Sidney Crosby to play for Canada at World HockeyChampionship

For the first time in nine years, SidneyCrosby will suit up for Team Canada at theWorld Hockey Championship.

Hockey Canada announced Sunday the Pittsburgh Penguins captain will compete in this year'stournament in the Czech Republic. It will be his first world championship appearance since thecompletion of his rookie NHL season in 2006.

Deep post-season runs and injuries had prevented Crosby from joining Canada's roster in the past.He was made available this spring after his Pens were eliminated by the New York Rangers onFriday in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series.

Crosby led the '06 tournament in scoring, tallying 16 points in nine games, but came away empty-handed as Canada fell 5-0 to Finland in the bronze-medal game.

Canada hasn't won a world championship since 2007 and has failed to reach the podium in the pastfive tournaments.

The world championship begins May 1 with the gold-medal game to be played May 17.

Crosby has won two Olympic gold medals with Canada at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Games.
