SUPERSTRUCTURE NOTES

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS:THIS STRUCTURE CONFORMS TO "STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGHWAY BRIDGES" ADOPTED BY THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS (AASHTO). THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATIONS WERE USED: - AASHTO MANUAL 17TH EDITION, 2002 - NATIONAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION (NDS), 2001 - ODOT BRIDGE DESIGN MANUALTHE WORK TO BE PERFORMED SHALL CONFORM TO THE 2002 EDITION OF THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS (CMS) INCLUDING ANY SUPPLEMENTAL SPECIFICATIONS HEREIN. ITEM 521 SHALL BE PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE 1997 CMS.

DESIGN LOADING: - HS25-44 TRAFFIC LOADING - 3" ASPHALT WEARING SURFACE (37.5-PSF) - MILL BEFORE ADDING ANY FUTURE WEARING SURFACE (TOTAL WEARING SURFACE NOT TO EXCEED 3")

STRUCTURAL STEEL: PLATES, RODS, ASSEMBLIES:ALL STRUCTURAL STEEL ITEMS SHALL BE HOT DIP GALVANIZED PER ASTM A123/A153 AND ODOT 711.02 OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS. ANGLES AND ALL OTHER MISCELLANEOUS STEEL ITEMS NOT SPECIFIED OTHERWISE SHALL BE ASTM A36/A709 GRADE 36 STEEL, Fy = 36KSI. ALL STRUCTURAL STEEL SHALL BE PAID FOR UNDER ITEM 513, STRUCTURAL STEEL, MISCELLANEOUS: PLATES, RODS, ASSEMBLIES.

PLATES - ALL PLATES INCLUDING DIAGONAL ROD END-BEARING PLATES, LOWER CHORD SPLICE PLATES, SAG ROD MOUNTING PLATES, AND PLATE WASHERS SHALL BE ASTM A36/A709, Fy = 36KSI.

RODS - STEEL RODS SHALL INCLUDE PRATT TRUSS DIAGONAL RODS, FLOOR BEAM HANGER RODS, ROOF SYSTEM CROSS-BRACING RODS (SAG RODS), AND ALL THE CORRESPONDING ATTACHMENTS. ALL RODS SHALL BE THREADED ON EACH END WITH UNIFIED INCH COURSE THREADS (ANSI UNC).

PRATT TRUSS DIAGONAL RODS SHALL BE ASTM A193-B7, Fu = 125KSI. DIAGONAL RODS SHALL BE THREADED 9" ON EACH END AND SHALL BE DOUBLE-NUTTED ON EACH END FOR LOCKING PURPOSES.

FLOOR BEAM HANGER RODS SHALL BE ASTM A449, Fu = 120KSI IN ACCORDANCE WITH AASHTO M164. FLOOR BEAM HANGER RODS SHALL BE THREADED 6" ON EACH END AND SHALL BE DOUBLE-NUTTED ON EACH END FOR LOCKING PURPOSES.

SAG RODS SHALL BE ASTM A449, Fu = 120KSI IN ACCORDANCE WITH AASHTO M164, AND SHALL BE THREADED 6" ON EACH END. SLEEVE NUTS AT EACH END OF THE SAG RODS SHALL BE OF THE SAME MATERIAL AND CAPABLE OF CARRYING THE FULL LOAD CAPACITY OF THE SAG RODS. EYEBAR/ROD ENDS AT EACH END OF THE SAG RODS SHALL BE ASTM A193-B7 AND HAVE A 4" THREADED PORTION.

ASSEMBLIES - MISCELLANEOUS ASSEMBLIES INCLUDE THE SWAY BRACE AND BEARING PLATE ASSEMBLY, THE MOUNTING BRACKET ASSEMBLY FOR PRATT TRUSS VERTICAL ELEMENTS , AND THE UPPER CHORD SPLICE PLATE ASSEMBLY. ALL MISCELLANEOUS STEEL ASSEMBLIES SHALL BE ASTM A36/A709, Fy = 36KSI.

