St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, for this Vodkat League Premier Division contest against Formby. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Formby to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening, after their short trip across to us. It has been a month since we last took to the field here at Knowsley Road on an evening when we came from behind twice to earn a point from a 2-2 draw. This was followed by a below par performance at Cammell Lairds which saw Town exit the FA Cup. A week later Town visited this evening’s opponents Formby looking to get back to winning ways and a fine display saw the visitors wrap up a 4-0 victory with braces for both Rob Hanley and Graeme Mitchell. A fortnight’s break from competitive action was on the cards and Gary Bickerstaffe arranged a friendly contest at Skelmersdale United and the boys had a good work out in a 2-2 draw with Graeme Mitchell and Iain Dyson back on the score sheet. Saturday saw us take the trip to Wincham Park to take on Runcorn Linnets and after going behind to an early penalty the boys bounced back to make it four wins out of four in the league on the road a rare goal from Marc Stephens and a Graeme Mitchell effort ensured Town returned to Merseyside with all three points. Gary and the lads will be looking to take the excellent away form into today’s match in an effort to improve the home form which has seen us record one win, two draws and a loss at home this term, albeit one of the draws and the loss have come against Bootle & Newcastle Town sides that will be expecting to be at the top of the table come the end of the season. It has been all change at Formby in the past week or so as manager Tony Martin was shown the door and former Altrincham man Mark Maddox has been appointed. As normally happens after a new man takes the helm Formby recorded a victory against Ashton Athletic on Saturday. Town will know they are in for a tough match this evening but here’s hoping that we can play to our full potential and win this evening! Enjoy the Game Jeff Voller

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat North West
Counties Premier Division encounter with Formby FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and
supporters have had a safe journey and enjoy out hospitality - but not the score-line!
Since we last played at home we’ve enjoyed the highs of two league successes and the low
of a disappointing 3-1 exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Unibond side Cammell Lairds. The first of the league victories came at tonight’s visitor’s Formby two weeks ago when a 4-0
score saw Town take all three points with a brace each for Rob Hanley and Graeme Mitchell.
Last Saturday we travelled to Runcorn Linnets and despite going behind to a 4th minute
penalty the lads hit back with goals from Marc Stevens and Graeme Mitchell to maintain our
100% away league record. It was an excellent performance from Town in a game which
saw both teams battle the elements. Unfortunately the game ended on a sour note with
Runcorn’s Steve Cunningham being dismissed for attempting to head-but Town ‘keeper
Graeme McCall and as occasionally happens tempers frayed in the tunnel as the players left
the field! In between the two league games there was a hastily arranged friendly at
Skelmersdale United where an entertaining encounter which eventually finished 2-2.
Most of the home support will now be aware that Karl Ledsham has moved on to pastures news with Skem’ and during the friendly encounter he wore the captain’s armband and gave
our hosts the lead. Our best wishes go to Karl for a successful future in the Unibond League.
We also welcome a new face to the Town ranks as defender Peter Birch joins from
Burscough!
Congratulations go to John Elias who picked up the September Player of the Month award -
he now gets to choose a car from the Johnson Toyota Liverpool range. I’d like to offer my
thanks to tonight’s Match Sponsors Johnson Toyota Liverpool and in particular their
General Sales Manager Gareth Shone for their continued support; along with tonight’s Match
Ball Sponsor Energy Solutions Ltd. Don’t forget to cast your vote for the Town September
Goal of the Month via Matt’s excellent blog - www.thetownblog.blogspot.com.
As detailed elsewhere in the programme tomorrow (7th
October) is the 60th Anniversary of Bert Trautmann’s transfer
from Town to Manchester City. The club has been working
hard to arrange a commemorative fixture with the Manchester
City Legends team and I am pleased to announce this will take
place on Sunday 15 November 2009, 1pm kick off at the
Regional Athletics Stadium adjacent to the City of Manchester
Stadium. Admission will be £4 Adults and £2 OAPs/U16s with
proceeds supporting the Bert Trautmann Foundation, St.
Helens Town and a charity nominated by the Legends team. The club will be producing a
commemorative programme and will be holding a number of fundraising activities on the
day - please do your best to support the event and get to the game. We’re hoping for a big
crowd as City will be using their ‘marketing people’ to ensure maximum exposure. I am on the look-out for a match and match ball sponsor for the fixture, if your interested or can help
give me a call on 07976 059404.
