technion by the Russell Berrie Foundation in establishing the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute.

ArchitectJoshuaEinsteinwasborninNewYork.HeservedintheIsraelDefenseForces,andworkedasafarmwelderonakibbutz.ShukistudiedArchitectureandUrbanPlanningattheTechnion,graduatingin1991.Whileattendingadesignclassinhisfinalyearandmakingthetransitionfromacademicarchitecturetotherealworld,Einsteingottheideatocreateafullinstallationfrommakingafewsketches.Thespatialcomposition,comprisingwood,steel,gravelandthesite,isinstalledintheplazaatthelowerentrancetotheFacultyofArchitectureandTownPlanning.Einsteincreatedthesculptureoverseveralweeksandhadhisfellowstudentshelpinstallit.ShukiEinsteinisanexecutiveboardmemberforArchitectsWithoutBorders-Oregon.

Hisinspirationforthisinstallationinvolves“…anelementofuplifting,takingagedrailwaytiesthattypicallylieintheground...creatingspacesbetweentherailsandinterestingshadowsatdifferenttimesduringtheday.Thereisadeliberatefocusonminimalism,ofmaterialswithasimpleorderinspaceandacontrastofoldandnewmaterials.Theframeofmetalwithgravelcreatesthegroundingelementandconnectsittotheexistingsquareandcampus.”

SculptorGideonGraetzwasborninTelAviv.DuringIsrael’sWarofIndependence,heservedinthePalmach.Inthe1950s,GraetzattendedtheAccademiadellaBelleArtiinFlorenceandtheEcoledesBeaux-ArtsinParis.SincemovingtoFiesole,Italy,wherehehasastudioandfoundry,GraetzhasexhibitedhisworkinEurope,AustraliaandtheUnitedStates.ThepublicspacesofFlorencebecamethesettingforhissculptureinthe1998show,“Scultureincitta.”HisotherpublicsculptureislocatedinEurope,theUnitedStatesandIsrael.

Thefirstoftheseries—Composition in Stainless Steel #1—isdisplayedattheSculptureGardensatPepsiCoWorldHeadquartersinPurchase,NewYork.ThepieceComposition in Stainless Steel #14 comprisestwoflame-likearmsstandingonacylindricalbase.ItisonpermanentloantotheTechnionbytheartist,inmemoryofhislatefatherHeinzR.Graetz,“whowasoneofthepioneersofIsraelinavigationandwhocherishedtheStateofIsraelandlaboredsogreatlyonitsbehalf.”

ThesculptorandpainterMichaelGrosswasborninTiberias,andspenthischildhoodinMigdal,neartheshoresoftheSeaofGalilee.HestudiedinJerusalem,andarchitectureatTechnion(1943-1945).HesubsequentlystudiedsculptureandpaintingwithMosheZiffer,MenachemShemi,andotherartists;andatEcoledesBeaux-Arts,Paris,withMichelGimond.

Hisoeuvrecombinesdifferentcreativetechniquesandmaterials,suchaswhiteconcreteandlaterpaintingsweresupplementedbythetexturesofobjectssuchaswoodenbeams,burlapandrope.Gross’consistentuseofsoftpastelcoloring–asinthepastelyellowGarden Organ –suggestsadirectlinkwiththeIsraelilandscape.Grosswasawardedthe2000IsraelPrize.HisenvironmentalsculpturesareondisplayatsitesacrossIsraelandaroundtheworld.

Tree of KnowledgeProf.JoshZeevicommissionedAsafLifshitztocommemorate60yearsoftheFacultyofElectricalEngineering.Lifshitzwasinspiredbyahugeeucalyptustreenearthekibbutzcarpentryfacility,which,despitebeingsubjecttostrongwesterlywinds,retainedanuprighttrunk.Nearby,workers’footprintscoveredthegaragefloorwithoilstains,whichremindedtheartistoffallenleaves,and,byassociation,anescape–perhapsfromthewind.InTree of Knowledge,Lifshitzsubstitutedthesefootprintswithprintedcircuitswhichhehungonthebranchesinlieuofleaves.Gift of Zohar and Yehuda Zisapel, alumni

AndrewRogerswasbornandlivesinMelbourne,Australia.Rogers,oneofAustralia’smostdistinguishedandinternationallyrecognizedcontemporarysculptors,strivestorepresenttheconnectionbetweenman,natureandlandscape.Formerlyapainter,Rogersmadehisfirstsculpturein1988wheninhisearlyforties.Rogers’firstworkswerefigurative,andin1995,hemovedtowardsabstractionasameansofcommunication.

RogersisknownforhismonumentalglobalGeoglyphsprojectwhichhecommencedinIsrael’sAravadesert.Theseaccessibleandlife-affirmingmassivestonesculpturesintheRythms of Lifeserieshavesincebeenconstructedallovertheworld.

