Radio Loud AGN in 2XMMiMulti-wavelength view

A. Labiano (ESAC-ESA), M. Guainazzi (ESAC-ESA),S. Bianchi (Rome-3), G. Miniutti (CAB-INTA)

CAIXA

• Catalogue of AGN in the XMM-Newton Archive

• Veron and XMM 2006/2007 catalogues • Focused on QUIET, un-obscured, targeted AGN

observations - 156 sources• 77 QSO, 79 Sy. z = 0.002 – 4.520. Most with

z<0.1

• Hard, soft X-ray, H, 5GHz, BH mass

Bianchi et al. 2009a,b Talk by Ponti

CAIXA - Loud• Goal: Compare properties (and nature) of radio-loud

versus radio-quiet AGN

• X-corr: 2XMM-DR3, Veron (13th), 2010 catalogues.• Matched ~5000 sources!

• Veron gives 1.4, 5 GHz, B and V magnitudes.• X-rays: 0.2-10 kev• Radio data in Veron for ~400 out of the 5000• Included PKS, TXS, FIRST, NVSS, VLSS, GB6, PMN, WENSS,

SUMSS, GB6 – added 100 sources

Radio Loud and Quiet definition

• Log R = log f5GHz – log fB

• Log RX = log f5GHz – log f2-10KeV

• Loud: R > 2.4, Rx> -2.755

Panessa et al. 2007

LOUD

QUIET

Optical and radio have same origin (AGN)Host contribution to optical small

Radio loud tend to be x-ray brighter than quiet

Optically bright, loud sources are x-ray brighter than optical bright, quiet sources

X-rays have higher contribution from??

Brightest in radio => brightest in X-ray –> x-ray from jets? Other mechanisms?

Why are we missing faint, loud AGN? Obscured? Sample? Sensitivity?

LOUD

QUIET

S=0

H=S

H=0

HR decreases with optical luminosity -> Obscuring material covers optical and x-rays source

Nuclear (BLR, torus) or host-size obscuration?

Two vs. One Powerlaw fits

2 powerlaws 1 powerlaw

No evidence of soft excess

CAIXA: soft excess in 79% of sources

Less than 5% with non-zero flux, with uncertainties ~130%

FeK line example

CAIXA: Fe lines in 50% of sources

Spectral Index

Quiet -> 1.73 (CAIXA)

Type1 -> ~2 (Scott et al. 2011)

Summary

• 500 loud AGN with radio, optical and x-rays data.• Where are the faint, loud AGN? Obscured? Sample?

Sensitivity?

• Small “contamination” from host.• No evidence of soft excess.• Radio loud are brighter in x-rays than radio quiet.

• So far, all results point to an extra X-ray component in radio-loud AGN
