TRANSCRIPT

an interior is the natural projection of the soul

- coco chanel

I grew up observing how distinct styles and vernaculars emerged from their re-spective climates and culture. I became fascinated by environments, as well as their influence on people. Entering col-lege, I majored in interior design. After learning about Sick Building Syndrome and the hazards of vinyl, I began to question modern building practices and their effects. Curious and idealistic, I ventured off-the-grid to explore holis-

tic design approaches such as “natural building” and permaculture (or “Perma-nent Agriculture”), which modeles de-sign after ecosystems. While studying in Central America, I realized how basic design is to all of life: intimately linked to all aspects of the human experience from food production to housing.

Re-impassioned, I returned to school, to earn a BFA in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art Univer-sity in San Francisco. While in school, I ferventy explored various aspects of de-sign in order to gain experience. This in-

cluded volunteering with Architecture for Humanity and the International In-terior Design Association; working at an architecture firm, and for an interior de-signer, as well as in a floral design shop; and interning for former decorative painter and DIY Network host Shannon Kaye (pictured left). I talked to profes-sionals and studied my heros, including John Lautner. These experiences influ-enced my design work, which tends to embrace nature, organic shapes, mod-ernism, and minimalism. In the future, I hope to design more cultural and com-mercial spaces.
