The list of applicationsfor temperature probes and pressure sen-sors is almost endless. A few examples: Compressors in refrige-rating machines and air conditioning sys-tems are among the major consumers ofelectricity in building automation and re-frigeration technology. For several years,JUMO has been supplying vibration-resis-tant pressure sensors for these applicati-ons to optimize their operation andincrease their efficiency. Suitably certifiedversions are available for applications inutility vehicles, trains and cogenerationunits. Special designs in compliance withthe EHEDG guidelines for hygienic designare used in the food and beverages indus-try. Water analysisWater is the oil of the 21st century evenif that sounds strange to Central Europe-ans. If you have ever turned on a tap inShanghai or Mumbai, you will know whatwe are talking about let alone thedrought areas of the world. At JUMO, thepath from yesterdays glass thermometersto todays measuring cells for pH value(also made of glass) or for conductivityleads straight to treatment plants fordrinking water throughout the world. Seawater desalinization plants, pure and ul-trapure water for industrial processes inthe pharmaceutical or semiconductor in-
dustry are typical applications for JUMOsanalysis measurement technology.
Wireless with integrated power supply No cables please ... Wiring makes up alarge part of the installation costs. In de-centralized systems, for retrofitting, inbuilding automation or in mobile measu-ring systems, wireless measurementnetworks are an attractive solution. Theengineers dream of a world full of smart-dust seems so enticingly easy. However,wireless technology has not yet really ar-rived in measure-ment and controltechnology in thefield. JUMO was the firstmanufacturer tosuccessfully launchwireless and mo-bile temperature probes (Wtrans series).In the long term, development is towardslarger transmission ranges and integra-ted power supply. The subject of autono-mous sensor technology will keep usoccupied for a long time to come.
Simple and reliableEveryday work with sensor systems andmeasuring technology requires operatingreliability also enhanced by simplifiedoperation and handling. Sensors are ex-pected to operate long-term withoutmaintenance, adjustment or calibration.In practice, this is achieved by integratedfunctions such as self-monitoring, driftanalysis, and self-diagnosis. The objective: increased availability and
at the same time reduced costs for the in-dividual measuring point, when calculatedfor the entire operational life of the system.Maintenance is no longer performed ac-cording to a schedule but when required signaled by the probe of the future itself.
The future of sensor technologyWhen issues such as efficiency and sus-tainability become market drivers, the pri-mary development objectives speak forthemselves. Sensors have to become highlyintegrated, easy-to-handle measuring
modules thatcan be easily interlinked toform a network.It must also beeasy to adaptthem to the re-spective appli-
cations. Measuring accuracy and reliabilitycan be further improved by connectingthem to ASICs and microprocessors. Smartsensors, intelligent measuring units, canmonitor themselves and send status diagnoses to control systems. They sendtheir measured data via networks and cancommunicate parameters, calibration dataand status. Increased efficiency means more sensortechnology but, at the same time, reducedexpenditure for each measuring pointthroughout the entire operating life of thesystem.

All the necessary values forcalculation such as MTTfd, PFD, SSF, DC, dd, du in FIT, are made available in theusual way.
1oo2D structure for a high degree of process safety and reliabilityThe exacting requirements of DIN EN 61508and/or DIN EN 13849 are met by a deviceconcept, the 1oo2D structure of whichguarantees the reliable detection of faults,
allowing it to be used for applications sub-ject to the new Machinery Directive 2006 /42 / EC. During the design of the devices,particular emphasis was given to safetyand reliability, but also to ensuring thatcommissioning was as simple as possible.
LC display with background lightingThe luminous, clearly structured displaywith text display and background lightingin combination with the keypad ensuresfast and simple configuration directly atthe device. Dr. Gerhard Weiler: Mr. Nau, the creati-vity of the design engineers continues toproduce new probe designs. How manyspecial designs have been produced overthe years?Matthias Nau: In Fulda alone, we cur-rently have more than 25,000 differenttemperature probe versions. And we pro-duce around seven new versions everyday. They are not always completely newdesigns, but variants of existing designs.For example: When a customer is lookingfor a temperature probe to exactly matchhis application, we adapt a standard ver-sion. Even when it only involves a specialthread, a new version is created with itsown article number and set of documents.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: How much does thegrowth of the company depend on yourfocus on customer requirements?Matthias Nau: Customer focus is of keyimportance, particularly in the area oftemperature probes. Our main objective isto ensure complete customer satisfaction.So everything has to be just right. Ofcourse, this allows us to achieve a highlevel of customer loyalty and ensures thatcustomers frequently involve us with de-velopments in their new projects rightfrom the start. In this way, we can lay theright foundations at the beginning of thedesign stage. This ensures that the finis-hed product is tailored to the customersrequirements and is optimized for pro-duction. This results in a natural price/performance ratio that is transparent forboth sides.Dr. Gerhard Weiler: In which particularareas has JUMOs know-how developeddue to this strong engagement in specialdesigns?
Matthias Nau: Oh, in a large number ofareas. Ill give you two examples. We havedeveloped application-based casting andsealing techniques to reliably seal tempe-rature probes against water vapor andchanges in temperature, which is impor-tant for temperature probes used in steri-lization and foodstuffs. We have alsodeveloped special designs for use oncompressors, that is to say, for measuringpoints on machines that are constantly ex-posed to strong vibrations. We have deve-loped very special technologies for theseapplications in order to produce tempera-ture probes that are vibration resistantand reliable, and still meet our cost tar-get. After more than 15 years, this led toan independent product line for tempera-ture measurement on compressors, refri-gerating units, trucks and railwaytechnology.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: How and at whichstage do you internally check the