HARDWARE:ALL HARDWARE INCLUDING SHEAR PLATE CONNECTORS, HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS, DOME-HEAD DRIVE SPIKES, LAG SCREWS, DOME-HEAD BOLTS, SPIKES, NAILS, NUTS AND WASHERS SHALL BE HOT DIP GALVANIZED PER ASTM A123/A153 AND ODOT 711.02 OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS. SPIKES AND NAILS MAY BE MECHANICALLY ZINC COATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM B695 CLASS 50. ALL HARDWARE SHALL BE INCLUDED FOR PAYMENT UNDER ITEM 513, STRUCTURAL STEEL, MISCELLANEOUS: HARDWARE. ALL BOLT HOLES AND LEAD HOLES REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION OF THE HARDWARE SHALL BE PREDRILLED BY THE FABRICATOR PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF THE TIMBER PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT. UNLESS SPECIFICALLY NOTED OTHERWISE, FIELD DRILLING OF TIMBER MEMBERS SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED.

SHEAR PLATE CONNECTORS - SHEAR PLATES SHALL BE MADE OF MALLEABLE IRON. EACH CASTING SHALL CONSIST OF A PERFORATED ROUND PLATE WITH A FLANGE AROUND THE EDGE, EXTENDING AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE FACE OF THE PLATE AND PROJECTING FROM ONE FACE ONLY. THE PLATE PORTION SHALL HAVE A CENTRAL BOLT HOLE WITH AN INTEGRAL HUB EXTENDING FROM THE SAME FACE AS THE FLANGE. ALL THRU-BOLTS, LAG SCREWS, AND DOME-HEAD BOLTS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH SHEAR PLATE CONNECTORS SHALL HAVE CUT THREADS WITH UNREDUCED SHANK DIAMETERS. MINIMUM ALLOWABLE SHEAR CAPACITY FOR SHEAR PLATE CONNECTORS LOADED PARALLEL TO THE GRAIN SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS: BOLT DIA. SHEAR PLATE DIA. SHEAR CAPACITY 3/4" 2-5/8" 2900-LB 3/4" 4" 4400-LB 7/8" 4" 6000-LB

HIGH-STRENGTH FASTENERS - UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, ALL HIGH-STRENGTH FASTENERS INCLUDING THRU-BOLTS AND ANCHOR BOLTS SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM A325 IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ODOT CMS ITEM 711.09. PROOF LOAD TESTS (ASTM F606 METHOD 1) ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL BOLTS. WEDGE TESTS ARE REQUIRED FOR ACTUAL BOLT SIZES USED ON THIS PROJECT IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 8.3 OF AASHTO M164. GALVANIZED BOLTS SHALL BE WEDGE TESTED AFTER GALVANIZING.

NUTS - ALL HEAVY HEX NUTS FOR ASTM A325 BOLTS SHALL CONFORM TO AASHTO M291 (ASTM A563) GRADES DH, DH3, C, C3, AND D. ALTERNATIVELY, NUTS MAY CONFORM AASHTO M292 (ASTM A194) GRADES 2 AND 2H. NUTS TO BE HOT-DIP GALVANIZED SHALL BE HEAT TREATED GRADE 2H, DH, OR DH3. ALL GALVANIZED NUTS SHALL BE LUBRICATED WITH A LUBRICANT CONTAINING VISIBLE DYE. PROOF LOAD TESTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE NUTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH AASHTO M291. THE PROOF LOAD TESTS FOR NUTS TO BE USED WITH GALVANIZED BOLTS SHALL BE PERFORMED AFTER GALVANIZING, OVERTAPPING, AND LUBRICATING.

