Thishigh-reliefsculptureadornsthesarcophagusofJuniusBassus(317−59),afourth-centuryRomanpoliticianandearlyChristianconvert.Bassusonceheldthetitleofpraefectusurbi(urbanprefect)forRome.Jobisseen,farleft,sittingstoicallyonapileofrefuseashiswifeoffershimbread.Sheholdshernosetocoverthestench.BetweenthemstandseitherafriendorperhapsSatandisguisedasamerchant,adetailfromtheversionoftheJobstoryfoundnotintheBiblebutinthelaterTestamentofJob.TotherightareAdam,Eve,andaserpentwrappingitselfaroundthetreebetweenthem.ThistriadseemstomirrorJob,hiswife,andthetempter.JoblikelyrepresentstheChristianbeliefthatthefaithful,bymimickingtheperseveranceofChrist,canovercometemptationandgraspeternallife.3) ThespeakeronSundaysuggestedthattheBookofJobisarecastingofatraditionaltale,inwhich
