Overview
The Saunders Springs Nature Preserve is a
small, picturesque, heavily wooded natural
area located on steep terrain with springs
that feed a lake/ reservoir and cascading
streams/waterfalls. The preserve provides
opportunities for nature study, walking hik-
ing, picnicking and historic interpretation.
The nature preserve has two parts: one is a
26 acre area owned and operated by the city
of Radcliff and overseen by the Radcliff For-
estr), and Conservation Board and a 73 acre
tract adiacent to the nature preserve named
the Saunders Springs Annex which is leased
from Fort Knox. The Annex Area offers ad-
ditional hiking and biking trails. The Vincent
Kieta Welcome Center at the Preserve pro-
vides additional information.

,HistorvA grist mil! was operational in the early1800s along the stream that runs throughthe Preserve. During the U.S. Civil Warboth Union and Confederate forces wereknown to have camped in the area.
The lower Preserye area was the site of awater processing plant" remnants which arestill on Iocation, which provided drinkingwater to Camp Knox, later becoming FortKnox, from the 1920's to the 1950's. Har-din County Water District #! then pro-cessed water for Northern Hardin Countyfrom the 1950's-1970's and later sold thearea to Radcliff. ln the mid- 1990's Radcliffstarted developing the Saunders SpringsNature Preserve.
Stroll on one of I I nomed noture trails
TrailsThere are I I named nature/hiking trails withinthe Preservex totaling approximately threemiles in length. The terrain from the upper tothe lower portion of the Preserve drops morethan 200 feet in elevation with 900 steps/stairsbeing built into some trails, making most ofthese trails unsuitable for biking. Two handi-capped accessible trails are also offered.
The Annex provides more than eight miles ofnamed trails* suitable for hiking, jogging ormountain biking and four additional mountainbiking/skills only areas.
Water Features
Two spring fed lakes are located within thePreserve. The upper lake, known as the HighLake which served as the water plant reser-voir, has been stocked with fish. Waterhlls/cascades created by springs and lake overflowsare popular backdrops for photographerswhile youngsters and the young at heart enjoyplaying in the streams.
Scout Camping Areas
The Preserve and the Annex both have ScoutCamping Areas which are used regularly byscout units. For additional information or toreserve a camp area please contact the Parks &Recreation Department at (270) 351-4079.
Picnickins Areaq/Pavilions
There are two pavilions in the Preserve. Thelargest located in the upper Preserve area con-tains eight large picnic tables and the smallerpavilion is in the lower Preserve. Pavilion res-ervations by individuals or groups require a
modest fee and may be reserved by calling Rad-
cliff Parks & Recreation at (270) 351-4079. Anumber of other picnic tables, some with BBQgrills, are located near the pavilions and areavailable on a first come, first served basis.
Los CabinsThree log cabins have been constructed at theentrance of the Preserve from their originalsetting in Radcliff. They consist of the RaineCabin-1836, the Stovall Cabin-about 1873
and the Atcher Cabin-approximately 1875.x
The cabins are a favorite of photographers,both professional and amateur.