LAG SCREWS - CONFORM TO ASTM A307, ANSI B18.2.1, AND THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE STANDARD NO. 25-17, SECTION 225.11735 & 25.1736. LAG SCREWS SHALL BE SQUARE OR STANDARD HEX HEAD SCREWS IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD. NOMINAL SIZES ARE AS SHOWN ON THE PLANS. LEAD HOLES SHALL BE PREBORED FOR EACH LAG SCREW. THE LEAD HOLE FOR THE UNTHREADED SHANK DIAMETER SHALL HAVE THE SAME DIAMETER AS THE SHANK AND DEPTH EQUAL TO THE LENGTH OF THE UNTHREADED SHANK. THE LEAD HOLE FOR THE THREADED PORTION OF THE SCREW SHALL HAVE A DEPTH EQUAL TO THE LENGTH OF THE THREADS. LEAD HOLE DIAMETERS FOR THE UNTHREADED SHANK AND THE THREADED PORTION SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS: SCREW DIA. UNTHREADED SHANK THREADED PORTION 5/8" 5/8" 13/32" 3/4" 3/4" 1/2" 7/8" 7/8" 39/64" 1" 1" 23/32"

DOME-HEAD BOLTS - THE SHANK SHALL BE UNREDUCED IN DIAMETER. THESE BOLTS SHALL CONFORM WITH ASTM A307 COARSE THREAD. DEPENDING ON MANUFACTURER, BOLT HEADS MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE VALUES SHOWN BELOW. BOLTS WITH LARGER HEAD DIMENSIONS ARE ACCEPTABLE. THE MINIMUM HEAD DIAMETER AND THICKNESS SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS: BOLT DIA. HEAD DIA. HEAD THICKNESS 5/8" 1-15/16" 5/16" 3/4" 2-1/4" 3/8" 7/8" 2-5/8" 7/16" 1" 2-7/8" 1/2"

DOME-HEAD DRIVE SPIKES - DRIVE SPIKES USED TO ANCHOR FLOOR PANELS TO FLOOR BEAMS SHALL BE 3/4" DIAMETER BY 16" LONG, WITH SPIRAL GROOVING INTENDED FOR DRIVING INTO PREDRILLED 19/32" LEAD HOLES (OR PER MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS). THE SPIKES SHALL BE DOME HEADED WITH A MINIMUM HEAD DIAMETER OF 2-1/4" AND A MINIMUM HEAD THICKNESS OF 3/8" (DEPENDING ON MANUFACTURER). THE DRIVE SPIKES SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM A66-87 "STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR STEEL SCREW SPIKES" AND THE DESIGN VALUES FOR WITHDRAWAL LOADS PUBLISHED IN THE TIMBER CONSTRUCTION MANUAL OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION (AITC). SPIKES AND NAILS - HARDENED STEEL SPIKES AND NAILS SHALL BE HEAT TREATED TO A MINIMUM HARDNESS OF ROCKWELL C37. THE FINISHED PRODUCT SHALL BE SUFFICIENTLY DUCTILE TO WITHSTAND (WITHOUT FRACTURE) COLD BENDING THROUGH 20 DEGREES OVER A DIAMETER NOT GREATER THAN THE DIAMETER OF THE NAIL. SPIKE AND NAIL SIZES AND DESIGNATIONS SHALL CONFORM WITH THE 2001 NATIONAL DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION (NDS). IF REQUIRED, 6d AND 8d NAILS MAY BE COMMON NAILS (UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE). ALL OTHER SIZES SHALL BE RING SHANK HARDENED STEEL. NAIL SIZES ARE LISTED FOR THE FOLLOWING ATTACHMENTS: 16d (3-1/2") SIDING, TRIM, PURLINS, FASCIA, RAKE BOARD, 2x4 END GIRTS, CURB BLOCKING 60d (6") 4x4 SIDING GIRTS, 4x4 END-FRAMING NAILER

WASHERS - NO WASHERS ARE REQUIRED WITH DOME-HEAD DRIVE SPIKES OR DOME-HEAD BOLTS. HARDENED STEEL WASHERS CONFORMING TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF AASHTO M293 (ASTM F436) SHALL BE USED UNDER THE HEADS OF LAG SCREWS, THRU-BOLTS, AND ANCHOR BOLTS BEARING ON STEEL COMPONENTS THAT HAVE OVERSIZED OR SLOTTED HOLES. ALL HOLES ARE STANDARD HOLES UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE. UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, MALLEABLE IRON RIBBED WASHERS SHALL BE USED UNDER THE HEADS OF LAG SCREWS, ANCHOR BOLTS, AND AT BOTH ENDS OF THRU-BOLTS BEARING ON TIMBER COMPONENTS. MALLEABLE IRON WASHER SIZES SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS: BOLT DIA. WASHER DIA. WASHER THICKNESS 5/8" 2-3/4" 5/16" 3/4" 3" 1/2" 7/8" 3-1/2" 9/16" 1" 4" 9/16"

