WORDS FROM EDITOR
Assalamualaikum & Greetings to all the Readers
We meet again ! I hope everyone is in a good health. Time flies so fast as we have entering
the first quarter of 2018. CRC HKL e-newsletter starts our issue for this year by a sharing
session from Dr. Noor Ashani Md Yusoff, who has been nominated as Top 2 Recruiter in
Malaysia by PAREXEL in the study 223138 ; NOPRODPCR4001 - Prostate Cancer registry
study in Asia. Hit the target of 40% more patients recruited than other sites is not an easy
job. Let’s hear some words of encouragement from him which I think it could instill the
spirit to all of us to work towards clinical research in future.
Besides, we also would like to share about our annual event, the HKL Research Day 2017
which was held in last August 2017. It was a success to see the event went smooth with all
the positive feedback from the participants. Definitely, it would not be accomplished
without a strong support from all the HKL staffs.
In publication section, we also would like to take this platform to share with all of you the
list of research title that have been successfully published in various types of journal
nationally and internationally. Congratulation to all the hard work that every of you put in
making the publication a success although the process may not be straight forward. Let’s
strive for more publication for 2018.
Last but not least, I hope that you will enjoy reading this issue. All the readers out there
including our CRC HKL staffs are encouraged to contribute any research-related article in
our upcoming issue. I believe CRC HKL e-newsletter can continue to be a platform in
promoting research especially within our CRC and HKL family. See you again in our next
issue and happy reading. Take care.

STORY BEHIND A GOOD ACCOMPLISHMENT
Page 3
Dr. Noor Ashani Md Yusoff is a Consultant Urologist in Department of Urology,
Hospital Kuala Lumpur since December 2009. Prior to this ,he also held the position Head of
Urology department in Hospital Pulau Pinang from 2003 until 2009. He graduated his Medical
degree (MBBS) from University of Malaya in 1994 and his Master of Surgery (General) from
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2002. Mr Ashani completed his fellowship in Malaysian Urological
Association in 2007 and subsequently received Malaysian Board of Urology Certificate (MBU cert) in 2008. His
journey didn’t stop there. In 2010, Mr Ashani gained his fellowship in Robotic Surgery (University of Yonsei, Korea)
and Fellowship Royal College of Surgeon (FRCS) (Urology) in 2014. With the working experience more than 15
years in his specialty, he took the great opportunity to involve in many medical research. Recently, CRC HKL has been informed by PAREXEL (one of the top pharmaceutical company which
sponsors a number of Industrial Sponsored Research in Malaysia) about the outstanding performance by Mr Ashani
in his study entitled “Prostate Cancer registry study in Asia”. We are gladly to share with all the readers that he has
been announced as Top 2 Recruiter in Malaysia through his study by hitting the target of 40% more patients
recruited than other sites. A big congratulations to you, Mr Ashani.
Therefore, CRC HKL took this opportunity to feature him in our e-newsletter. Lets hear the keys of
success and accomplishment from him.
Issue 4
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work !
How did you get started in your
research journey?
“As a medical doctor, doing research is
part of our duty. However, doing
research in the busy working schedule in
MOH especially HKL is not that easy.
Actually, this is my first official industrial
initiated research conducted in Hospital
Kuala Lumpur. The opportunity was
given to me by my HOD Dr. Murali
Sundram because I’m doing Robotic Radi-
cal prostatectomy for patient with pros-
tate cancer.”
Can you share your strategy in
being the top 2 recruiters in
Malaysia for this particular trial?
“The key factor to make a successful
research is a good and dedicated
team because I will not be able to be
at clinic all the time. To motivate my
entire team, all the financial benefit
will go directly to the recruiter (sub-
investigators or SI) not to me as the
principle investigator (PI).”
Any advice for upcoming and
budding researchers? “Be prepared to get involve in research.
Get your Good Clinical Practice
certificate as soon as possible. That is
the requirement.”
What is your motivation in doing
clinical research? “To build up the name of Hospital Kuala
Lumpur in research.”
How do you find time to juggle
between your busy clinical
schedule and research? “Good and dedicated team member
and also the help from CRC and
CRM.”
