THANE (MAHA), May 13:

A green corridor was createdin the wee hours today to trans-port a harvested heart of a man,who was declared brain dead inPune, for an emergency hearttransplant surgery of a teenageboy at a hospital in Mulund inthe district.

The heart, that set out its

journey from Pune's Ruby Hallclinic at 1.38 AM reached theoperation theatre in FortisHospital at 3.13 AM covering adistance of around 188 kms.

The heart was brought to thehospital via Mumbai-Puneexpressway and traffic depart-ments in Pune, Navi Mumbai,Mumbai and Highway policecoordinated to ensure that itreaches the recipient as quicklyas possible.

"The transplant became possi-

ble after a 28-year-old man wasdeclared brain dead at Ruby HallClinic in Pune, following a headinjury during a road accident. Hisfamily consented to donate hisheart, kidneys and liver, to savelives of four deserving recipi-ents," an official release fromFortis Hospital said.

The heart transplant surgerywas conducted on a 14-year-oldmale recipient from Borivali,who was suffering from dilatedcardiomyopathy.(PTI)