TIMBER PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT:PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT SHALL CONFORM WITH CMS 712.06, AASHTO M133, AND AITC 109-84. ALL GLULAM TIMBER SHALL BE TREATED AFTER GLUING PER AWPA C28 (EXCEPT AS NOTED UNDER #4 BELOW). WHEREVER PRACTICABLE, TIMBER PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT SHALL BE APPLIED UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT THE PROJECT SITE. ANY REQUIRED FIELD TREATMENT SHALL BE DONE USING COPPER NAPTHENATE ACCORDING TO AWPA M4-84 AND THE CMS. ALL CUTTING, DRILLING, MACHINING, AND FABRICATION SHALL BE DONE PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF THE PRIMARY PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT. TREAT LUMBER WITH COPPER NAPTHENATE WHEREVER CUTTING, DRILLING, OR MACHINING IS DONE AFTER APPLICATION OF THE PRIMARY PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT (AS WITH TYPE #4 TREATMENT NOTED BELOW). INCISING SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED. PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT SHALL BE APPLIED PRIOR TO MISCELLANEOUS COATINGS AND WOOD SHALL BE FREE OF EXCESS PRESERVATIVE SOLVENT AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE TREATING PROCESS. BRIDGE TIMBER INCLUDING TIMBER FLOOR DECK, FLOOR BEAMS, SPREADER BEAMS, BEARING BLOCKS, LOWER KNEE BRACING, PRATT TRUSS LOWER CHORDS, AND TIMBER CURBS SHALL BE TREATED AS SPECIFIED IN THE TIMBER SUMMARY TABLE. APPROVED METHODS OF PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT ARE AS FOLLOWS:

#1 - COPPER NAPTHENATE (AWPA P8) IN TYPE A HYDROCARBON SOLVENT (AWPA P9) EMPTY-CELL PRESSURE TREATED TO 0.6 LB/CF RETENTION OR REFUSAL (AWPA C14 AND C28).

#2 - PENTACHLOROPHENOL (AWPA P8) IN HEAVY OIL, TYPE A HYDROCARBON SOLVENT (AWPA P9) EMPTY-CELL PRESSURE TREATED TO 0.6 LB/CF RETENTION OR REFUSAL (AWPA C14 AND C28).

#3 - CHROMATED COPPER ARSENATE (CCA) TYPES I, II, OR III (AWPA P5) PRESSURE TREATED TO 0.6 LB/CF RETENTION OR REFUSAL PER FEDERAL STANDARD TT-E-551 (AWPA C14). ACA SHALL BE USED IN PLACE OF CCA FOR DOUGLAS FIR COMPONENTS (CCA IS NOT PERMITTED FOR DOUGLAS FIR).

#4 - GLULAM PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT (BEFORE GLUING): CHROMATED COPPER ARSENATE (CCA) TYPES I, II, OR III (AWPA P5) PRESSURE TREATED TO 0.4 LB/CF RETENTION (AWPA C28, M4). GLUED SURFACES OF TREATED LAMINATIONS SHALL BE PLANED PRIOR TO GLUING. ACA SHALL BE USED IN PLACE OF CCA FOR DOUGLAS FIR COMPONENTS (CCA IS NOT PERMITTED FOR DOUGLAS FIR).

ALL TIMBER BEARING BLOCKS THAT WILL REST ON BRIDGE SEATS AT THE ABUTMENTS SHALL BE PRESSURE TREATED FOR SOIL CONTACT WITH TWO HEAVY COATS OF CCA. A CERTIFICATE OF TREATMENT, FURNISHED BY A CERTIFIED AWPA TREATMENT FACILITY IS REQUIRED FOR CONFORMANCE TO THE ABOVE TREATMENTS.

