AMERICAN ARRIVAL The African slaves were then sent to various parts of the colonies to perform hard manual labor. Work and treatment varied according to where the slaves were sent.

Slaves worked on farming estates called plantations.

The majority of slaves worked in the fields but SOME worked in the house for the slave-owner.

Slave food? While house slaves mainly ate leftovers from the master ; the field slaves created dishes from the leftover scraps of the animals used.

SLAVE MARRIAGESlaves were encouraged to be married because

it would make them less likely to run away .

Slave marriages however WERE NOT official or legal. They were more so committed relationships.

The traditional “broom jumping” is STILL practiced by African Americans to THIS very day.

NO LITERACY!!!!SLAVES were not permitted to know

how to read and write. If they were caught trying to learn, they could be severely punished.

However, some found ways to LEARN anyway!!!

birthday because it was unknown to him; as well as all other slaves.

Slaves had more rights than those in the South and some were set free after serving a certain time.

MIDDLE COLONIES In 1991 skeletal

remains of slaves were found deep under the ground in New York City by construction workers.

Forensic scientists concluded that the slaves had been worked to death.

FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW

Blacks were NOT COMPLETELY SAFE in the New England Colonies.

Federal Law required ANY runaway slave (found in northern states) BE RETURNED to the south and placed back into slavery.

JUST IMAGINE…. Suppose you were mistreated, abused,

and held captive by your guardian BUT you managed to runaway to an area that they can’t find you.

BUT…

People around you want to take you back, so they can get reward money.

OR IMAGINE you were already living as a

FREE Black man/woman in the North

BUT……

Someone wants to earn reward money and kidnaps you in hopes to hand you over to the law
