ar·son (är ′ sǝn): The crime o maliciously, voluntarily, and willully attempting to or setting fre to a building, buildings, or other property o another or one's own property, with or without to intent to deraud.1
Arson is a crime. There are many costs directly and indirectly associated with i t; the most valuable being human lives. The most common motivesor arson include vandalism, excitement, revenge, crime-concealment, proft,
and extremism.
The FBI reported that a total o 43,412 arsons reported in 20102.
• Structural arson was the most requently reported arson category in 2010, accounting or almost hal (45.5%) o all arsons.
• These incidents resulted in monetary loss o $197 million with 385 persons injured and 157 killed.
• The average dollar loss due to arson was $17,512.
• Industrial/manuacturing structures resulted in an averageloss o $133,717 per arson.
• Arson had a higher percentage o juvenile involvement than
any other oense tracked in the FBI's National Crime Index.