STRUCTURAL TIMBER AND LUMBER:ALL STRUCTURAL TIMBER AND LUMBER SHALL CONFORM WITH ODOT 711.26 OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS AND SHALL NOT EXCEED 19% MOISTURE CONTENT BY WEIGHT. GLUED LAMINATED LUMBER SHALL BE KILN-DRIED WITH A MOISTURE CONTENT NOT TO EXCEED 16% BY WEIGHT. WHERE SPECIFIC FRAMING AND FASTENING DETAILS ARE NOT SHOWN ON THESE PLANS, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL USE PROPER CARPENTRY FRAMING AND FASTENING TECHNIQUES STANDARD TO THE INDUSTRY AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION (AITC) IN ORDER TO PRODUCE A SOUND, SQUARE, AND PLUMB STRUCTURE.

SHOP DRAWINGS - THE FABRICATOR SHALL FURNISH SHOP DRAWINGS FOR EACH COMPONENT DETAILING ALL MEMBER SIZES, TIMBER CONNECTIONS, AND LUMBER COMBINATIONS BASED ON GRADE AND SPECIES. SIZE AND LOCATION OF HOLES, NOTCHES, AND SAW-CUTS SHALL BE ACCURATELY DETAILED FOR EACH COMPONENT AND SHALL CONFORM TO THE EDGE DISTANCE, END DISTANCE AND SPACING REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIED IN THE NATIONAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION (NDS), 2001 EDITION.

MEMBER SIZES AND DIMENSIONS - GLULAM MEMBER SIZES AND DIMENSIONS SHOWN ON THE PLANS ARE ACTUAL FINISHED SIZES, UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE. MEMBER SIZES CALLED OUT ON THE PLANS FOR TIMBERS AND SAWN LUMBER ARE NOMINAL SIZES, UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE. ACTUAL SIZES AND NOMINAL SIZES ARE INDICATED AS FOLLOWS: ACTUAL SIZES: 1" x 1" NOMINAL SIZES: 1 x 1

TIMBER PROTECTION - THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTION OF THE MATERIALS AFTER ARRIVAL AT THE DESTINATION BY RAIL CARS, TRUCKS, OR ANY OTHER MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. CAREFULLY UNLOAD AND HANDLE THE GLULAM AND TIMBER MEMBERS AT THE JOB SITE TO PREVENT SURFACE MARRING AND DAMAGE. IF GLUED LAMINATED WOOD IS TO BE STORED ON-SITE BEFORE ERECTION, PLACE IT ON BLOCKS WELL OFF THE GROUND WITH INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS SEPARATED BY STRIPS SO THAT AIR MAY CIRCULATE. COVER THE TOP AND SIDES OF STORAGE PILES WITH MOISTURE-RESISTANT COVERING (DO NOT USE CLEAR POLYETHYLENE FILMS). WHEN HOISTING MEMBERS INTO PLACE, USE PADDED OR NON-MARRING SLINGS AND PROTECT CORNERS WITH WOOD BLOCKING. ADEQUATELY BRACE MEMBERS AS THEY ARE ERECTED TO HOLD THEM IN A SAFE POSITION UNTIL FULL STABILITY IS PROVIDED.

SIDING - LUMBER SPECIES FOR SIDING MAY DIFFER FROM THAT USED ON THE REST OF THE BRIDGE, HOWEVER, THE SAME SIDING SPECIES MUST BE USED THROUGHOUT. IF S1S2E IS USED, THE ROUGH SAWN SIDE SHALL BE TO THE WEATHER. SIDING BOARDS SHALL BE HUNG WITH 1/4" OPENINGS BETWEEN THEM FOR SEASONED MATERIAL AND WITH TIGHT JOINTS FOR UNSEASONED MATERIAL.

