SLAVE MARRIAGE

Page 62: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

SLAVE MARRIAGESlaves were encouraged to be married because

it would make them less likely to run away .

Slave marriages however WERE NOT official or legal. They were more so committed relationships.

The traditional “broom jumping” is STILL practiced by African Americans to THIS very day.

NO LITERACY!!!!SLAVES were not permitted to know

how to read and write. If they were caught trying to learn, they could be severely punished.

However, some found ways to LEARN anyway!!!

Page 67: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

FREDERICK DOUGLASS Born into slavery, but managed to become literate on his own and wrote THREE autobiographies.

Page 68: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

He CHOSE the NAME Douglass after a character in a book he read while he was free.

MIDDLE COLONIESSlaves in this region were skilled in

various trades.

Slaves worked in factories and did construction instead of being in fields.

Slaves had more rights than those in the South and some were set free after serving a certain time.

Page 84: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

MIDDLE COLONIES In 1991 skeletal

remains of slaves were found deep under the ground in New York City by construction workers.

FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW

Blacks were NOT COMPLETELY SAFE in the New England Colonies.

Federal Law required ANY runaway slave (found in northern states) BE RETURNED to the south and placed back into slavery.

Page 102: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES
Page 103: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

JUST IMAGINE…. Suppose you were mistreated, abused,

and held captive by your guardian BUT you managed to runaway to an area that they can’t find you.

BUT…

People around you want to take you back, so they can get reward money.

Page 104: SLAVERY IN THE COLONIES

OR IMAGINE you were already living as a

FREE Black man/woman in the North

BUT……

Someone wants to earn reward money and kidnaps you in hopes to hand you over to the law