Best wishes and let’s cheer the lads on to three points . . .

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
In Town Today . . . Formby United Football Club was founded at the end of the Great War in 1919. The club moved to Brows Lane in 1920 and following the move the club dropped the 'United' title. The club would remain at Brows Lane for eighty-two years before moving to their new stadium in Altcar Road. In the beginning they joined the Liverpool & District League before moving onto Liverpool League, the I Zingari Football League and then the Liverpool County Combination in 1938. Despite being known as
one of the top sides in the 'County Comb' they only won the Championship once, that coming in 1948/49. However they did enjoy regular cup successes, winning the Liverpool Amateur Cup on three occasions, in 1930, 1948 & 1949, the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1935, the Liverpool Challenge Cup twice in 1953 & 1964, and the George Mahon Cup in 1965. In 1968, Formby joined the Lancashire Combination and stay until May 1971 when they switched to the Cheshire League. They became the first non league club to win the Liverpool Senior Cup in 1977/78 when they defeated a strong Tranmere Rovers side, 1-0 at Brows Lane, and the following season they finished fourth in the Cheshire League. Formby hit the nations headlines in 1973, when, they reached the First Round
proper of the F.A Cup, where they met Oldham Athletic and went down 2-0 to the side who were leading the old Football League Third Division at the time. In 1982, the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League merged to form the North West Counties Football League. The club were placed in Division One of the league but found life difficult, regularly ending up at the wrong end of the table. Their best season in Division One came in 1984/85 when they reached the F.A Cup 4th Qualifying Round losing to Penrith after extra time 2-3, Penrith went on to face Burnley at Turf Moor in the next round. The side also reached the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup but lost out to local rivals Marine 1-2. The Squirrels were eventually relegated to Division Two of the league in 1986/87 but following a reorganization of the NWCL after a number of clubs left to join the Northern Premier League, the facilities at Brows Lane meant that Formby found themselves back in Division One for the 1987/88 season. However two years later they were relegated once again. The club ended a barren seventeen-year run without winning any silverware when they lifted the Lamot Pils Trophy in 1994/95 at Burscough's Victoria Park ground when they defeated eventual Division Two Champions Flixton by two goals to one in an exciting final. Formby completed a unique double in 2000/01 by becoming the first side to lift both North West Counties League, Cup Competitions.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
In Town Today . . . The Squirrels became the first Second Division side since 1987 to lift the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Challenge Cup) when, after a victories over fellow Division Two side Holker Old Boys, they beat four Division One clubs Salford City, Cheadle Town, Fleetwood and Kidsgrove Athletic. In the final at Bury’s Gigg Lane ground a thrilling game ended 1-1 after extra time when Leon Hymas gave Formby the lead only for Peter Carty to level the game shortly afterwards for Division One side Curzon Ashton. Formby went on to win 5-3 on pens. Following years of speculation, the club left their Brows Lane home in the summer of 2002 to relocate to a purpose built ground near the Formby by-pass in Altcar Road. However, the move was not without its problems as the club was thrown out of the North West Counties Football League, as the ground wasn't finished by the required deadline. Formby were forced to compete in the Liverpool County Combination League, which they last graced some 34 years previously, while they brought the ground up to the standard required by the North West Counties League. Formby’s last game at Brows Lane was played on 16th April 2002 and ended with a 4-1 win over Daisy Hill with Paul Gray scoring the last ever goal at the ground with two minutes remaining. They were exiled to the Liverpool County Combination for one season as following various ground improvements, the Squirrels were re-elected to the North West Counties League 2nd Division for the start of the 2003/4 campaign.
Formby immediately proved themselves to be one of the stronger teams in the Division and challenged at the top for the whole season. 2003/04 ended with some disappointment, as a final home defeat denied Formby runners-up spot in the NWCL Division Two, but the changes in the non-league pyramid over the summer meant that third place was good enough to regain their Division One status just one season after returning from the Liverpool County Combination. Formby struggled during their first season back in the top flight but showed grit and determination and some great form at the tail end of the season saw them avoid finishing in the relegation places. 2005/6 saw the Squirrels survive in Division One despite finishing bottom thanks to the UniBond League expansion The following year was a struggle both on and off the pitch. Good form late in the season could not stop them finishing in the relegation places but thanks to another UniBond expansion only Stone Dominoes were relegated and saw Formby reprieved for the 2nd time. Formby had an excellent 2007/8 season ending up in 13th position and advanced to the FA Vase 4th Round, 2008/9 season saw the club have a mixed season before finally finishing in 15th position. A poor start to the season has seen Formby lose six of their first nine league matches and early exits in both the FA Cup & Vase cost Tony Martin his job with Mark Maddox his replacement.