GLUED LAMINATED COMPONENTS (GLULAM) - MANUFACTURE OF THE STRUCTURAL GLUED LAMINATED WOOD COMPONENTS SHALL CONFORM TO THE MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR GLUED LAMINATED TIMBER AITC 117. THE GLULAM MANUFACTURER AND FABRICATOR SHALL BE A CERTIFIED MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION (AITC). GLULAM SUPPLIERS INCLUDE: ART THURESON, INC. SENTINEL STRUCTURES, INC. QUALITY CONTROL SHALL BE PROVIDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ANSI/AITC A190.1 LATEST EDITION, AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR WOOD PRODUCTS-STRUCTURAL GLUED LAMINATED TIMBER, AND THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION MANUAL AITC 200-2004. GLULAM MEMBERS SHALL BE MARKED WITH A QUALITY MARK, AND A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMANCE SHALL BE PROVIDED TO INDICATE CONFORMANCE WITH ANSI/AITC A 190.1-LATEST EDITION. APPEARANCE GRADE SHALL BE AITC INDUSTRIAL.

ITEM 514, FIELD PAINTING, MISC.: STAINING OF SIDING AND TRIM:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO STAIN THE SIDING AND TRIM. ALL SIDING, TRIM, SPECIAL ACCENT TRIM, FASCIA, AND RAKE BOARDS SHALL RECEIVE TWO (2) COATS OF OIL BASE STAIN PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. THE FIRST COAT SHALL BE APPLIED TO ALL SIDES OF THE BOARDS. THE SECOND COAT SHALL BE APPLIED TO THE EXPOSED EXTERIOR SURFACE ONLY. THE STAINING QUANTITY SHOWN IN THE ESTIMATED QUANTITIES TABLE IS CALCULATED BASED ON THE AREA OF THE EXPOSED EXTERIOR SURFACE ONLY. UNIT BID PRICES SHALL ACCOUNT FOR ALL COATS OF STAIN: ONE COAT APPLIED TO ALL SIDES OF THE BOARDS IN ADDITION TO THE SECOND COAT APPIED TO THE EXPOSED EXTERIOR SURFACE.

APPLY BOTH COATS BY BRUSH. THE DRYING TIME BETWEEN COATS IS 24 HOURS. TO AVOID LAP MARKS, MAINTAIN A CONTINUOUS WET EDGE. THE LAP AND BRUSH MARKS SHALL NOT BE EVIDENT ON THE DRIED FILM. AVOID STAINING IN DIRECT HOT SUNLIGHT. DO NOT APPLY IF AIR, PRODUCT, AND SURFACE TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW 50 DEGREES F (10 DEGREES C) OR IF RAIN IS THREATENING. STAIN SHALL BE STIRRED THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO USE AND STIRRED AGAIN PERIODICALLY DURING THE JOB TO ENSURE EVEN COLOR AND HIDE. THINNING OF THE STAIN IS NOT PERMITTED.

THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE GLULAM PRATT TRUSS ELEMENTS, THE GLULAM END-FRAMING, AND THE GLULAM GUIDERAIL. THIS ITEM SHALL ALSO INCLUDE THE APPLICATION OF THE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR THE GLULAM PRATT TRUSS COMPONENTS, AS INDICATED IN THE TIMBER SUMMARY TABLE.

THE PRATT TRUSS SHALL HAVE A 3" CAMBER TO ACCOUNT FOR DEAD LOAD DEFLECTION. SINCE THE CAMBER IS SMALL RELATIVE THE SPAN LENGTH OF THE PRATT TRUSS, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO FABRICATE THE CAMBER INTO THE UPPER AND LOWER CHORD MEMBERS OF THE PRATT TRUSS. INSTEAD, THE CAMBER MAY BE DEVELOPED IN THE FIELD DURING THE TRUSS ASSEMBLY PROCESS, BY ADJUSTING THE POSITION OF THE TRUSS ELEMENTS PRIOR TO INSTALLING AND TIGHTENING THE FASTENERS AND DIAGONAL RODS. FOR THE PURPOSES OF FIELD OBSERVATION, NOTIFY THE ENGINEER THREE (3) DAYS PRIOR TO INSTALLING THE CAMBER AND TIGHTENING THE PRATT TRUSS CONNECTIONS. ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: ROOF SYSTEM, GLULAM:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE GLULAM PORTION OF THE ROOF SYSTEM. ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: ROOF SYSTEM, MISC.:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER PORTION OF THE ROOF SYSTEM. THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS: TIMBER GUSSETS, PURLINS, AND ANY OTHER MISCELLANEOUS TIMBER BLOCKING REQUIRED TO INSTALL THE ROOF SYSTEM.

