LETTER FROM THE COMMITTEE

The Basketball Challenge started 28 years ago thanks to the efforts of Rick Jalbert, Jose Gonsalves and the guys in the Senior Basketball League who wanted to support the Boys & Girls Club where their games were held. It started as the Senior Challenge with the “old guys” playing the “young guys” in a game of hoops with a raffle and some donations. The event raised $1,800 the first year.

Since then the Basketball Challenge has grown to be one of the signature fundraising events for the Club. In keeping with the mission of the Boys & Girls Club the stars of the games are the very talented youth of our community. In addition to raising around $600,000 over the history of this event to support programming at the Club, it is the only opportunity for the male and female high school basketball stars to play together on one court. It is always fun to see the teams hit the floor and work together to create a new teamwork- all to help the younger youth attending the Club.

We have solicited many sponsors over the years and are very pleased to have BayCoast Bank become our event’s sponsor. Please take a moment to read the signs in the gym which acknowledge all our leading sponsors.

The raffle has been run very successfully with prizes donated by generous local businesses and individuals. We have many wonderful prizes and hope you purchase a chance to win before the winning tickets are drawn this evening. Please take a moment to look through the program book and utilize the services of the many businesses listed.

We would also like to thank the many folks who give of their time for this event, the referees, raffle ticket sellers, the Bay State Basketball League members, Women’s League players, Over 35 League players, Over 45 League players, High School All-Star

players, media outlets and many of our Board members who help make this event a success.

We also thank Executive Director Robbie Mendes and his staff members, who do a wonderful job here at the Club everyday making a difference in the lives of thousands of youth. They too have gone the extra mile to help with the Challenge.

Elijah was a true joy to have as a member at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. He was a very generous and kind young man. He was taken from us far too soon, but has taught us all how precious life is and that we must all live our lives to the fullest. Elijah touched so many lives in his short time with us and he will always be remembered for his smile and his infectious laugh that made him a joy to be around.
