S.O.S. Spanish Office Showroom
As part of the SPAIN arts & culture program, S.O.S. Spanish Office Show-room presents the most avant-garde pieces of Spanish design conceived for modern working environments. This exhibition highlights how the cre-ativity of contemporary Spanish design-ers adapts itself to any office space, and further showcases the international presence of Spanish design companies in competitive markets, such as those of the United States. Many firms have collaborated with Spanish designers to produce these distinctive and practical pieces and assure their availability to the American public. This exhibit fea-tures just a sample of the products and designs available.

With this exhibit, the Embassy opens the second floor to the public for the first time since the Am-bassador’s residence moved to Foxhall Road. This new exhibit features a fine selection of workplace furniture, light fixtures, and other complementary of-fice pieces, representing both superb design and functionality. The Showroom gives visitors a chance to see an example of the high-quality Spanish products available within the
US including, but not limited to, free-standing lamps, light fixtures, desks, chairs, shelves and other furniture items. All items on display in this unique DC historic space will improve any working environment and may be easily shipped within the US.
As the backdrop to these inspired designs, the former Spanish Ambas-sador’s Residence in Washington will host the S.O.S. Spanish Office Show-room. Not only was the mansion built by the wife of the senator who intro-duced the 13th Amendment abolish-ing slavery, it was intended to be the Vice Presidential Residence and would house the ambassador of Spain for some sixty years. Despite the difficult economic times, Spain continues to give birth to new and more talented creators. In the designer home furnishings and office equipment sectors, Spain is one of the world lead-ers, distinguishing itself by providing a wide range of reasonably priced, func-tional and beautiful products. The works featured in this exhibition have been conceived by well-known
Spanish designers and produced by top-notch Spanish companies, lead-ers in the office furniture sector. The possibilities of these pieces are end-less, from the most sophisticated and luxurious craftsmanship, to efficient and pragmatic proposals, as well as avant-garde experiments.The Spain USA Foundation commis-sioned Spanish designer and architect
S.O.S. Spanish Office Showroom provides a compositional coher-ence, where together the individual pieces create a harmonic “working landscape.” Not only is this an ideal venue to encourage cultural proj-ects, but it is an inspiring framework for a new understanding of the work-place as a flexible space for human interaction.

BD Barcelona Design was founded in 1972 as BD Ediciones de Diseño by the architects and interior de-signers Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluis Clotet, Mireia Riera and Oscar Tusquets. Its catalogue has products designed by some of the most recognized designers worldwide, both contemporary such as Alfredo Häberli, Jaime Hayon, Konstantin Grcic or Ross Lovegrove, or historical such as Antoni Gaudí or Salvador Dalí. It has been awarded with the Premio Nacional de Diseño in 1989, the European Community Design Prize in 1990, and the Red Dot Design Award “best of the best” in 2011. Since October 2011 there is a new showroom-gallery in Barcelona.