Vodkat League News Paul Schofield Resigns It is with regret that Silsden AFC have accepted the resignation of First Team Manager Paul Schofield. This comes on the back of the departure of his assistant, Dave Morgan, to take up the reins at Thackley FC. Sean Airey and Matthew Morgan have also left to join Dave. In the meantime Chris Reape has taken over the running of the Silsden first team with immediate effect. Paul has been with the club for over ten years as a player and coach. He was instrumental in the conception of the Under 19s team and moved up to manage the first team following the departure of Andy Geary. Geary’s successful period at the club was unprecedented and a difficult act to follow but Paul, through tremendous enthusiasm, energy and commitment has seen the club continue to progress year on year. For Paul to maintain our position and progression in semi-pro football, with very little budget, is credit to his efforts. Paul took over the first team at a difficult time when the team that had been built up over the previous five years was beginning to break up. In a short period, the first team lost a number of quality players. Paul himself has brought in players of the calibre of Sean Airey, Harry Thompson, and Danny McNulty through the club’s youth policy, along with the more recent additions of the likes of Lewis Barker and Rob Barraclough. Everyone at the club wish Paul all the best and, when he has recharged his batteries, hope to see him involved in the club in some capacity for many years to come. He has too much experience and great qualities to be lost to the club. New Set Of Wheels For Rob St Helens Town striker Rob Hanley was the first beneficiary of Town's new sponsorship deal which sees the Player of the Month given a new car to drive for a week.
In his first month of competitive football for his new side, Rob scored two goals on his debut and featured in every game. In total during the month he bagged six goals in seven matches, including two against Colwyn Bay in the FA Cup ensuring Town's progression to the qualifying stages. As part of the Johnsons Toyota Liverpool sponsorship of Town's 'Player of the Month' award, each monthly winner gets to choose any brand new Toyota which they will drive away for an all-expenses paid week. Rob is pictured above with Toyota Liverpool
General Sales Manager Gareth Shone, collecting the keys to his brand new Toyota Auris.

Around The Grounds Llanelian Road – Colwyn Bay A ground I was surprised to discover wasn’t actually in Colwyn Bay, but the town of Old Colwyn that lies right next to Colwyn Bay. Not the most
interesting of all facts there but a true one none the less. Llanelian Road is a superb little ground for a non league side, set at the foot of a hill with some terrific scenic views it caters for everybody’s football viewing tastes. One side of the ground compromises a terraced standing area that gives an elevated view of the action should you choose to stand on the top “step”, whilst the other side offers covered seating and standing room should the North Wales weather live up to its reputation. There is also covered standing offered behind the goal at one end whilst the clubhouse end is the location for, well, I’ll leave you to work that one out yourself. As non league clubhouses go it’s a stunning example, spacious and often full on a matchday with a good selection of drinks available for purchase. The ground also features a club shop, although I never ventured into it so wouldn’t know what it was like on the inside.
The fact that the touchlines are also up close to the perimeter fence allows you to really feel part of the action, I’ve been to many a worse Unibond League ground than this and its one of the better ones I’ve been to on this seasons travels. Well worth a visit of you are ever in the area.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Town History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several
reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following
season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.
Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years.
Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing
only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence.
The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Town History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bick-erstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the
last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wem-bley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game.
St. Helens Town boast an im-pressive “Hall of Fame”, includ-ing legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glitter-ing career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely res-cued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad mem-ber in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included Eric Moore (Everton), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal-scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase win-ning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.
There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the
guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future.

Town Pen Pictures Graeme McCall; Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He
retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause

Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.
Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
E-Programme a First for Saints St. Helens Town have launched an electronic version of their matchday programme. It is intended the 'e-Programme' will be made available a few days after each home fixture and will be in addition to the full colour printed programme available on match days at Knowsley Road. Chairman John McKiernan said, 'Apart from the 'glossy' covers the programme is designed, edited and printed completely in-house to keep the costs to a minimum. In a start to the season where home attendances have exceeded expectations with our first three games seeing average gates of 160 it's been difficult to gauge programme numbers. 'At our last home game we sold three times the amount of programmes compared with the total number sold in the previous two visits of Newcastle Town. And we could have sold more.' 'No club wants to miss out on programme sales and more importantly the opportunity to get information to supporters. However, a club cannot afford to over estimate programme numbers and be left with too many spares.
