   Position  Vacant:  Assistant  Director,  Student  Development    

   About  The  Beijing  Center  Since  1998,  The  Beijing  Center  for  Chinese  Studies  (TBC)  has  offered  outstanding  immersive  semester  abroad  programs  and  tailored  short-­‐term  programs  to  students  from  around  the  world.    Our  mission  is  to  promote  mutual  understanding  between  China  and  other  cultures.  What  makes  TBC  unique   is   its  placement   in   a   long   and   storied   tradition   of   Jesuit   education.   TBC   achieves   its  mission   by   offering  students   a   supportive   and   immersive   global   environment   combined   with   a   rigorous   academic  curriculum.   TBC   students   come   from   all   over   the   world   while   most   students   are   from   US  colleges/universities.      Role  TBC’s  Office  of  Student  Development  seeks  a  student  affairs/services  professional  to  provide  support  to   all   aspects   of   the   Office’s   initiatives   and   services.   You   will   be   expected   to   work   closely   with  colleagues   to  assist   in   the   implementation  of  a  departmental   strategy.  Responsibilities   include   fiscal  management,   co-­‐curricular  engagement,   immersion,  volunteer  and   service   learning  efforts,  housing,  management   and   maintenance   of   physical   space   and   technology,   emergency   preparedness   and  response,  behavior  management,   visa  procedures,   student   arrivals   and  departures,  development  of  the  Chinese  Roommate  and  Host  Family  programs,  orientation  and  reentry  efforts,  and  assisting  in  the  coordination  of  student  development  functions  of  the  two  annual  academic  excursions.    The  Assistant  Director  of  Student  Development  serves  as  the  primary  liaison  to  School  of  International  Education  at  TBC’s  host  institution,  the  University  of  International  Business  and  Economics  (UIBE).    You  will  be  well  versed   in  the  skills  needed  to  work  successfully   in  a  multi-­‐national  and  multi-­‐cultural  environment   and   are  native  Chinese  OR  have  extensive   (3+   years)  experience  working   and   living   in  China.  You  will  have  a  passion  for  and  dedication  to  higher  education,  including,  ideally,  previous  work  experience   in   international   education.   You  will   enjoy  working   collaboratively   and   supportively  with  students,  and  will  have  a  commitment   to  educating  and  developing  young  adults.  You  will  have   the  ability  to  support  existing  programs.    Further,  you  will  have  a  high  emotional  intelligence,  bringing  self-­‐awareness  to  your  role  to  be  an  effective  student  development  educator.    Responsibilities  The   Assistant   Director   will   report   to   the   Associate   Director   of   Student   Development   and   will   have  primary  responsibility  for  the  following:  • Promoting   the   health,   safety,   and   welfare   of   TBC   students.   This   includes   handling   emergencies,  

planning   and   providing   educational   programming   for   students,   facilitating   a   strong   sense   of  community,  and  promoting  the  character  development  of  students.      • Advising   and   providing   students   with   general   resources   related   to   academic,   financial,   personal  

health/wellness,  and  cultural  adjustment  concerns.  • Assisting  in  both  the  acculturation  and  repatriation  of  students  through  a  multi-­‐day  on-­‐site  arrival  

orientation  and  re-­‐entry  orientation  prior  to  departure.  

• Overseeing   student   registration   logistics   at   the   host   university   to   ensure   students’   timely   receipt  and  usage  of  student  IDs,  meal  cards  and  WIFI  accounts,  etc.  • Managing   and   responding   to   student   emergencies   through   participation   in   the   24-­‐hour   duty  

rotation.  • Participating   in   the   semesterly,   two-­‐week   student   excursion,   fulfilling   all   student   development  

functions  and  responsibilities.  • Implementing   a   comprehensive   co-­‐curricular   programming  model   incorporating   best   practices   to  

meet  departmental  programming  objectives.  • Planning   and   implementing   on-­‐campus   housing   solutions   for   semester   students   in   coordination  

with  the  UIBE  building  management  team,  including  year-­‐round  room  booking,  cost  forecasting  and  reconciliation,  rooming  assignments,  roommate  matching,  check-­‐in  and  check-­‐out  facilitation,  etc..  • Managing  homestay  program  overseeing  recruitment,  retention  and  compensation  of  host  families  

as  well  as  placement,  check-­‐in/check-­‐out  and  trouble-­‐shooting  for  students  in  homestays.  • Managing   the   recruitment,   training,  development,  and  oversight  of  both   the  Chinese  Roommates  

and  Chinese  Tutor  programs.  

• Managing  the  hiring,  training,  and  supervision  of  department  interns.  • Providing  budgetary  management  of  the  department’s  expenditures.  • Overseeing  all  aspects  of  students’  visa  process  in  collaboration  with  the  recruitment  team  and  the  

host  university.  • Maintaining  accurate  student  records  in  compliance  with  US  legislation.  • Promoting  diversity  and  inclusion  in  all  departmental  practices  and  programming.  • Working  closely  with  the  other  TBC  staff  on  location  (academic  affairs;  marketing,  communications,  

and  recruitment;  short-­‐term  programs)  and  with  colleagues  based  in  the  US.  • Assisting  TBC  colleagues  with  event  management  as  required.  • Assisting   TBC   leadership   team   to   liaise   with   UIBE   on   partnership   development,   program  

development  and  general  cooperation.    • Completing  special  projects  as  assigned.    This  position  is  a  live-­‐on  position  that  requires  availability  onsite  every  day  and  on-­‐call  availability  when  offsite.  Time  off  is  coordinated  with  other  team  members  so  that  at  least  one  full-­‐time  Student  Development  staff  person  is  always  available  onsite  and/or  on-­‐call  for  the  safety  and  welfare  of  the  students,  including  on  weekends.    Selection  criteria    Essential:  • Bachelor’s  Degree  required  • One  or  more  years  of  experience  in  student  services/affairs,  education  program  management,  or  a  

closely  related  field  • Proven  ability  to  work  well  with  a  diverse  student  body  including  exceptional  cultural  competence,  

counseling,  and  advising  skills,  and  sensitivity  to  diverse  cultures  and  politics  • High  level  of  emotional  intelligence  and  common  sense  with  the  ability  to  administer  the  role  of  a  

student  development  educator  with  high  efficacy  • Ability  to  manage  emergencies/crises  effectively  

• Native-­‐level   Chinese   and   English   fluency,   including   excellent   written   and   spoken   communication  skills  in  both  languages  • A   proven   ability   to   bring   creative   energy   and   ideas   to   an   organization   and   follow   through   with  

action  • Strong  sense  of  discretion,  confidentiality,  and  tact  • Ability   to   work   collaboratively   as   part   of   a   team   and   to   interact   effectively   with   colleagues,  

administrators,  faculty,  students,  and  other  affiliates    Preferred:  • Master’s  Degree  in  Higher  Education  Administration,  Counseling,  or  other  relevant  field  • Three   or   more   years   post-­‐graduate   experience   in   student   affairs   administration   among   US  

university/college  students  • Familiarity  with  US  law,  policy  and  regulatory  compliance  in  relationship  to  student  affairs  practice,  

especially  in  regard  to  ADA,  Title  IX,  and  FERPA  • Familiarity  with  contemporary  Chinese  university  systems  including  internal  structures  and  settings,  

values,   and   ethics   in   order   to   facilitate   smooth   collaboration   and   partnership   development  with  host  university.  • A  strong  understanding  of  the  international  higher  education  sector  and/or  a  personal  study  abroad
