Background

• The Icelandic power system is heavily loaded. – Idea: Active load modulation of industrial loads

(Aluminum smelters) in the systems using PMU measurements for enhancing small signal stability.

• Developed two active load control algorithms. • Tested

– Using the two area Kundur power system model (0.64Hz).

– In Real-Time Software-in-the-Loop (RT-SIL).

Conclusions/Recommendations• Both algorithms provide adequate damping

for inter-area oscillations.• The algorithm is flexible to accommodate

multiple oscillatory modes. • Future work

– Test algorithm in Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop.• Deploy load control algorithm in an external controller,

NI-cRIO (Compact Reconfigurable I/O Controller).• Utilize wide-area synchrophasor measurements to

perform load control.