'I regard the 'e-Programme' as an opportunity for fans who miss a game or who follow from a far, sponsors and potential sponsors to keep up-to-date with club news and see the quality of the programme available on match days.' John added, 'Whilst nothing can compare to the real thing, there's a nice feel to the e-Programme with the ability to flip pages just as you would with a 'printed' programme, with the option to click on the bottom right hand corner of each page. You can also zoom in and out of all the pages. 'The real bonus is that the process of creating the electronic version is free and our 52 pages only took a few minutes. The publication is then available on the internet and there's no need for hosting large files.'

Vodkat League News NEW MARATHON TARGET FOR ASHLEY Leek CSOB midfielder Ashley Flood is eyeing up his next sporting challenge after successfully completing his first marathon in Berlin on the 20th September. Ashley completed the race in a time of 3 hours 31 minutes and 37 seconds – a very creditable time for someone competing in their first marathon. But as Ashley explained, it certainly wasn’t an easy afternoon. “It turned out to be a lovely sunny day in Berlin and the temperatures hit 28 degrees”, he said. “No one expected it to be as warm as that, not even the race winner, the Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie. “He is the world record holder, and because Berlin is known as being a flat marathon route, he was being tipped to beat his own world record. But even he said afterwards the heat had affected him.” Aside of the heat, Ashley had his own battle to fight as the race entered the latter stages. “I was pretty much OK up until about the 22 mile mark, and then I hit “the wall”. My legs just about went, and although I managed to keep going I did slow down a bit from then until I crossed the finishing line.” “There was an after race party in Berlin in the evening, and a few of us went out for an hour or so, but we were all too tired to really be in the mood for partying so it wasn’t long before we were heading back to the hotel to get to bed.” Thanks to sponsorship from friends and family, Ashley raised £325 for Cancer Research, and is now planning another marathon in the New Year. “The plan at the moment is that I will compete in the Rome Marathon in March next year. I’ll have a month or so off now from running and concentrate on football, and then start training again in November.” In the meantime, Ashley’s return to the Old Boys starting eleven was a successful one, as he helped his side to an 8-1 win over Ashton Town at the weekend. “It was certainly a good game to make a comeback in, and I was pleased with the way I lasted the pace. I was fine up until about the last ten minutes, and then my legs started to get a bit heavy. But another couple of games should see me OK”.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division match against Formby. May the travelling fans enjoy the match, but not the result. Well so much has happened since we were all last gathered here that I might struggle to fit it all into my one page of notes. The 2-2 draw with Atherton LR on this ground four weeks ago saw Town perform well on the night but a couple of mistakes cost the three points. Town looked the better footballing side on the night but had to come from behind twice in order to get the crucial league point. The following Saturday saw the end of St Helens Town’s FA Cup campaign for another season when the trip to Cammell Laird ended in a disappointing 1-3 defeat, Town never really played to their full potential and against higher league opposition it’s a necessity. Although the 10 minute spell where they were on top of their opponents gave a flavour of what Town could do, it just wasn’t enough to beat quality opposition. This game also saw the final performance in a Town shirt of Karl Ledsham, the attacking midfielder has moved on to Skelmersdale United with the clubs best wishes. The disappointing result in the cup was put to rights a week later when Town took on tonight’s visitors Formby and defeated them by the comfortable scoreline of 4-0. A two week break then followed due to cup fixtures for other sides and no midweek scheduled games before the trip to Wincham Park on Saturday gone saw a great come from behind victory against the Runcorn Linnets. Trailing from a penalty in the 4th minute a great goal from Marc Stephens sent the sides in level before a neat Graeme Mitchell
