The diagram in Figure 1 shows a single phase full wave bridge rectifier constructed using MATLAB

Simulink. It consists of four thyristors connected back to back with a pair (T1 and T3, T2 and T4)

conducting during each half cycle. Two stray inductances Ls1 and Ls2 are connected in series with the supply

Vs (source side) and another inductance Ld in the load side. When α is varied between 0 to 900 the converter

operates in the rectifier mode and transfers power to the load. However, if α is greater than 900 but less than

1800 the converter operates in the inverter mode and transfer power back to the source. The input and output

waveforms are shown in Figures 2 and 3.

The circuit of Figure 4 shows a three phase converter constructed using MATLAB Simulink. It consists of six thyristors with a pair conducting for 1200 of a complete cycle. Each thyristor is triggered separately but in sequence. The input and output waveforms are shown in Figures 5 and 6.

Conclusion

Single and three phase power converters have been studied using MATLAB Simulink. The performance of

the two converters was observed by changing the firing angle of the thyristor. The aim of the exercise has

been achieved by the simulation experience acquired. Also, the exercise has inspired us to develop more

interest in power converters.
