The rising concern about global energy crisis and its impact on the environment implies a transition from
the current development paradigm to a sustainable one, which remains a significant challenge for
scientists, industries and government to make reasonable energy and environmental policies to save
energy and reduce environmental impact as well as carbon emission during the managing and
controlling process at each level of the concerned ecosystems. There is already plenty of discussion
about these problems, along with an abundance of journals with disciplinary territories and sharp
boundaries on the intellectual landscape, some of which may prove to be valuable. However, we need a
problem-oriented forum, not a discipline-based one, for putting the pieces together, promoting
intelligent discussion of an integrated vision of human and natural world.
The International conference on Energy, Ecology and Environment (ICEEE) is created to describe a
cross-discipline concerning shortage of energy resources, degradation of ecosystems and deterioration
of environment. There have been changes in the course of history which has given specific emphases to
the specific issues relevant for the respective period of these doctrines. However, the vision of
sustainable development is often reflecting energy aspect and neglecting the ecological and
environmental issues. No single discipline has the capacity to cope with these kinds of coupled complex
issues. Growing interests have thus led us to integrate the main disciplines as our development strategy
in order to adapt our future to the irreversible changes inherent in the human civilization. It has become
evident that the complexity of such problems requires the need to enhance and deepening the
understanding of the implications of different aspects of the development of the world. This
international workshop aims to establish close links among these three fields, set up systems science
based on knowledge from other sciences and promote multidisciplinary solutions to settle the complex
social economic and environmental problems.

Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Cleaner Production (IF=5.715). Abstract: Achieving sustainability in the societal development is a multi-disciplinary undertaking, concentrating the efforts of chemical, mechanical, electrical engineers, as well as information technology experts. The “smart city” concept has emerged as a response to the sustainability and efficiency challenges. Significant advances have been achieved within the domains of information technology, transportation, infrastructure and power demand management. This provides promising tool for sustainability improvement, however leaves open the issue of setting the right goals and performance monitoring. Improving the sustainability of urban and regional systems requires evaluation and improvement actions on a holistic basis. This contribution provides an overview of the main lessons learned on resource efficiency and emission reduction, linking them to the smart city concept as key sustainability enablers for decision making in smart-city planning for sustainability improvement.
Prof. Gustaf Olsson
Title: Water-Energy-Food nexus Bio: Gustaf Olsson is professor in Industrial automation and since 2006 professor emeritus at Lund University, Sweden. He has devoted his research to control and automation in water systems, electrical power systems and industrial processes. For the last few years his research has been focused on the water-energy nexus.Since 2006 he has shared his time as a guest professor at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, the Technical University of Malaysia (UTM) and at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He is honorary faculty member of the Exeter University in UK. Between 2005 and 2010 he was the editor-in-chief of the journal Water Science and Technology. From 2007 to 2010 he has been a member of the IWA (International Water Association) Board of Directors. In 2010 he received the IWA Publication Award. In 2012 he was the awardee of an Honorary Doctor degree at UTM as well as an Honorary Membership of IWA. In 2014 he has been appointed Distinguished Fellow of the IWA. Abstract: Water is essential for all life. There are no substitutes. Water is not renewable, so we have to take care of the same amount of fresh water that was available for the dinosaurs. So the water is reused. A growing population, climate change, increasing standard of living, food production and industrialization will put a lot of pressure on water resources. Pollution and contamination of available fresh water sources will further decrease available water. Water is not just an environmental issue. It is a fundamental issue at the very heart of justice, development, economics and human rights. Energy is a fundamental condition for a decent life. Energy is needed to extract, treat and distribute drinking water as well as to collect and treat wastewater. It is less apparent that energy depends so much on water. Water is needed to extract primary energy, to refine the fuel, and to generate electric power. Energy production also has a large impact on water quality. The fundamental difference between water and energy is that energy can be renewable while water resources are not. Water and energy are inextricably linked and as a consequence both have to be addressed together. This is the water-energy nexus. The aim of this speech is to raise the awareness of the intricate couplings between water, energy and food. The promising development of renewable energy will significantly influence the water availability as well.
Prof. Hongwen He

He won second prize of the national science and technology progress award once with the 3rd place, the second prize of the technology invention award once with the 1st place and the first prize of provincial science and technology progress award twice with the 2nd place. He also serves as the editor broad member of the Journal of ENERGIES for one year and reviewer for the journals of APPLIED ENERGY, ENERGY, IEEE TRANSACTIONS for 5 years. Abstract: Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), as a vehicle integrated two or more kinds of power trains, provides an opportunity to separate the power requirements in both dynamic way and steady way, and controls the different power trains efficiently according to the working map. HEV has been a standard configuration of modern vehicles since the application of multiple energy resources and power engines. This presentation focus on four aspects as state-of-the-art HEV power trains with a tendency analysis, topology design methods, vehicle control unit and control network design, control strategies and energy managements, and the key problems in HEV control and optimization with case studies. Finally the big data application method for the HEV control is explored and the key structure is put forward for further discussions.
Study visit to Hammarby Sjöstad – A unique sustainability project in Stockholm Hammarby Sjöstad, an area centrally located in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is now in its finishing phase. It is a unique area in many ways and more than 100 000 visitors from all over the world have come to see it. Once fully built, Hammarby Sjöstad will have at least 12,000 residential units for more than 25,000 people and a total of about 35,000 people will live and work in the area. Hammarby Sjöstad should be fully built by 2017. The real key to the district’s success is the integrated planning that was carried out before the area was developed. All of the various authorities and administrations that normally get involved in the various stages of the process sat down and drew up the plan for the new conceptual approach that would result in Hammarby Sjöstad. The integrated planning work carried out from the start was – and still is – unique. The goal was to create a residential environment based on sustainable resource usage, where energy consumption, water use, car traffic and waste production are minimised, and resource saving and recycling are simultaneously maximised. Today this planning process is being applied in a number of new urban developments in Stockholm. The integrated environmental solutions can be followed through an eco-cycle that has become known as the Hammarby model. The eco-cycle handles energy, waste, water and sewage for housing, offices and other commercial activities in Hammarby Sjöstad. The eco-cycle is also designed to act as a role model for the development of equivalent technological systems in big cities. The Hammarby model has served as a very important tool for visualizing the integration of resource flows during the discussions between city departments, energy- water and waste companies and the architects and builder during the planning process. The study visit to Hammarby Sjöstad will have the following program: 09-10 Presentation of the area at the conference by Professor Ronald Wennersten 10-14 Transport to Hammarby Sjöstad, walk around tour, and lunch 14-15 Presentation of Smart City Sweden, The national export and investment platform for smart and sustainable cities. 15- Free walking in the area Cost for the study visit 30 USD, including 1-day public traffic pass and a lunch at Hammarby
