NEWSLETTER NO 11 OF 2019
Dear Parents and learners,
We are now almost a month into the third term and things are very busy as usual. The Grade 12
students have finished off their teaching cycle and next week, the final exams will kick off for them. I
would like to take this opportunity to wish them well for the exams! I hope that they are all studying
very hard and making sure that they are well prepared. We had a lovely Grade 12 Valediction service
on Friday as well as the final ringing of the bell ceremony for the leaving Grade 12’s. Special thanks to
the Grade 12 parents who took the time to join us for the celebration of the achievements of the class
of 2019!

POSITIVE LIVING TALK
During the course of last week, Margaret and Tanya from “Reach for life – No regrets” presented a
series of seminars and workshops to our learners from Grades 8 to 11. After the presentation, I spoke
to a number of learners who confirmed that they found the discussion hugely beneficial. The ladies
spoke to our learners about making positive choices in their lives, including discussions around the
negative things, like drugs, that can affect us and lead us in the wrong direction.
At the end of the presentation in each Grade, I thanked the Ladies for their valuable contribution and
expressed my appreciation that this organization has a long term relationship with the learners at Rand
College.

NEED 2 READ
The school was Blessed to have a visit from the organisers of Need 2 Read. Sheldon is a 14 year old
learner who recognized the importance of reading and set up an organization called Need 2 Read.
They arrange for donations of reading books to school libraries as well as set up reading corners in
school classrooms. Rand Preparatory and College was the 7th school that Need 2 Read have visited
and we are hugely appreciative of the kind donation made to boost our library.
It is heart-warming to see our young learners taking the initiative to assist with literacy levels across
South Africa. A special thanks must be extended to Mrs Byrne as well as to her daughter, Taylor Byrne
for all the work that went into getting Rand onto the recipient list.
SACEE WRITING COMPETITION
In my last newsletter, I shared the news that three of our learners received awards for their short story
writing skills.
The Awards ceremony took place and Mrs Byrne accompanied the learners to the awards evening.
These are two of the photographs from the awards evening. Once again, congratulations to Mrs Byrne
and the learners who did so exceptionally well.
