• What was the most awesome part about the Strawberry DNA extraction?
• What questions did the lab spark in your brain?
The Cell Cycle &
Cell Division

MITOSIS
Mitosis
The process of cell division which results in the production of two daughter cells
from a single parent cell.
The daughter cells are identical to one another and to the original parent
cell.
Mitosis can be divided into stages
1. Interphase
2. Prophase
3. Metaphase
4. Anaphase
5. Telophase & Cytokinesis
InterphaseThe cell prepares for division
• Animal Cell – DNA replicated– Organelles replicated– Cell increases in size
• Plant Cell– DNA replicated– Organelles replicated– Cell increases in size
Interphase

ProphaseThe cell prepares for nuclear division
• Animal Cell– Packages DNA into
chromosomes
• Plant cell– Packages DNA into
chromosomes
Prophase

MetaphaseThe cell prepares chromosomes for
division• Animal Cell
– Chromosomes line up at the center of the cell
– Spindle fibers attach from daughter cells to chromosomes at the centromere
• Plant Cell– Chromosomes line up
at the center of the cell– Spindle fibers attach
from daughter cells to chromosomes at the centromere
Metaphase

AnaphaseThe chromosomes divide
• Animal Cell– Spindle fibers pull
chromosomes apart– ½ of each
chromosome (called chromotid) moves to each daughter cell
• Plant Cell– Spindle fibers pull
chromosomes apart– ½ of each
chromosome (called chromotid) moves to each daughter cell
Anaphase

TelophaseThe cytoplasm divides
• Animal Cell– DNA spreads out– 2 nuclei form– Cell membrane
pinches in to form the 2 new daughter cells
• Plant Cell– DNA spreads out– 2 nuclei form– New cell wall forms
between to nuclei to form the 2 new daughter cells

• Respond to the questions on your work sheet
• This will be turned in at the end of the day for 10 points!
PTT 11DEC2014
1. What is the difference between plant and animal cell division?
2. Which “phase” does the cell spend most of its time?
Learning Goals
• I can model the 5 steps of mitosis in 2 ways
• I can explain why cells divide

String Model of Mitosis
• We are going to use string and paper to model Cell division!
Interphase
• Chillaxin’ doing cell things
• Copies DNA, organelles, and gets bigger
Prophase
• DNA condenses in to Chromosomes
Metaphase
• Chromosomes line up
• Spindles attach
Anaphase
• Spindles pull the chromosomes apart
Telophase/Cytokenesis
• The cytoplasm divides
Two Daughter Cells
• These are exact copies of each other
• Start with the parent cell and end with two daughter cells that have the exact same DNA
Learning Goals
• I can model the 5 steps of mitosis in 2 ways
• I can explain why cells divide
