1RSYC MAGAZINE MARCH / APRIL 2014
AT THE HELM
Dear Fellow Members
With the construction delays almost
behind us, your Club finished the
FY2013 financial year on 31 December
2013 slightly better placed from an
operating cash-flow position than in the
previous 12 month period and certainly
better positioned to deliver improved
financial results to our members for
the coming and future financial years.
Whilst the result was adversely affected
by the construction delays, it was still a
“reasonable” result in what were rather
trying times.
As all members are aware, three
years ago the Club commenced two
major development efforts – the
new dry stack and the additional
accommodation wing at our Marina
Lodge. Both of these projects offer
our membership additional amenities
and also provide the Club a way to
generate more cash-flow to support our
operations and long jeopardy.
Our new marina facilities have been
well-received in the boating community
with current and new members taking
advantage of Singapore’s premier dry
stacking facility. Dry stack occupancy
closed the year at 73%, well up on
the start of the year. The additional
capacity remaining will provide the
Club with the ability to attract new
members, engage and encourage
current members to embrace the
boating lifestyle (by purchasing a
boat), and importantly generate further
revenue in the coming year and beyond.
As a side note, we saw a large 70%
increase in FY2013 participation in our
PPCDL (Powered Pleasure Craft Driving
Licence) courses. This presents a
great opportunity for our management
to engage with Singapore’s aspiring
boating community to showcase our
Club and its membership benefits.
The Club also saw a 5% increase in
occupancy in our wet berths during the
FY2013 year and are busy re-looking at
options to re-configure a section of the
wet berths to provide different berthing
options and increase occupancy. At the
same time, we have seen increased,
unplanned, expenditure in the marina to
address maintenance issues at the wet
berths.
The long-awaited opening of the new
wing of our Marina Lodge has been
very well-received and supported by
our members. Occupancy in January
was above expectations and with
a strong bookings profile for the
coming months early signs are very
encouraging for the realising the
expected cash-flow returns from our
$8.1 million investment.
It has been widely reported in
Singapore as to the difficulties
ahead for industries that are reliant
on foreign labour and for industries
that are competing for local talent.
RSYC’s Food & Beverage department
has been adversely affected both
from an operational and financial
perspective, and has not performed
up to our expectations. We continue
to experience problems recruiting and
retaining quality staff and at the same
time we have failed to adequately
service our members. We continue to
work on solutions to these problems
and hope to demonstrate some positive
traction with respect to the outsourcing
of the Bridge Restaurant in the coming
months.
A more detailed financial report will be
provided in our Annual Report.
The famous American financier/
philanthropist/presidential advisor,
Bernard Baruch, once wrote “we did
not all come over on the same ship,
but we are all in the same boat”. I
would encourage all members to do
what they can to play an active and
constructive role in improving your
Club by patronising, participating and
providing feedback. It’s your Club, and
its continued success depends on all
of you.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It is with regret that we have had to
close the Bridge restaurant, but the
manpower shortage caused by the
Ministry of Manpower quota system has
affected our operations severely. The
F&B staff have been working beyond
their normal capacity for the last
several months to cater to members’
needs.
As mentioned by the Commodore in his
letter to members, dated 30 January
2014, we are actively seeking a new
F&B operator to run the restaurant. This
will be carried out by our appointed
agent, Jones Lang LaSalle. In the
meantime, we have opened the Bridge
Terrace for members to entertain their
guests with a selection of snack items,
accompanied with a cup of coffee/tea,
or even a glass of beer or wine. Please
review the operating hours in the table
below for Bridge Terrace, Beacon Bar
and The Mess.
We have also revamped the Wharf
menu, with more Western dishes,
together with your favourite signature
menu items. Based on your feedback,
we are trying a new service procedure
at The Wharf. We are also trying new
food and beverage promotions to
entice members back to the Club, such
as our Teochew Porridge Buffet at the
Wharf and our regular Whisky & Wine
nights at the Mess on the last Friday of
each month.