THIS ITEM SHALL ALSO INCLUDE ALL TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT BRACING REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN STABILITY OF THE ROOF TRUSS SYSTEM DURING CONSTRUCTION. ROOF TRUSSES MUST BE SECURELY BRACED PRIOR TO AND DURING THE INSTALLATION OF THE ROOF PURLINS AND ROOFING MATERIAL.

ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: PRATT TRUSSES, MISC.:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER PORTION OF THE PRATT TRUSSES. THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS: UPPER AND LOWER CHORD KNEE BRACES, UPPER CHORD BLOCKING, SPACER BLOCKING BETWEEN MOUNTING BRACKETS FOR PRATT TRUSS VERTICALS, SPACER BLOCKING BETWEEN END-FRAMING ELEMENTS, AND ANY OTHER MISCELLANEOUS TIMBER BLOCKING REQUIRED TO ASSEMBLE THE PRATT TRUSSES. THIS ITEM SHALL ALSO INCLUDE THE APPLICATION OF THE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS OF THE PRATT TRUSS, AS INDICATED IN THE TIMBER SUMMARY TABLE.

ERECTION, BRACING AND SHORING PLANS: THE UPPER CHORDS OF PRATT TRUSSES MUST BE ADEQUATELY BRACED AFTER THE PRATT TRUSSES ARE SET INTO PLACE, AND BEFORE ANY ADDITIONAL DEAD LOAD (BEYOND THE SELF-WEIGHT OF THE PRATT TRUSSES) IS APPLIED TO THE TRUSSES. NO LIVE LOAD INCLUDING THE WEIGHT OF ANY EQUIPMENT SHALL BE APPLIED TO THE PRATT TRUSSES PRIOR TO THE BRACING OF THE UPPER CHORDS. THE UPPER CHORD BRACING AND ANY REQUIRED SHORING SHALL NOT BE REMOVED UNTIL THE FLOOR BEAMS ARE IN PLACE AND THE SAG RODS, ROOF TRUSSES, AND ROOF PURLINS ARE FULLY INSTALLED AND PROPERLY ANCHORED TO THE UPPER CHORD OF THE PRATT TRUSSES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DESIGN OF THE "ERECTION, BRACING AND SHORING PLANS." THREE (3) SETS OF THE "ERECTION, BRACING AND SHORING PLANS," WHICH SHALL INCLUDE THE INFORMATION DESCRIBED IN THIS NOTE, SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO THE ENGINEER OF RECORD FOR APPROVAL AT LEAST THIRTY (30) DAYS BEFORE THE ACTUAL WORK IS TO BEGIN. THE PLANS SHALL BE PREPARED BY A PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER REGISTERED IN THE STATE OF OHIO, AND EXPERIENCED IN THIS TYPE OF DESIGN. PLANS FOR SHORING AND BRACING OF THE MAIN TRUSSES SHALL INCLUDE AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING:

1. THE SIGNATURE, NUMBER AND SEAL OF THE PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER REGISTERED IN THE STATE OF OHIO WHO PREPARED THE SUBMITTAL.

2. DRAWINGS SHOWING THE UPPER CHORD BRACING AND ANY ADDITIONAL SHORING THAT MAY BE REQUIRED. THESE DRAWINGS SHALL INCLUDE THE PHYSICAL AND DIMENSIONAL LOCATIONS OF THE BRACING AND METHODS OF ATTACHMENT TO THE PRATT TRUSS MEMBERS (ADDING HOLES TO THE STRUCTURAL GLULAM AND TIMBER MEMBERS SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED).