Rogerswasartist-in-residenceattheTechnionin1998whenhecreatedTransform,whichstandsataheightof3.8m.Thisbronzesculpture,castatalocalfoundry,isaliteralrepresentationoftheboundlesscreativitythatdrivestechnologicalandscientificprogress.Spiralingupward,swirlingorganicrootsgiverisetoformsthatspeaktotheprecisionofthetechnologicalinnovationthatpropelledusintothe21stCentury.Thisstructuremarksthefirsttimeanartist-in-residencehasinvitedandwelcomedtheparticipationofstudentsinthecreationofacampussculpture.

Painter,sculptor,andenvironmentaldesignerAvivaShemerwasborninHaifa,whereshecontinuestoliveandwork.ShehasexhibitedinsoloshowsatnumerousvenuesthroughoutIsrael,inGermany,HongKong,Poland,andtheUSA,andlikewisehasparticipatedingroupexhibitionsacrosstheworld.Aviva’spermanentenvironmentaldesignsaredisplayedatmultiplelocationsinHaifaandelsewhereinIsrael.

ManyofhersculptureshaveJewishorspiritualmotifs.ThesteelsculpturePeacewascreatedin1997,anddonatedbytheartisttotheTechnion.Itispartofagroupofsculpturesthatsharetheletter“Shin”–thefirstletterofShalom(Peace).

PainterandsculptorYehielShemiwasborninHaifa.HemadehisfirstwoodandstonesculpturesatKibbutzBeit-Ha’aravaintheNegev,whichhejoinedin1939asaconstructionworker.ShemihelpedfoundKibbutzKabriinWesternGalilee,wherehewasamemberfrom1949untilhisdeath;hisstudioandaSculptureGardenofhisworkareopentothepublic.HeproducedhisfirstmetalweldedsculpturesfromthesteelfoundinsunkenshipsinHaifaharbor.

Sculptor,painter,andstagedesignerIgaelTumarkinwasborninDresden,Germany,andimmigratedtoEretzIsraelin1935.HestudiedwithRudiLehmann,amajorpioneeroftheCanaaniteesthetic.HereceivedtheIsraelPrizeinSculpturein2004,andlivesinTelAviv-Jaffa.

ThecompositestructureChichén Itzá Blueconsistsofalargeringsetonafour-wheeledwagon,preventedfrommovingalongitsrailsbyobstacles.ChichénItzá isaMayanarchaeologicalsiteinMexico,withagreatTlatchliballcourt.Resemblingmodernbasketball,thispostclassicgame(c.900AD)wasplayedbytwoteamswho,withoutusingtheirhands,triedtopassasolidrubberballthroughtheiropponents’stonering,setverticallyinthesidewalls.ThefinishedritualisticgameofTlatchliinvolvedhumansacrifice.TumarkinwasapparentlyinspiredthatwhilethepeopleofChichénItzá werecapableofmakingwheel-shapesfortheballgame,theyneverappliedthisskillfortransportation.TheindigenouspopulationwaslatereasilydefeatedbyasmallnumberoftechnologicallysavvyEuropeans.Chichén Itzá Blue isbothamemorialtotheMayancultureandatributetoourgreatertechnologicalknow-how.Tumarkin,whoissensitivetoallkindsofsocialviolenceandinjustice,makesastatementaboutthedominationofonepeopleoveranother.

ThislimestonesculptureofarecliningwomanisidentifiedwithElectra,acharacterinGreekmythology.InGreek,Electrameans“shining”or“bright”andisderivedfromthewordfor“amber”.

Thispieceofunknownoriginisthefirstsculptureerectedoncampusinc.1956,neartheentrancetotheFischbachbuildingwhichhousedtheFacultyofElectricalEngineering.Electricityisafundamentalformofenergyobservableinpositiveandnegativeformsthatcanoccurnaturally(asinlightning).Therecliningwomanofthestatue,leaningonherrightarm,originallyheldlightning—thesymbolforelectricity—inherbrokenlefthand,whichrestsonherknee.Originallynaked,thecontoursofherclotheswereaddedsubsequently–seeminglytoobscurehernudity.

BorisZaborovwasborninMinsk,Belarus.HestudiedartinMinsk,StPetersburg,andMoscow,andhasbeenlivinginParissince1980wherehenowworks.Hisearlywork,beforehisdeparturefromtheSovietUnion,includesbookillustration,notablyOscarWilde’sFairy Tales.SuchbooksreflectnotonlyhistalentbutalsohissenseoftheWord.

Zaborovsaysthathisbronzeandplatinumsculpture,Books and the Written Word,“isafittingmonumenttotheimportanceofthebooktoJews–thePeopleoftheBook.”Itdepictsabook–theheightofhumancivilization,nowsocommonlymass-producedinpocketform–fromwhichlettersinvariousalphabetsemerge.Thehugesculpturestands2.8mhigh,weighingaroundfourtons,andissituatedonaconcretebaseaccordingtoarchitectsShaulKaner’sandMichaelSeltser’sspecifications.