Our Events Team has also planned
several events for members, the most
important being Commodore’s Day on
Saturday 22 March 2014. This will be an
open house concept, where members
and their families will be reacquainted
with all the services and facilities of the
Club. The team has planned a whole
host of fun activities and food stalls
to make this a day to remember. We
have also planned the Nongsa Point
Marina sailing expedition from 15 to 17
March, and the Rowing Open House
on Saturday 8 March 2014. You do not
need to know how to sail or row to
take part in these activities, so we ask
all members to sign up and be part of
these events.
I would like to congratulate Ms. Bella
Teo for winning the Employee of the
Quarter award. You may have seen
her running up and down our function
rooms and areas, coordinating banquet
events. You can find out more about
her job in our staff section.
I would also like to highlight that we
are having our Annual Staff Dinner
& Dance on Wednesday 23 April
2014. Club operating hours will be
affected because we are conducting
an emergency fire and evacuation
drill in the morning, and preparing
for the dinner event in the evening.
Please refer to the table below for
the operating hours of the various
departments on that day. We thank you
for your understanding.
Finally, on behalf of the staff, I would
like to thank members for their
generous Hong Bao contributions,
which was distributed to all the staff on
20 January 2014. The red packets were
distributed by our Commodore, and
committee members Mr. Joseph Kwok
and Mr. Tan Kay Toh. We are sincerely
appreciative of your kind gesture.

6 REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB
RSYC & The EnvironmentThe Republic of Singapore Yacht Club has come a long way from its beginnings from Trafalgar Street to its current location here at West Coast; and stepping into newer times, RSYC now aims to take a firmer stand in playing its role towards preserving the environment, one step at a time.
On several occasions in the past, RSYC has played its part in preserving the environment through efforts such as coastal clean-ups, which was jointly organized with the Nature Society of Singapore. More recently, the Club installed energy conserving motion-sensor lights in the washrooms on Level 2 of the main building.
Existing PracticesBehind the scenes, the Club has taken various steps to reduce its carbon footprints. Amongst which are:
Recycling & ReducingNewspapers & Magazines• Oldnewspapersandmagazines from around the clubhouse and accommodation rooms are collected, sorted and sent for recycling. The Club has engaged a waste disposal company that specializes in recycling.• Withtheadventofsmartdevices, freely available internet connectivity (Wifi) and upward trend of digital media consumption, the Housekeeping & Accommodations Department has stopped sending newspapers to the guest rooms from 1 January 2014. With the reduced orders of newspaper from 20 copies to 6 copies a day, the Club has not only managed to save several hundred dollars per month, but also reduced plastic and paper waste. Room guests who still wish to read the traditional printed newspapers, can request for their copies and collect them at the Front Office.
Reducing the changing of Bed Linens• Insteadofhavingitchangedon alternate days, bed linens for long- staying room guests are now changed twice a week, unless
soiled. This has a direct reduction in laundry-related costs; thus indirectly saves water and reduces chemical wastes from being released into the environment.
Re-using of Bath Towelsfor Room Guests• Roomguestsareencouragedto re-use their bath towels by hanging it up on the towel hangers provided. If a room guest wishes to have their bath towels changed, they can simply leave it on the bathroom floor and the chambermaids will have them replaced with fresh towels. This also has a direct reduction in laundry-related costs; thus indirectly saves water and reduces chemical wastes from being released into the environment.
Placement of Waste Sorting Binsat the Club• Topromoterecyclingamongst members, Waste Sorting Bins (see photo below) have been placed around the Club. Members are encouraged to play their part by sorting their waste accordingly before disposal. This will greatly help in the recycling process at the recycling plant.
Reducing Energy & Paper Usage• Staffmembersareconstantly reminding one another to switch off the air-conditioning and lights when it is not in use. This will help in reducing the total cost for electricity, thus indirectly reducing the Club’s carbon footprint.• Staffmembersarealsoencourage
to switch off all electrical appliances and devices when they are not in use.• Printingofunnecessarydocuments is also kept to a minimum. Instead, staff members are encouraged to digitally backup and archive files that are electronically produced. This has helped reduce our dependence on using printing paper.
Going Forward & Going GreenAs we move into the future, RSYC will work on creating a framework towards achieving a cleaner and sustainable environment for the benefit of all members and general public. We would like to encourage members to extend a helping hand and play an active role in preserving the environment. Below are some simple tips to get you started:
Reduce• Reduceyourusageofplasticsand items that contain harmful chemicals. Whenever possible, try to find alternatives which are environmentally friendly.
