Building your vocabulary is very important. There are four ways on how to improve your vocabulary skills. Learn them here!

Strategies to help improve vocabulary

Learning the meaning of words from the context of your reading material can be the most useful strategy to increase your vocabulary comprehension.

1. Context clues

Context Clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word.

1. Mingming is gregarious, not like his sister who is quiet and shy.

**Context Clues by antonyms

Example:

1. Some celestial bodies, such as the planets and stars, can be seen with the naked eye.

Example:

Using the context that surrounds an unknown word helps to reveal its meaning.

1. Context clues

Sometimes a word can give clues to the meaning in its structure. Analyzing the word’s structure and properties is a vocabulary strategy that you can use to figure out the word’s meaning.

2. Word structure

When you approach an unknown word, you can guess at its meaning by breaking down the parts of the word.

You are doing structural analysis/ word structure when you break out the following:

1. Root Word2. Prefix3. Suffix

When you use visual-aural association, you think of a word that either looks like or sounds like the word whose meaning you are trying to learn.

Thinking of the picture of the look-alike word and/or image will help you remember the word and its meaning.

You are learning the meaning of the word GREGARIOUS – in which the meaning is talkative

**Since the word gregarious is hard to memorize, you just think of the word HILARIOUS for you to remember the word and its meaning. Because Gregarious and Hilarious sounds alike.

Example:

The best way to improve your vocabulary is to carry a pocket dictionary to look up new words as you encounter them.

Or, you can collect a list of new words you encounter to look up at the end of the day.
