That Entrepreneurial Spirit in the local area!
First thing Wednesday morning on 11 May 2016, Mr Alan Bullen of Lynx Networks came into
school to meet a group of our Year 9 V-Cert in Business students. They were well prepared
with a list of interesting and insightful questions, grilling him about his business, how he
started and how he would like to develop it further in the future.
Alan spoke with passion about his own entrepreneurial skills and highlighted confidence, risk
evaluation and his ability to learn about the ever-developing applications of technology
relating to IT networks and associated products. He emphasised the importance of customer
satisfaction for the success of his business and the value of teamwork in getting the most
out of the people he employs.
Alan’s first entrepreneurial venture, at the age of 18, was a mobile disco which gave him
some useful business experience. After 12 years learning his technical and management skills
working in the IT industry, he felt it was time to take a calculated risk and set up his own
business - Lynx Networks. This involved borrowing £10,000 from the bank and using his
family home as security. He set up initially as a Sole Trader, progressed into a Partnership
and then as he became increasingly successful (and his turnover grew) he opted to register
as limited company. He still has a target to exploit new markets and increase his turnover
before he takes a back seat and lets someone else run the company.
As a Managing Director and part-owner of the company, Alan has a certain amount of
flexibility and independence in his main job, so he is also a great supporter of local charitable
organisations and champions a range of business and entrepreneurial activities to enthuse
the next generation of young businessmen and businesswomen.
Many thanks to Alan for sparing the time to come into school and share his valuable life
experiences.
If there is anyone else out there who would like to come in to talk about their job, please get
in contact with the Director of Business, Enterprise and Work Related Learning,
DGreenhalgh@sbeschool.org.uk or phone 01908 520264 Ext 267.
Sixth Form Debating Club
Last week’s debate dealt with achievements, influence and creativity within the music
industry, with the motion; ‘This House Believes 50 Cent
is a better artist than Beyoncé’.
Ajay Sisodiya, a self-professed fan of 50 Cent, the man
and the music, proposed the motion. He began his
speech with the rags to riches story, telling how 50 Cent
turned his life around, despite a disadvantaged and
criminal childhood, involving murder, drugs and being
shot.
His experiences were transformed through his music, showing both creativity and ambition,
winning him awards and influence, which he used to found various charities for disadvantaged
young people in America. Ajay argued that 50 Cent has not lost sight of his roots and makes
his music accessible to all, working tirelessly as a producer, singer/songwriter, performer
and actor.
Karen Dadey championed Beyoncé, suggesting that as an artist she has mass appeal
ages, all cultures and across a variety of musical tastes. This is reflected in the sales of her
music. She collaborates with others, but also writes her own m
routines and has won many more awards than 50 Cent, recognised by the public and by the
industry, as a legend and superstar.

Once again, the audience returned a split decision, both speakers receiving 24 votes, with
only 8 abstentions. The committee came down in favour o

McGregor. Lauren has been a library
assistant for over four and a half years,
since she joined the school in Year 7, and
whilst Callum had a short break to focus on
other commitments, he has served for
almost as long.
We rely on our band of student library assistants to ensure the smooth running of the
library at break and lunch times, and the students themselves learn valuable transferable
skills, staffing the library desk, using the database and gaining confidence in offering advice
on research and reading materials. We would like to take this opportunity to
and Callum for their continued hard work and commitment to the library, and to wish them
well in their future endeavours.
Good luck to all of our students in their forthcoming examinations.

Big congratulations to the Year 9 rounders team who performed triumphantly in the Milton

ICT News
Year 7:
Year 7 students are working through the ‘Combination’ unit. This unit consists of
Spreadsheet skills and PowerPoint skills in order to complete a project. Students will be
learning how to use the software and then combining work from a Spreadsheet into a
PowerPoint presentation.
A home learning assignment has been set for students on Moodle to complete which will be
due in before half term. If students have issues at home with Moodle and the home learning
assignment tasks they should take a screenshot of the problem to enable us to rectify it,
preferably well in advance of the deadline. Alternatively Miss Cotgrove runs a support
session in ICT3 on Monday lunchtimes in order to answer questions and to allow students to
work on this assignment. In addition Student Services run support sessions in ICT4 on a
Tuesday and a Thursday if students are unable to access this at home. Students should also
see their class teacher about any difficulties they may have with the home learning
assignments.
Year 8:
Year 8 students are working through the ‘Networking and Website’ unit of work. This
involves learning about computer networking as well as how to construct a website using
WebPlus. This unit will involve planning, designing and making graphics ready to feature on a
website for an end user.

Year 9 ECDL
Students are working through the Excel unit for the ECDL qualification. This involves looking
at how to navigate spreadsheets and include formulas to calculate values.
If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact Miss Cotgrove or
your child’s class teacher.
Year 10 iMedia
Students have been gaining practice in their lessons ready for the next task in their
coursework which will be to design a graphic for an end user. This will include the use of
asset tables and identifying audience needs. Deadlines for this unit are shown in the table.
It is important that students stick to these deadlines due to tight turn round of marking,
extensions will only be given in exceptional circumstances.
Deadline dates are released early so that if a student is away on a trip they need to wor
around this to ensure their deadline is still met. Requests for extensions should be discussed
well before the deadline, please contact me
Submissions will take place via a Moodle assignment hand in point.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Over the last month we have had more successes with our DofE Students taking part in their
practice expeditions for both Bronze and Silver Awards. Miss Thompson and Mr Martin
recently attended at Buckingham Palace to celebrate 60 years of DofE. While there it was
announced that Prince Phillip is gradually retiring from DofE now and the Earl of Wessex,
Prince Edward, is going to lead it. The award will continue to be known as the Duke of
Edinburgh Award.