Reuse• Reuseitemssuchasbottlesand bags. Whenever possible, get items that can be re-used, such as re-usable shopping bags to replace commonly-used plastic bags or use longer-lasting plastic water bottles which you can refill and use for a longer duration.• Getcreativeandreuseyour everyday items. Everyday items can be repurposed for other uses than what it was originally intended for.
Recycle• Sortyourwasteintocategories– Plastics, Paper, Glass and Others. This will go along way in the recycling process at the recycling plant.• UsetheWasteSortingBins available at the Club.• Ifyourwasteishazardous (contains poisonous chemicals or toxic materials), please check with the National Environment Agency at 1800-2255632 or email them at contact_nea@nea.gov.sg on how best to dispose it.
Lookout for more tips on Going Green For Boaters in the next issue of the magazine. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to drop us a note at info@rsyc.org.sg if you have any suggestions or recommendations that will help us save and preserve the environment.

8 REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB
Fleet Celebrates the Finish of the20th Annual Singapore Straits Regatta
Overall winner for IRC Open Class – Blue Note.
SPECIAL FEATURE
Poolside Party Celebrates the Close of the Regatta
Saturday 18 January 2014 saw the close of the nearly week
long 20th Singapore Straits Regatta. There was excitement in
the air when guests and participants started to arrive at the
ONE°15 Marina Club’s poolside for a sumptuous buffet dinner
and the handing out of awards.
“This year’s regatta was one of the best,” according to Gordon
Maxted who should know as he has participated in all the
Singapore Strait’s Regattas since they began back in 1995.
Drama on the High Seas
Highlights of this year’s regatta included lots of action and
drama. On the Batam side where races were held off the Nongsa
Point Marina for three days, saw heavy seas and high winds.
Participants were battered and sometimes
surprised at how rough conditions could
get. As Victoria Koh, skipper of Jangan
Main-Main explained, “I’ve never sailed in
such choppy water. At times, it was really
intense.” She also revealed that, “This was
my first ever regatta and I loved it.” When
asked if she will join next year’s Singapore
Straits Regatta, she beamed, “Most
definitely!”
Saturday’s final races saw the fleet
participating in events just off Singapore’s
eastern coast. While conditions weren’t as rough as those
off Nongsa Point, there was still plenty of sailing excitement.
At times, winds reached nearly 20 knots and there was a 1.5
meter swell pushed along by the Northeasterly Monsoon. Still,
it was a much “calmer” race and participants were able to put
all their sailing skills to work. “We had a great time off the east
coast,” acknowledged skipper Victoria Koh.
One Fast Boat
The IRC Open Class yacht, Blue Note took top honours at
this year’s regatta. The boat’s Skipper and owner, David
Dimmock, said about the sailing conditions, “Batam was hard
going and very challenging. It was like a washing machine out
there with some very confused seas. But once we got used
to the conditions we were in our element.” Dimmock and his
teammates were also very proud to have
received this year’s Cup. “There are a lot of
great names on that Cup. Names like Ray
Roberts. We feel privileged to be among
the truly greats of competitive sailing.”
Judgment Day
Mr. Selvam, one of the three international
judges who was on hand to help settle
any protests that might come up had
this to say about the race, “Participants
of this year’s regatta may have had a
great time but it was the truly marvelous
“It was like a washing machine
out therewith some veryconfused seas.”
Blue Note’s skipperDavid Dimmock
9RSYC MAGAZINE MARCH / APRIL 2014
support provided by the racing committee,
sponsors and organisers that allowed this
race to go on without a hitch.” As for any
protests, the long time sailor and judge
disclosed, “There was only one protest. I
expected that this regatta would not see
any conflicts because all the participants
were here to have fun and enjoy the sport
of sailing. They are all true sportspeople.”
