Physical and social context
Physical and social context the Vertical Grouping of schools Cego do Maio(AVECM) covers a multifaceted area of Pvoa de Varzim. It is composed of different urban fabrics, rural and semi-urban areas, intersecting a complex of social, economic, work and family, with inevitablerepercussions in the school context. The area surrounding the schools that constitute the AVECM design is simple,
clean and relatively orderly. It contributes in the urban planning of the area,on the one hand "decorating the public spaces and building new socialhousing buildings, on the other hand closing the "problematic" in themselves,in a movement so disadvantaged families/common need. The AVECM covers several social housing neighbourhoods where lives acomplex set of socially disadvantaged families, precariously placed on theproductive fabric (or all excluded) and gipsy families. The area next to the sea, more urban characteristics, is a traditional fishingarea. On the other hand, the farmlands dominate the landscape

A few topics about the history of Pvoa de Varzim
The history of Pvoa de Varzim precedes the foundation of Portugal and it is the
result of many influences of Southern and Northern Europe, from the Mediterraneanto the Baltic Sea. The city was established as a roman villa named Villa Euracini
whose economy was based on fish canning industry.
In the middle ages the name Villa Euracini had already evolved into Veracin and had
become na important fishing port, and its control was played by nobles
headquartered in the village named Veracin of Cavaleyros (Varzim knights). Thus D.
Dinis (king of Portugal) passed a foral and ordered the creation of a Pvoa in 1308.Later on, after the feudal and royal control imposes on the metropolis the domain of
the church, through the Santa Clara Monastery, unlike other counties of the kingdom
had their development hampered, leading to a new foral in 1514 by king of D. manuel
I and only then the community has had sufficient autonomy to be able to prosper and
dominate culturally and demographically the surrounding region. The 18th century is
seen as the golden age for the urban development of Pvoa de Varzim. It is in this
century that the fishing community thrives and begins the tradition of sea bathing,
leading the town-city to take the cosmopolitan trait in the 19th century, during the
Belle Epoque.