finish at the near post gave Town the victory. So results of late have gone quite well for Town and they will be hoping to continue this good run of form in tonight’s match. Formby provide the opposition and they will be looking to avenge the 0-4 reversal Town inflicted on them at their own ground last month. Changes have been afoot at Formby recently with the sacking of manager Tony Martin after six defeats in nine games. Mark Maddox has taken over the reigns there and will be in charge for tonight’s match. Maddox got his managerial reign off to a good start on Saturday when his Formby side defeated second bottom Ashton Athletic, he will obviously be looking to achieve a similar result tonight. A month’s break from home games and now we are back under the Knowsley Road lights. St Helens Town have had a 100% record in away games they’ve played so far this season and will now be looking to convert this form to their home matches. There is no better time to start than in tonight’s match so let’s get behind the players and hopefully cheer them on to victory. There has been a lot to smile about with St Helens Town lately with the club being in the best position they have been in for some time, lets hope we can all keep smiling after the result this evening. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind you.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Town News New President for Town Sunday 13 September, 10.00am and a telephone call 'out of the blue' for St. Helens Town Chairman John McKiernan. On the line, from his home in Spain, was former Town and Manchester City legend Bert Trautmann! John explained: 'I wrote to Bert a few weeks ago to thank him for the signed and framed photograph he'd donated to the club on his last visit to the UK, towards the end of last season. Bert had dinner with a couple of Town officials despite his very busy schedule and had shown a real interest in how the club was progressing.' 'As well a donating the photograph Bert signed a large number of Town and Manchester City items including, shirts, programmes and copies of his book which raised over a £1000 at Town's end of season awards ceremony.' 'At one of our recent committee meetings club officials decided we should approach Bert with an offer of him becoming our Honorary President alongside former Manchester United legend Bill Foulkes.' He added, 'Bert told me he was delighted with our offer and said it will be an honour to become the club's President, and of course this is fantastic news for St. Helens Town.' Next month will see the 60th Anniversary of Bert's departure from St. Helens Town where his performances enticed regular crowds over three thousand. He went on to become a footballing legend with Manchester City and Town are planning to hold at least two events during the season to commemorate this milestone. John said, 'I am due to meet with Manchester City officials next week as we discuss the details of a friendly fixture 'The Trautmann Trophy' against a Manchester City Legends side at the 'mini-stadium' adjacent to the City of Manchester Stadium.' 'The game will celebrate the anniversary and the long-standing connection between the two clubs with the monies raised hopefully benefiting both Town and the Trautmann
Foundation (see www.trautmann-foundation.org). The Foundation aims to provide young people with positive values with particular attention being given to those qualities that can change the world, and to embody the courage shown by Bert.' 'We are also planning a Celebration Dinner in February or March 2010 and are hopeful that Bert will be in attendance. The dinner will also coincide with the launch of Bert's new book 'Trautmann's Journey' which is due to be launched around the same time.'
'As with Bert's previous publication 'Trautmann: The Biography' his affinity with St. Helens, its people and its football club continues to shine though.'

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Match Report Saturday 3rd October 2009; Vodkat League Premier Division Runcorn Linnets 1-2 St Helens Town
Town overcame Runcorn Linnets and awful weather conditions to avenge last season’s
late, late loss at the same ground. The visitors had the worst possible start as an early
ball into the Town box struck Nick McLoughlin on the arm aided by the swirling wind and
Mr. Hayward pointed to the spot, former Town man Rob Whyte sent the ball to Graeme
McCall’s right but just far enough away from his grasp to net and put Runcorn into the
lead. Town battled back and spurned a chance when John Elias found Phil Mitchell with
an excellent diagonal ball this released him behind the full back but his first touch was
heavy and went behind for a goal kick.
The visitors levelled on 23 minutes when Marc Stephens tried his luck from 25 yards and
beat home stopper Robbie Holcroft with the aid of a slight deflection off Simon
Myerscough. Town with the wind at their backs tried to make the advantage pay as they dominated possession and attacked the hosts’ goal, Phil Mitchell had an effort from 20
yards which went just wide of the left hand post. Graeme Mitchell was next to have an
opening as he was found by brother Phil but the chance was lost when Myerscough
dispossessed him. Rob Hanley was next to be denied as he was found by player of the
month Elias and the strikers’ shot looked to be arrowing home Holcroft pulled a save out
of the top draw to tip over the bar. The half ended with Graeme Mitchell collecting the ball
on the edge of the area, turning and shooting wide of the right hand post so parity was
ensured at the interval.