What are some of the changes
that you would like to see in
the research culture in HKL? “More conducive environment for
Principle Investigator (PI) like
research assistants.”
What are some of your interests
outside of work? “Reading book (leadership, motivational
and financial) and watching movies”
“The main challenger is to assemble a good team. With good and dedicated team, the process will be much easier” .
In your opinion, what is the main
challenge in recruiting patients? “The main challenger is to assemble a good
team. With good and dedicated team, the
process will be much easier especially this is
just a prospective observational study. It is
not difficult to convince the patient to be
recruited.”
Have you ever been in a study where
you failed to recruit patients? What
did you learn from that experience?
“This is my first industrial initiated study.”
TRAINING & WORKSHOP
Page 4 Issue 4
Hospital Kuala Lumpur Research Day 2017 marked the second endeavor by Clinical research Centre Hospital Kuala
Lumpur, CRC HKL. It was held on 10th of August 2017 at Main Auditorium Hospital Kuala Lumpur and officiated by the previous
HKL Director, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Zaininah Mohd Zain. The HKL Research Day had a very good attendance response, total
estimation around 350 delegates which came from our hospital staffs, National CRC and other hospitals CRC colleagues as well
as volunteers support from universities such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). We
were lucky to have Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM) and Honestbee to be our sponsor for the event.
Maintain the same theme as 1st HKL Research Day entitled
“Research Today for the Best Healthcare of Tomorrow”, today HKL is
the National Premier Hospital whereby multidisciplinary specialties are
situated to offer the best services in the country. HKL has transformed
from a purely clinical-base hospital to renowned training postgraduate
training center and also as one of the main important research hubs in
Malaysia such as Pediatric Institute, Institute Perubatan Respiratori
(IPR) and Institut Kajisaraf Tunku Abdul rahman (IKTAR), whereby
research is part of the job scope for the dedicated clinicians here.
Thus, there is a great number of research findings resulting in the
improvement of the clinical outcomes of our patients.
The plenary session entitled “Grooming Young Investigators” delivered by
Dr Mahadevan Deva Tata who is currently serves as General & Upper GI surgeon,
and Head of Clinical Research Centre at Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar, Seremban. He initiated ‘Project Joey Initiative’ in his hospital which aims to nurture young and
budding researchers to develop their skills in conducting research. The misconception prevails that research
is hard, with no tangible rewards, and in recognition of the need to hone a new
generation of researchers in HKL, he shared his thoughts and experiences in how
best to nurture new blood into the research field.

The research day event continued with a forum session
entitled “Nurturing Research in HKL - Are We Equipped and
Prepared” participated by experienced panels who tried to unravel
the potential of HKL, and what challenges might lie ahead in our
pursuit towards the seamless integration of research in the current
clinical practice. For this, we invited Dr. Akhmal Yusof (CEO of Clinical Research Malaysia, CRM), Prof Datuk Dr Adeeba
Kamarulzaman (Dean of Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya) and
Dr Ng Poh Yin (Consultant of O&G, HKL) to lead the hot one-hour
forum session.
T h e r e
were fifty posters
and five oral presentations were contested. All the presentations were judged
fairly by 6 experienced and dedicated judges. They split into 3 for Oral and 3
for Poster presentation. Dr Mahadevan Deva Tata, Prof Dr Syed Zulkifli Syed
Zakaria (Consultant of Neonatology, HUKM & Clinical Epidemiologist HUKM)
and Dr Ngu Lock Hock (Consultant In Clinical Genetics and Inherited
Metabolic Diseases, HKL) led the Oral presentation session. While Dr Nurain
Mohd Noor (Head of CRC Putrajaya), Dr Chern Phei Ming (Head of CRC
Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras) and Dr Jamaiyah Haniff (Head of Malaysian
Health Performance Unit, MHPU) be the judge for the posters. We would
like to congratulate to all the winners with their great and fruitful
presentation.
Last but not least, CRC HKL would like to thank everyone who has tirelessly contributed towards making this event a
success. We hope that we continue to show our commitment in ensuring a flourishing research culture in HKL and pave a
distinctive path for our future generation. See you in the HKL Research Day 2018.