3. A SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS FOR THE INSTALLATION AND BRACING OF THE PRATT TRUSSES, THE INSTALLATION OF THE FLOOR SYSTEM, AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE ROOF SYSTEM.

PAYMENT FOR THIS WORK SHALL BE INCLUDED WITH ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: PRATT TRUSSES, MISC. THIS PAYMENT SHALL INCLUDE FULL COMPENSATION FOR ALL NECESSARY TOOLS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, AND INCIDENTALS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE WORK IN CONFORMANCE WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS AND TO THE SATISFACTION OF THE ENGINEER.

ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: FLOOR SYSTEM, MISC.:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER PORTION OF THE FLOOR SYSTEM. THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS: TIMBER CURB, CURB BLOCKING, FLOOR BEAM BEARING BLOCKS, AND ANY OTHER MISCELLANEOUS TIMBER BLOCKING REQUIRED TO INSTALL THE FLOOR SYSTEM. THIS ITEM SHALL ALSO INCLUDE THE APPLICATION OF THE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS OF THE FLOOR SYSTEM, AS INDICATED IN THE TIMBER SUMMARY TABLE. ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: SIDING AND TRIM: THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SIDING ELEMENTS. THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SOLID SAWN TIMBER COMPONENTS: SIDING GIRTS AND NAILERS, VERTICAL SIDING BOARDS, TRIM, SPECIAL ACCENT TRIM, FASCIA, RAKE BOARD, AND WINDOW SILL PLATES.

ITEM 521, BRIDGE TIMBER, MISC.: BEARING BLOCKS:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SOLID SAWN TIMBER BLOCKING FOR THE PRATT TRUSS BEARING LOCATIONS AND FOR THE DECK BEARING LOCATIONS. THIS ITEM SHALL ALSO INCLUDE THE APPLICATION OF THE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR THE BEARING BLOCKS; ALL TIMBER BEARING BLOCKS SHALL BE WHITE OAK AND TREATED FOR SOIL CONTACT WITH TWO HEAVY COATS OF CCA.

ITEM 530, SPECIAL-STRUCTURE: WOOD SHAKE ROOFING: THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE WOOD SHAKE ROOFING PER THE MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS, THE RIDGE CAP, AND THE METAL DRIP EDGE. ROOFING FELT IS NOT REQUIRED. THE WOOD SHAKES SHALL BE EITHER TAPERSAWN (SAWN ON BOTH FACES) OR HANDSPLIT/RESAWN (SPLIT ON EXPOSED FACE AND SAWN ON OTHER FACE). IF USED, HANDSPLIT/RESAWN SHAKES MUST BE #1 GRADE OR BETTER.

SHAKES SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF 1/2" THICK BY 24" LONG (±1/2"). SHAKES MAY RANGE IN WIDTH FROM A MINIMUM OF 4" TO A MAXIMUM OF 14". FASTENERS USED TO ANCHOR SHAKES TO PURLINS SHALL BE OF ADEQUATE LENGTH TO PENETRATE THE PURLINS AT LEAST 1/2".

ITEM 530, SPECIAL-MISC.: BRIDGE SIGNAGE:THIS ITEM SHALL INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND INCIDENTALS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE, SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE SIGNAGE AT THE ENDS OF THE BRIDGE. THIS WORK SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: ARCHED PANELS/TRIM, SIGNAGE MATERIAL, LETTERING, AND MOUNTING HARDWARE. THE CONTRACTOR/ FABRICATOR SHALL SUBMIT SIGNAGE SHOP DRAWINGS AND MOCK-UPS TO ENGINEER FOR APPROVAL PRIOR TO FABRICATION. SHOP DRAWINGS / MOCK-UPS SHALL INCLUDE DETAILED LAYOUT, MATERIAL SAMPLES, LETTERING EXAMPLES, COLOR SCHEME, AND MEANS OF ATTACHMENT TO THE STRUCTURE INCLUDING HARDWARE DESIGN. SHOP DRAWINGS AND MOCK-UPS SHALL BE INCLUDED UNDER THIS PAY ITEM.