The hosts may be been expecting an advantage in the second period with the wind at
their backs but the conditions did not suit their long ball game. Town had the first chance
of the half when a ball broke to Phil Mitchell on the edge of the box and his shot curled
wide of the apex of the post and crossbar. Paul Fildes latched onto a long ball on 54
minutes but when he found space he was thwarted by a good save from McCall. At the
other end Hanley was denied by the woodwork as his shot from an acute angle on the right hand side of the area beat Holcroft but rebounded off the left hand post. The visitors’
were denied a stonewall penalty on 65 minutes when Graeme Mitchell had his legs taken
from under him through on goal but he had the last laugh moments later as he put Town
into the lead trying an effort from the right of the area which struck the right post and
rolled along the line before nestling into the side netting on the left of the goal. The hosts
did not threaten the visitors’ goal in the remaining stages of the game and the only
talking point of the final stages was a fracas after Phil Mitchell was kicked in the head
clearing a high ball which saw Runcorn skipper Steven Cunningham sent off and Town’s
Graeme McCall and Peter Birch booked. So Town left Northwich with all three points and
regained fifth position in the table leap-frogging above the hosts in the process.

Changes at AFC Fylde AFC Fylde have recently parted company with 1st Team Coach Colin Methven and Assistant Manager Paul Eastwood. Chairman Dai Davis stated “Both Colin and Paul have been wonderful servants to the club and it is with regret we have had to take this decision. They can leave the club with their heads held high after some fantastic achijevements both as players and managers. We felt a change to the management structure was needed and this move was in the best interests of the club going forward.” Former Blackpool FC and Wigan Athletic defender Methven has been with the club for since the mid 90’s joining first as a player then as Coach to assist Mick Fuller in a successful era through the West Lancashire League, North West Counties Leagues and their FA Vase win in May 2008. 34 year old Eastwood, Club Captain in their Kirkham and Wesham days joined the club in the 2001-2002 season from Fulwood Amatuers and after leading the team to numerous successes he retired from playing after the FA Vase final to take an Assistant role to Fuller for their assault on the Vodkat Premier Division last season. The club is now looking to recruit a new 1st Team coach to assist Fuller in their
inaugural season in the UniBond 1st Division North after the club’s indifferent start to the 2009-2010 campaign. Points Deductions for Two Clubs Following a UniBond League meeting last Sunday First Division North clubs Curzon Ashton and Harrogate Railway Athletic both had three points deducted from their playing records for fielding ineligible players in their wins against Harrogate Railway Athletic and AFC Fylde respectively. Both players were regulars with their clubs last season but had not been registered for the current campaign when they made their first appearances this term. The points deductions will not be shown in the league tables until the fourteen day time period allowed for any appeals has elapsed

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
St. Helens Town AFC – Hall of Fame: Bert Trautmann
Tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of the transfer of Town legend Bert Trautmann
to Manchester City (Bert pictured below with former City ‘keeper Frank Swift).
Now in his 86th year, Bernhard Carl Trautmann was born in Walle, near Bremen,
Germany on 22nd October 1923 and upon leaving school, he became an
apprentice motor mechanic. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1941 as a radio operator,
eventually becoming a paratrooper, winning 5 medals, including an Iron Cross
(First Class) on the Eastern Front, but having transferred to the Western Front,
was captured by the British in 1944, seeing out the remainder of the War in
prison camps in Northwich and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Whilst at Ashton, he played
in football matches, initially as an outfield player, but following an injury, went in
goal, where his all-round athletic abilities allowed his career to blossom.
In 1948, having declined an offer of repatriation, he
began playing for St. Helens Town and quickly
earned a reputation as a goalkeeper of rare talent,
attracting interest from several Football League
clubs. His brief career with Town began with a
home game against South Liverpool in the Liverpool
County Combination on 28th August 1948. On his
third appearance, it was reported that “very
sportingly the Skelmersdale supporters gave
Trautmann a wonderful reception.”
Later in the year, the club secretary, John Friar,
proclaimed in his programme notes “To put your
minds at rest again, I am pleased to inform you
that B. Trautmann is Not leaving Sutton. As I have
told you before, his whole interests are in the Town
Club and he is more than happy with us. But he
has been granted leave to visit his parents. He will
be going early in the New Year and we shall lose his services for a matter of three
matches.” Such was the town’s affection for Bert that they sent him on his way
with a large food hamper and a considerable sum of cash, which was an
overwhelming gesture of kindness not lost on Bert and, indeed, his family at such
a difficult time in Germany’s history.
