So…

Oh yeah, I'll tell you somethingI think you'll understand,When I say that something,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand.

Oh please say to meYou'll let me be your man,And please say to me,You'll let me hold your hand,Now let me hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside,It's such a feeling That my love I can't hide,I can't hide, I can't hide.

Yeah you got that something,I think you'll understand,When I say that something,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside,It's such a feeling That my love I can't hide,I can't hide, I can't hide.

Yeah you got that something,I think you'll understand,When I feel that something,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand,I wanna hold your hand.

“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” Written by John Lennon & Paul

McCartney Performed by The Beatles

Just gonna stand thereAnd watch me burnBut that's alrightBecause I likeThe way it hurtsJust gonna stand thereAnd hear me cryBut that's alrightBecause I loveThe way you lieI love the way you lieI love the way you lie

I can't tell you what it really isI can only tell you what it feels likeAnd right now there's a steel knifeIn my windpipeI can't breatheBut I still fightWhile I can fightAs long as the wrong feels rightIt's like I'm in flightHigh of a loveDrunk from the hateIt's like I'm huffing paintAnd I love it the more that I sufferI suffocate

And right before I’m about to drownShe resuscitates meShe f------ hates meAnd I love itWaitWhere you goingI'm leaving youNo you ain'tCome backWe're running right backHere we go againIt's so insane

Cause when it's going goodIt's going greatI'm SupermanWith the wind in his bagShe's Lois Lane

But when it's badIt's awfulI feel so ashamedI snapWho's that dudeI don't even know his nameI laid hands on herI'll never stoop so low againI guess I don't know my own strength

Just gonna stand thereAnd watch me burnBut that's alrightBecause I likeThe way it hurtsJust gonna stand thereAnd hear me cryBut that's alrightBecause I loveThe way you lieI love the way you lieI love the way you lie

Written and Performed by Eminem, featuring Rihanna

I'm in love alright, with my crazy beautiful life.

With the parties, the disasters, with my friends all pretty and plastered.

Every night we're down to go out,

Waking up on a different couch.

Till the next night, on the next flight.

Yeah, I guess we're doing alright.

Oh oh oh

We're falling in love

Oh oh oh

Till the sun's comin' up.

Oh oh oh

Just livin' the life Oh oh oh

“Crazy Beautiful Love”

tell myself on the ride home, getting tired of hating all I’ve known, holding on like its all i have, count me out when its clear that i,find it hard to say,and you find it hard to care...

i wanted to see something that’s different, something you said would change in me,wanted to be anything different, everything you would change in me...

got this way up front but never true, god I’m wrong is this the way i am,crashing down any chance of it,caving in any chance that you,can see inside of me,and i i'll know what to say,its fine this isn’t Hollywood,so fine getting in your way...

I wanted to see something that’s different, something you said would change in me,wanted to be anything different, everything you would change in me...

I’m taking a chance,this could be different,this could be all I’m waiting for,taking a chance,this could be different,this could be all I’m waiting for...

i wanted to see something that’s different, something you said would change in me,wanted to be anything different, everything you would change in me...

Is this poetry?

How about this?

Is this poetry?

“Tough Boy Sonatas” By Curtis L.

Crisler

Listen. Is this poetry?

No really, Ms. G…

…’cuz we’re kind of ready to take some notes now.

What is poetry? Poetry is a short literary art in which

language is used to evoke emotion or tell a story.

Because it is so short….○ Rich with language and emotion○ Each word carries more weight

Learning the key elements of poetry can unlock some of its mystery, and help interpret the meaning of different types of poems.

Form Speaker Sound Imagery Figurative Language

FORM The way a poem looks on the page is called its form. Poems are written in lines, which may or may not be complete sentence. In some forms of poetry, lines are grouped into stanzas.

If lines in a stanza have a regular, repeated pattern, the poem has a structured form. Poems that have no regular pattern are called free verse poems

SPEAKER The speaker of the poem is the voice

that relates the story or ideas of the poem. The speaker may be the poet, speaking directly to the reader, or the speaker may be a character or voice created by the poet.

The voice may include the use of dialect, a form of language spoken in a certain place by a certain group of people. The poet may also use idioms to make the speaker’s voice more realistic.

SOUND

Because most poems are meant to be read aloud, poets choose and arrange words to create sounds that appeal to the listener.

Four techniques that poets use to create sound are rhyme, rhythm, repetition, and onomatopoeia.

IMAGERY Imagery is language that appeals

to the reader’s five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Writers often use imagery to draw readers into a scene.

Think about the phrase “feather clouds” or “blistering sands.” Do the images remind you of places you’ve been or experiences you’ve had?

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Writers may use figurative

language when they choose words and phrases that help readers picture ordinary things in new ways.

We will focus on four main types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, analogy, and personification.

Reading Poetry

Reading poetry can move us from laughter to tears. Why? Because many poems are written to express emotion. To understand the effect of a poem, pay attention to the elements of form, sound, speaker, imagery, and figurative language.

The Tropics of New York by Claude McKay

Bananas ripe and green, and ginger root Cocoa in pods and alligator pears,And tangerines and mangoes and grape fruit, Fit for the highest prize at parish fairs,

Sat in the window, bringing memories of fruit-trees laden by low-singing rills,And dewy dawns, and mystical skies In benediction over nun-like hills.

My eyes grow dim, and I could no more gaze; A wave of longing through my body swept,And, hungry for the old, familiar ways I turned aside and bowed my head and wept.
