OPERA

Ø Opera is simply the art of conveying a story through singing, acting and

dancing, without any significant spoken dialog;

Ø Operas teach us about life and death, love and hate, good and bad; in short, the

human condition;

Ø It started in Italy at the end of the 16th century. Opera has existed for more

than four hundred years;

Ø Most operas are written in French, German and Italian languages;

Ø The first example of a true opera ,,DAFNE‘‘ was written in 1597 by Jacopo

Peri.

Types of OperaComic Opera - also known as light opera. An example of this

opera is La serva padrona (The Maid as Mistress) by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

Serious Opera - often the story revolves around heroes and myths, emphasis is also given to the solo voice. An example of this opera is Rinaldo by George Frideric Handel.

Opera Semiseria - this type of opera has a serious story but has a happy ending. An example of this is La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) by Gioachino Rossini.

Opera Cornique - is a type of French opera where the lines are spoken. An example is Carmen by Georges Bizet.

Grand Opera - it's an opera of a larger scale; it also includes ballet. An example of this type is Robert le Diable by Giacomo Meyerbeer.

Opera Verismo - it‘s a type of opera that emerged during the later part of the 19th century. Characters were often based on everyday people you may meet in real life and the plot is often melodramatic. An example is Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

Ø One great composer who wrote operas was Claudio Monteverdi, specifically his La favola d'Orfeo (The Fable of Orpheus) which premiered in 1607 and thus known as the first grand opera.

v Jazz is a type of African-American music that originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in the Southern United States;

v Jazz music is an art of improvisation. It is a combination of improvisation, swing notes, back beats, and blues with brass instruments;

v Jazz music has about five styles, developed from the collision of American and African cultures. They include the work song, New Orleans, the Chicago style, bebop and fusion. More sounds and styles have been developed over the years to meet the changing times as well as the diverse people's taste of music.

Among the most popular and earliest forms was New Orleans Dixieland jazz. This genre, in the city credited with birthing the jazz tradition, is the source of many standards, such as “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