On Bert’s return, he assisted Town to success in the George Mahon Cup
competition, his and the club’s first trophy. Runcorn were beaten in the Final at
Prescot before a crowd of 9000. As the 1949/50 season opened, with Town in the
Lancashire Combination, Second Division, the pressures on St. Helens to part with
their star player became ever stronger and a transfer to Manchester City was
agreed, but deferred until Town’s elimination from the FA Cup. That occurred on
1st October 1949 when Town lost 0-3 to Bangor City and the transfer was
completed the following Thursday. Bert had played 43 games for St. Helens
Town, but he returned on three subsequent occasions, twice for friendly matches

All Our Yesterdays with Manchester City and once to marry the secretary’s daughter! Bert’s debut for
City came in a game with Bolton Wanderers on 15th October. There were mass
protests over his signing by the citizens of Manchester, who had suffered so much
at the hands of the Germans in the War. However, the affable keeper did not take
long to win over the hearts of the City fans and any hostility soon melted away.
He went on to make 508 League appearances for the Maine Road club in a 15-year
career, culminating in a testimonial game which attracted a crowd of over 47,000.
The game for which Bert is best remembered is the 1956 FA Cup Final against
Birmingham City. The Sky Blues won 3-1, but Bert broke his neck when caught by
a stray boot and bravely played on for the remaining fifteen minutes. The extent
of his injury was only confirmed some days later. Honours continued to flow for
Bert, selected twice for The Football League and he was the worthy recipient
of the FWA’s Footballer of the Year
Trophy in 1956.
After retirement as a player, Bert
became manager of Stockport
County, subsequently managing
two teams in his native Germany
and completing his career in charge
of Burma, Liberia and Pakistan. He
was awarded an honorary OBE in
2004 for his services to Anglo-
German relations through football –
his Trautmann Foundation is a
charitable trust set up to raise
funds to foster that aim – and the
following year, he was inducted into
the National Football Museum’s Hall
of Fame. Bert has for many years
lived in Spain, but still visits
England, and we hope he is able to
attend the inaugural Trautmann
Trophy game next month in
Manchester, when Town take on a
City Legends side.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Saints Alive . . . After sixty years of marriage, a Yorkshire man’s wife sadly passes away. He wants a headstone to be in place before the funeral, but just cannot think of a suitable inscription. “How about something short yet meaningful,” suggests the stonemason. “The epitaph ‘She was thine’ is always popular.” “Why that one?” asks the husband. “Well, she was with you for sixty years, so she was yours,” replies the stonemason. Taken with this suggestion, the husband agrees and gives the go-ahead. The day before the funeral he goes to check the plot and finds the headstone in place, but is shocked to read the words ‘She was thin’.
Distraught, he rushes round to the stonemason and plays hell. “Don’t worry,” says the stonemason. “I’ll send my lad round straight away to add the ‘e’.” Come the funeral, the husband is inconsolable and cannot understand why people are pointing and laughing. Then he notices the headstone, which now reads ‘E She was thin’. A man decides to enter for ITV’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ and, having passed the auditions, is invited to appear on the show. The big night arrives and Matthew Kelly welcomes him on stage for the customary chat before asking, “Who are you going to be for us tonight?” “Tonight, Matthew,” he announces, pausing for maximum effect, “I am going to be Glenn Miller.” He turns, walks through the mist-shrouded doors, and is never seen again.
(Younger readers should find a responsible adult over 40 years old to explain this joke!) Four Catholic ladies are having coffee together, and are discussing how important their sons have become in their chosen careers. “My son is a priest,” announces the first woman to her friends. “And when he walks into a room everyone calls him ‘Father’.” The second Catholic woman chirps up, “Well, my son is a bishop, and when he walks into a room everyone refers to him as ‘Your Grace’.” Looking smug the third Catholic woman says, “Well, not to put you down, but my son is a cardinal, and when he walks into a room he is addressed as ‘Your Eminence’.” The fourth Catholic woman sips her coffee in silence. The other three women throw her an impatient look as a satisfied smile spreads across her face. “My son is a very gorgeous, 6'-2", hard-bodied, male stripper,” she announces. “When he walks into a room, people stop dead and gasp, ‘Oh my God’.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd. If you have any printable jokes you would like to share with your fellow supporters, please e-mail them to me on john@behindtheflag.co.uk Come on, let’s all have a laugh.