technical and financial feasibility of cus-tomer specifications? And what abouttime constraints?Matthias Nau: Given our experience of de-veloping 25,000 special designs, we canquickly estimate the feasibility of new variants. All this is done directly by our en-gineering department. However, unfortu-nately we do occasionally have customerswho, after a small modification at the be-ginning, keep coming back with new de-mands until it eventually becomes ap-parent that it is really going in the directionof a completely new development. Althoughthis is less than ideal, it is controllable. As far as the time factor is concerned, weare always pressured for time when de-signing variants, as customers want aquotation almost immediately after ma-king an enquiry, and they want short deli-very times, irrespective of whether wehave to implement new individual parts.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: How do you shareresponsibility for a development projectwith your customers? At what stage doyou normally reach an agreement on this?Matthias Nau: We start discussing the re-sponsibilities with the customer duringthe design stage. We specify the respon-sibilities in a joint contract before startingon the development. This also includes,for example, the coordination of qualifica-tion tests. The customers often have theirown specially adapted tests for their ap-plication, so it saves costs and time if they
perform these test steps themselves. Ul-timately we look for a win/win position forboth parties.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: Many products re-quire special approvals, for example forvehicle construction or the food industry.How far do your services go for your cus-tomers?Matthias Nau: It goes without saying that wealso take care of product approvals, alt-hough we cannot ignore the cost side. Ap-provals often involve a great deal of timeand effort for preparation, and the appro-val procedure itself is expensive. It is de-cided on a case-by-case basis whetherthe customer has to bear the total costsor if JUMO will bear part or all of the ap-proval costs. This decision is taken on thebasis of whether we can market the ap-proved product ourselves or whether itwill remain a purely customer-specific ap-proval.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: How do you com-municate and coordinate with your cus-tomers abroad?Matthias Nau: Well, of course, the experi-ences there are the same. That is why,many years ago, we founded our own ma-nufacturing plants for temperature pro-bes in China, the US and several othercountries. The sensor elements comefrom our parent company in Fulda, but thetemperature probes themselves are con-structed and assembled on site as per the
regional conventions and standards. Inthese countries, customer discussionsare the same as in the German-speakingcountries but they are conducted in therespective language of the country, takingthe local culture of negotiation into consi-deration. This makes it easier, more reliable and more effective for everyone.
Dr. Gerhard Weiler: When do you consi-der a joint development project to havebeen completed? Matthias Nau: A development project iscompleted with the production launch andstart of series production. However, in thecase of OEM products, the developmentisnt really completed until the end of pro-duction, as meetings are usually held withOEM customers at regular intervals todiscuss the current quality level, optimi-zations, product management (small modifications), and of course new productideas. Often these discussions form thebeginning of concept phases for the sub-sequent developments. This is an especiallypositive outcome of our flexibility and customer focus.

spent some time in the US managing thesubsidiary. He hopes these foreign intern-ships will inspire the young people andthat they might be able to imagine workingfor several years in a foreign subsidiary, forexample in China or the US,after comple-ting their training or course of study.

JUMO Metz was founded in1975 as the first subsidiary ofJUMO GmbH & Co. KG. The past
three and a half decades were characte-rized by continuous growth and increa-sing vertical integration in line with therequirements of the French market.Today, Michel Belliot is responsible forthe companys sales, marketing, pro-duction and customer services for theFrench market and beyond.
In 1977, the company set up its own pro-duction facilities in Metz for manufactu-ring temperature probes. Here it is able tomeet the specific requirements of theFrench customers ensuring customerproximity, high quality and fast delivery. In2000, JUMO Metz obtained certification asper ATEX Directive 94/9/CE and can the-refore produce ATEX approved tempera-ture probes.The organization of the sales and pro-duction departments of the subsidiaryhave been constantly improved over thelast few years. Numerous investmentshelped to streamline production, shortenresponse times and reduce manufactu-ring costs. For instance, the productionarea for temperature probes was increa-sed by 50%. The area of the mechanicalworkshop was also enlarged by 30%to
make room for new machines.Energy costs were reduced by 35%by theinstallation of a new heating system. Allthese efforts and investment improved pro-ductivity, cut overall costs and strengthenedthe companys competitive position. In 2010, the company produced 47000 tem-perature probes and 24000 thermostats. Inaddition, it produced 16000 controllers, re-cording devices and transmitters, speciallyconfigured for the requirements of theFrench customers. JUMO Metz employs astaff of 73 and expects to achieve turnoverof around 11.4 millioneuros in 2011. The JUMO subsidiary is certified as perISO 9001 v 2008, ATEX Directive 94/9/CE.
An application was made for a new certi-fication as per Atex i, COFRAC 17025, Marine (VERITAS Rules for the Classifica-tion of Steel Ships, Standard EN60751 and60584) for a new thermostat.JUMO Metz is well prepared for the futureand intends to remain among the most im-portant and successful subsidiaries of theJUMO group.

FunctionPressure measuring devices operate ac-cording to the principle of hydrostatic fil-ling level measurement. The hydrostaticpressure, the temperature-dependentdensity and the gravitational accelerationare used for calculating the filling level.The hydrostatic pressure in a liquid is pro-duced by the liquid column above a body(e.g. sensor). The hydrostatic pressure isproportional to the depth of immersion of
a body. To give you an impression of thepressure/level relationship: 10m of watercolumn has a pressure of 0.98bar at awater temperature of 20 C.
Versatile tendency The type of pressure measuring device isselected on the basis of the respectivemeasuring task. Level measurement pro-bes, specially developed pressure measu-ring devices for level sensing, are available
for use in unpressurized tanks or open wa-ters. Differential pressure transmitters typeJUMO MIDAS DP10 or JUMO dTRANS p20DELTA are especially suitable for use inpressurized tanks. Alternatively, if it is necessary for reasonsof hygiene, the filling level of unpressuri-zed tanks can be externally measuredusing relative pressure transmitters.
