COCHABAMBA, BOLIVIA
“Oral Health Training in Bolivia:Increasing the Opportunity for Young Women Living in Poverty”(Special Topic, Dental Hygiene 292: 3 credits)
The Course This course emphasizes teaching basic and significant dental care to indigenous people through a service learning activity which is facilitated by Smiles Forever.
This course explores dental disease (both periodontal and rampant caries) and the practice of dental hygiene on a global scale, en-hancing the student’s perspective on how to teach essential hand skills in an environment without normal equipment available, teaching home care skills to people living in poverty and an awareness of dental health issues in an impoverished environment.
By immersing the student in a Latino culture, they will come back with an enhanced ability to relate to and work with another culture and different situations.
The ExperienceOur time in Cochabamba will include visiting and work-ing with the first and only, newly developed dental hygiene school in Bolivia, Smiles Forever Dental Hygiene School. The PartnerSmiles Forever Foundation is a nonprofit organization, based in Seattle, Washington with a training facility and clinic based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Humanitarian dental relief programs already exist in Bolivia that provides emergency dental care for shelter residents. Smiles Forever
STUDY ABROAD AT SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEGEA leader in providing community college study abroad programs
Shoreline Community College provides equal opportunity in education and employment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, color, religion,
national origin, marital status, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
is unique in that it offers homeless young indigenous women an opportunity to learn a skill (dental hygiene) which allows them to utilize their newly learned skills to support themselves and their families and contribute to their community where the need for preventive dentistry is so great.
Smiles Forever Foundation’s philosophy is that it is im-portant to invest in programs that are culturally sensitive to educate and encourage the population to develop and value for their own country. Rather than accept patch-work humanitarianism as the solution to global problems,
Smiles For-ever believes that the only way to really break the cycle of poverty in developing nations such as Bolivia is through education.
Two Bolivian schoolgirls are all smiles as they show off their new toothbrushes.
The ServiceShoreline’s Special Topics class, Dental Hygiene, (ST 292) provides a perfect vehicle for the explora-tion of how simple dental hygiene practices can make a difference in impoverished communities.
Students will organize and conduct an outreach community service project to provide information and education on basic dental homecare preven-tion to improve basic health; they will work one-on-one with a Bolivian dental hygiene student on instrumenta-tion techniques; train students in new procedures with enamel sealant materials and placement and fluoride varnish applica-tion techniques, which with little cost would dra-matically reduce decay.
The participants will experience firsthand this unique humanitarian model and see the impact of social, economic, political and environmental forces that determine the quality of life for people in impoverish communities.
The students will gain the ability to transfer learned skills from their experience.
Smiles Forever students provide oral hygiene care education to Bolivian school children.