Arthur Tay, Chairman of ONE°15 Marina Club, who presented
this year’s awards, said about the past four days of sailing, “The
Singapore Straits Regatta is all about endurance, teamwork,
fair play, having fun and above all, safety.” Chairman Tay struck
a positive note when he pledged his unwavering support for
the sport of sailing in Singapore by declaring, “ONE°15 Marina
Club shares a similar vision with everyone here in growing the
regatta to include a wider participation locally and regionally
as well as increasing the number of boat entries, participants
and spectators. We are committed to revitalizing the regatta
together with Singapore Sailing Federation and fellow
stakeholders of the SSR.”
Enjoyable Torture
One of the hardest workers at this year’s race must have
been Principal Race Officer Huzaini Ibrahim and his team
from ONE°15 Marina. They worked tirelessly to make this
year’s regatta the success that it was. Huzaini, who also
headed up the Race Secretariat, had this
to say about the regatta, “Everyone had
a good time.” And with a laugh, about the
conditions in Nongsa Point, he said, “I
think it was enjoyable torture. Participants
learned first hand that you can never
underestimate Mother Nature.” Huzaini,
a champion sailor himself sees a bright
future for sailing in Singapore. “We’re
attracting a lot of youth to the sport. This was demonstrated
by the number of university students who participated in this
year’s regatta. It’s only going to grow and get bigger.” Huzaini
also acknowledged this year’s event “demonstrated a high
degree of sportsmanship. “It was truly great.” he said.
Looking to the Future
ONE°15 Marina General Manager, Brian Werner said at the
close of the awards party, “I know that everyone who took part
had a great time and is looking forward to the 21st Singapore

About Singapore Straits Regatta
The idea of a yachting regatta of international standing in Singapore waters was mooted in 1994 by a handful of local enthusiasts
to entrench Singapore’s position as a yachting hub in Asia and catalyse the growth of the local keelboat sailing scene. The
annual fixture in the Asian Yachting circuit has since come to be famed for its blend of Singaporean and Indonesian flavour,
being the only regatta that brings the yachts and sailors to clubs on both sides of the Straits. A truly unique regatta that presents
a myriad of sailing conditions and experiences. The Straits Regatta has been constantly evolved over the past 19 years and the
upcoming 20th edition will present itself in a format closer to the roots of the original editions in the early 1990s. A time-tested
formula that has attracted sailors and yachts from all over the world!
In 1995, the inaugural Singapore Straits Regatta was held. A brainchild of pioneers of sailing in Singapore, this event saw Raffles
Marina, Nongsa Point Marina, and Changi Sailing Club coming together with the Singapore Sailing Federation to organise this
landmark event.
The Regatta is organised through a unique organising chair rotation system amongst the Singapore clubs and Nongsa Point
Marina. The coming together of all stakeholders in Singapore sailing clubs through a Memorandum of Understanding signals
the strong camaraderie and collective drive to promote the sport.
About the Perpetual Cup Series
Inaugurated in 1997, the Perpetual Cup Series crowns the top performing yacht in the elite racing class across three key sailing
events in Southeast Asia, namely The Raja Muda International Regatta, Phuket King’s Cup and Singapore Straits Regatta,
and awards the winning team with the prestigious Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy from the treasure trove of historical trophies from
the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. Over the years, the Series has been awarded to several elite sailors, earning itself a
prestigious reputation throughout the sailing community.

No Wake Speed ZonesRecently, there have been numerous
complaints by various members of boats
speeding within the marina. The wake of the
vessels traveling well above the “No Wake
Speed” limit has resulted in damages to
vessels due to the violent rocking, and in
some instances there have been reports of
crew members falling over the vessels into
the water.
As such, the Club sincerely hopes that
boaters departing and returning to the
marina can adhere to the “No Wake Speed” limit to prevent any serious injury from
occurring or potential damage to the vessels
of other members. If a vessel is found to be
in violation of the “No Wake Speed” limit, the
Club will consider taking disciplinary action
against the boater, in accordance with our
By-Laws & Constitution.
We wish to maintain the safety standards of
the Club premise and thus would like to seek
the cooperation of all boaters and members
so that boats berthed at the Marina can have
the assurance that they will not be damaged
by the acts of other members.
If you have any queries regarding the “No
Wake Speed” limit, please do not hesitate
to contact the Marine Dept at 67689234 or
email to marina@rsyc.org.sg
